"A retreat fringed by swaying tussock grass on the edge of Lake Te Anau, Fiordland Lodge is the luxury choice for travelers visiting Fiordland National Park on the South Island. The lodge was designed to magnify the inspiring local environment; that means 36-foot tree trunks for beams in the main lodge, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace laid with river stones, and glass walls that frame Lake Te Anau and the oft snow-capped peaks of Mount Murchison and Kepler Track. The palette is neutral and understated, always putting the emphasis on the exceptional natural beauty of the area. Themain lodge and two private cabins feel like a world unto themselves—a beautiful, comfortable, and relaxing world that is at the gateway to the Milford and Doubtful sounds and all the other Fiordland National Park wonders."

We stayed at Fiordland Lodge in November 2025, and it was easily the highlight of our trip.||The property is absolutely beautiful, but what really stood out was how personal and genuine the entire experience felt. With only a handful of guests, it truly felt like a boutique stay where every detail was thoughtful and every interaction felt sincere.||Managers James and Gethin, along with the rest of the staff, were warm, welcoming, and incredibly attentive. They made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived and were always ready with helpful tips on what to see and do around Te Anau and along the drive up to Milford Sound.||Our room was spacious, spotless, and cozy, with a cabin-like feel and a breathtaking view of Fiordland. The bathroom had heated floors, which was such a nice touch after a cool day out.||At night, being in Dark Sky country, we could see the stars and even the Milky Way right from our balcony—it was absolutely unforgettable.||The lodge has two hot tubs and sauna which guests can privately use. We enjoyed both after we arrived, and it was the perfect way to unwind while taking in the incredible scenery.||Breakfast was included and featured plenty of hearty, delicious options. The lodge also offers packed lunches for guests heading out on day trips, which was such a thoughtful detail. We ordered some for our Milford Sound adventure, and they were ready for us at breakfast, neatly packed in insulated lunch boxes.||Canapés and dinner were also included and were absolutely fantastic. The menu changes daily, and every dish we tried was flavorful and beautifully prepared.||Everything about Fiordland Lodge felt calm, personal, and perfectly designed.||We didn’t have a care in the world while we were there. It’s a beautiful, welcoming place that we’d return to in a heartbeat—truly the best place we’ve ever stayed.

Our dinners at the Lodge were hands-down the best food we had in New Zealand and breakfasts were excellent too (both included in the rate). And of course the location is legendary. Be aware the property recently changed hands from local ownership to a larger hospitality group and we felt staffing and overall level of service were wobbly given the price. My guess is staff is being rotated through from other properties in the portfolio and there may have been turnover from other long-time employees. Hopefully things will improve as the transition continues, and hopefully also the new owners will invest in updating the nice-but-still-20-years-old facilities. This is still a must-stay place due to its location, with the food being a bonus, but there is work to be done before the full experience matches the expectation set by the price point.

Overpriced and lacks soul. We were disappointed in our experience at Fiordland Lodge. The location is beautiful but the hotel lacks the authentic hospitality we’d expect based on the price point. The service was inattentive, the property felt deserted, and we experienced surprising things like our breakfast fruit smelling like onion/garlic (likely cut by a vegetable knife). Would not recommend staying here even if it was half the price.

The location is absolutely stunning and truly one of a kind. The views and atmosphere are remarkable, and the kitchen deserves special recognition — the chef is excellent and the dinners were memorable in both quality and presentation. Unfortunately, the service does not match the standard the lodge aims for. Staff were largely inattentive, and the management appeared disinterested rather than welcoming or solution-oriented. Housekeeping also lacked thoroughness, which was surprising given the price point and the lodge’s positioning. The lodge clearly wants to operate in a premium / luxury segment, but based on our experience, the overall experience does not live up to it. As a result, the price–performance ratio doesn’t align in our opinion.

This was a lovely stop on our honeymoon. A locally owned lodge with great service, hospitality, and food! They also helped arrange amazing tours of the Milford and Doubtful Sounds. We’re excited to return!

The Fiordland Lodge was our final stay on our honeymoon and it was the perfect end to a perfect trip. The room was cozy with a fantastic view and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. We also highly recommend having dinner here as well, all the meals were delicious.

The hotel has several strengths: a convenient location for exploring the area, a beautiful cabin aesthetic with towering wooden beams in the lobby and stone fireplace, exceptional views of the lake and mountains, two outdoor hot tubs (book your slot in advance!) and sauna, fantastic food, and really excellent, warm service. I gave it five stars for these reasons but there are a couple things to note: (1) there’s no gym or spa, and a spa in particular would be a very welcome amenity given that most people come here for hiking and other outdoor activities, so it would be a nice post-exertion treat, plus if you have a rainy day where something gets canceled, it’s the perfect Plan B. (2) in that same vein, the hotel doesn’t have a laundry service! Neither paid nor self-serve. Nor do they have a collective dry room or sufficient space in the individual rooms to dry things; ours didn’t have a heated towel rack even. We’re in one of the wettest spots on the planet! This seems like a central oversight to not cater to the reason that most people come here. We put our muddy, wet shoes in front of the lobby fire to dry overnight, which the management encouraged, and that was fine but not ideal. (3) Breakfast is entirely a la carte, and it’s delicious, but it would make everyone’s life easier to have a few basics out on a counter for self service: yogurt, fruit, granola, peanut butter, milks etc. We were constantly asking the waiter for things, and it felt annoying for both parties.

Stunning setting and lovely staff who go out of their way to make it a memorable experience. Highlight was the log fire, comfy beds and a helicopter to the Kepler track (complete with a packed lunch from the chefs). 100% recommend
