Firehouse Brewing Co. – Rapid City, South Dakota - Gastro Obscura

"Built in 1915 and listed on the National Historic Register, Firehouse Brewing Co. is a vibrant example of Rapid City’s historical past. Inside “The Firehouse,” as it is called by locals, is South Dakota’s oldest operating brewery. The bar is adorned with authentic South Dakota firefighting memorabilia from the days of Rapid City’s first fire brigades—including the original fire pole, ladders, patches, and even a vintage water tanker hanging from the ceiling. Rapid City’s early fire department consisted of three hose companies organized in 1881 and a hook-and-ladder company. The department became formally organized in 1907, and in 1915 this fine new fire hall was built. The two-story building, constructed of brick and Fall River sandstone, exemplifies the Chicago School architectural style. Following the practice of urban fire departments in those days, this one was built with living quarters for firemen, as well as offices, on the second floor. The fire trucks were downstairs, and the firefighters slid down a smooth brass pole when the fire call came in. Now home to Firehouse Brewing Company, the building still has its fire pole. This place is better than excellent. It's in an old fire department bldg for starters. We went to the restaurant side, and it was just great. Nice menu, and JAYDEN our waitress was superb, with her hustle and gorgeous smile... I had the pork queso, positively scrumptious! My daughter had the buffalo 🦬 lasagna, another great choice. My wife had the Rancher's Pie (shepherds pie). That was close to exceptional. We sat in the covered outdoor seating. The have 'open outdoor seating' as well, plus a whole 2nd floor in addition to standard main area dining and a bar area. Prices were reasonable. I couldn't find a thing to not love. Background music was the right volume, and we could easily talk to each other- it was semi crowded but pleasing quiet. We will ABSOLUTELY come back, this place is a winner!!!!! 🏆🏆

We saw this place on a morning walk and my daughter was begging to try it. Super cool atmosphere but the service was not great and the food was terrible. First, we were seated at a dirty table with used silverware and ketchup on the table. Our waiter spoke very quietly and was not personable at all. He took our order, brought our food and never checked on us again until he brought the check. I ordered The Captain. The ribs were 80% fat and the brisket was extremely dry. The sides were delicious though (green beans and coleslaw). My daughter ordered chicken nuggets and french fries. I actually got frustrated with her for complaining about her food but then I tried one of her chicken nuggets and literally gagged. They were cold and slimy and had a very rubbery texture. Almost like they were raw but I’m pretty sure they were precooked and frozen. My daughter started crying on the way back to the hotel and said her stomach was hurting and thought she might throw up. We are currently spending our last night in town fighting over the bathroom!

Google
We loved the ambience. Being seated outdoors between the two murals was great. The fish and chips were okay, The fries were better than the fish. My food order was kind of a disaster. Even though the boneless wings were not tagged as spicy, it made my tongue burn. I had ordered the side carrots and celery. The carrots were slimy and parts of them had deteriorated into mush. Although they removed the cost for the carrots and celery as I requested I think they should have comped the wine or something to make up her serving something that was so obviously inedible.

The Firehouse Brewing Company has such a wonderful atmosphere whether you are sitting at one of the tall tables or their beautiful patio. They have one of the vast patio areas. Occasionally, featuring live music on the patio area. Firehouse features a wide selection of beer brewed there. They have a wide variety of menu items. The artichoke dip and beer bread is one of the all time best!!! Their Reuben is probably the best I have ever had! Pair it with their Gorgonzola Ale soup and it’s a meal that is hard to beat. They have an Asian Tuna salad that is wonderful!!

Prime Rib (Friday night special) was a bit dry and not super flavorful. Asparagus and mashed potatoes were delicious. Good price. Beer was good.

Google
Had a great time sampling flights of beer. Appetizer prices seemed a bit high. Portions on all the food were big! Family friendly atmosphere. Great spot for local history also, RCFD station No. 1.

Google
Great waitress! Helpful, speedy, present but not in the way. Loved the setting. Very interesting. Food was good. Fries were better than the Reuben. Prices were pretty fair. I would definitely recommend it and would return.

Logan is a great representation of how one sould be seved. Very genuine and his check in time was spot on. Now the food is.... very good. Do try the cricket burger!

Yelp
Volley, career fire or a fire buff? This place is definitely for you. Love the history of this station turned restaurant and brewery. Out door seating and plenty of indoor seating. Food was good along with the sides. Check out plenty of fire themed craft brews. You can even stop at their gift shop and pick up a souvenir or if micro brews are not your thing they also have a great wine selection.

Yelp
Ambiance: Centrally located in downtown Rapid City. Sat outside in patio area. Overall was decent. Beer: I like sours. Tried a flight with Prairie Twilight and Tipsy Flamingo. These lacked any consistent flavor. I would not call these sours. Infernal Glow is an Imperial Gose. WAY overpowering on the sea salt. I honestly couldn't drink more than a sip. The final choice of the flight was the Blazin Mango. It was indeed spicy, but also quite hoppy. Not enjoyable. Food: We came mostly to try the beer, but did have some apps and the kids had chicken nuggets. Between the boneless wings, onion rings, fries and chicken nuggets, we were glad we didn't spend any more to try the entrees. Service: Unfortunately Becca was either having a bad day, or truly did not want to be there. She wasn't rude, but there was no smile, no friendly hello, but rather she just seemed bothered to be doing what she was doing. I do not like posting negative reviews, but overall it was disappointing and a thumbs down. I'd recommend spending your money elsewhere.

Yelp
After seeing the firetrucks advertising this place while driving across South Dakota, we decided to stop here for lunch when we finally arrived in Rapid City. Overall, not bad, but not overwhelmingly great either. Love the space in a historic firehouse. Took a little while to be noticed by waitstaff after being seated. Had a couple beers, a wheat and the stout. Wheat beer was a bit hoppy, more like an IPA. Stout was smooth. Ordered burgers and they lacked flavor. Again, not bad, but nothing to get excited about.

Yelp
Nothing spectacular here.... The food was ok, the beers were fine. The server was great, very friendly and quick to get what you needed. I spent most of my night waiting to finish so we could walk to another place in town that i much rather preferred...
google avatar

Haley J.

Yelp
Everything was just fine! Not poor and not fantastic. But they have lots of seating, in & outside, it has a family feel, large menu to choose from, and right downtown, so I can see while it was highly recommended. Our server was great, recommended his favorite items, and helped us with recommendations for ice cream right down the street!

Yelp
Service was good our service made a little mistake at the end with our bill but it wasn't that big of a deal he was a brand new guy he did a great job I can't remember his name I apologize but the pork schnitzel was amazing portions are large food came out piping hot drinks were cold service was fast they were packed The patio was packed too late levels inside packed and the food still came out really fast The place is so uniquely decorated up just a great experience overall
google avatar

Todd B.

Yelp
The atmosphere was so cool. Everything related to fire trucks and firehouses, they have it. The food was great, came out quickly, and the waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Casual atmosphere & many local brews. Decent selection of menu items & friendly wait staff. Stayed at a nearby hotel so very convenient. Tried Ranchers Pie & Fish & Chips & both were tasty after a long day of traveling. For brews tried the bell tower & the watch & they were smooth & refreshing.
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
My 1st meal in Rapid City. The service was great and the ambiance was unique and interesting. I had the Ranchers Pie which was similar to shepherds pie except the construction was a little different and it had cheese which was a nice touch. I was starving so I ate the whole thing even though it was pretty big.

D. R.

Yelp
We ordered fish and chips, a reuben sandwich, and rancher's pie. The rancher's pie made one of us very sick with stomach issues through Tuesday (while traveling to a conference). It did not taste right in the beginning and we should have told the waitress. We were seated immediately in the front area and service was good. On a Saturday night, it was very busy.

Jillian B.

Yelp
Great nachos, tators, beans, and Rueben! There was a hiccup on one thing but our amazing waiter Riley solved it!
google avatar

Bobbi G.

Yelp
Excellent place to eat! We arrived early for lunch and good thing because it hit very busy just after 12! We got the classic burger and the Reuben. Both were so delicious! The sides - mashed potatoes and fries, also delicious. Everything was so flavorful. Great choice for lunch, and it looks like the locals already know this.

Yelp
After seeing all the billboards with the retro full sized fire engines, we had to stop in and see what this place was all about. With a winery, pub, restaurant, outdoor patio, and sports bar, there is something for everyone. We started with a seat at the bar in the pub where we got a coupon for a free taste at the winery and discovered there was a sports bar upstairs. We watched the Notre Dame game (don't get me started on that loss to OH, what a disappointing ending). We also got them to change one of the TVs to the Gopher game. (Don't get me started on that loss to NW - OMG no one in their stadium yet they turn on a 4th quarter rally and win). Anyway, despite the losses, it was a great place to watch games. The staff was super nice about moving games around. Finally, I had to go check out the winery. More sophisticated vibe in there. I ended up buying a bottle of cab and SovBlanc to take home. Fun stop. Cudos to the marketing genius that brought us in.

Lisa W.

Yelp
Good food. Friendly server. We had the Reuben..excellent, ribs...excellent, brisket, not great, very tough. Reasonable prices. Enjoyed their craft beers. Would go there again.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
Great service. Place was fullish, so we ate at the bar. Bartender was top notch. Good recommendations. I had the Rueben and my bride had the pulled pork sandwich. Their red sauce is excellent. The ambiance is perfect. It was warm, not to light or dark, quiet and fun. Will go back.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
This had to be one of our worst meals in a long time. Ordered the shepherds pie or whatever it was called and it tasted like mashed potatoes and a can of hormel chili on top with a bit of cheese. Our other meal was a flatbread pizza and it tasted like it came out of a box, in fact it felt like you were chewing on the box.
google avatar

Yelp
Can't miss this place for all the roadside fire trucks/billboards! Decided to try the place and it as good!
google avatar

Yelp
Rapid City, SD has a great spot, whether you are looking for a good bite or a tasty beer. Why not both. Kyleigh, our waitress, helps us out tremendously with food choices. The best one being the pulled pork sandwich (The Firefighter). This was one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've had. The Pork con Queso was equally delicious. It was a great dinner. The environment was very inviting for a Sunday evening. Everyone there looked lively. The ambiance was perfect for a Sunday night. Kyleigh was awesome. From her recommendations to her friendly and professionalism, Kyleigh was very helpful. This is a cool place to visit when you find yourself in Rapid City, South Dakota.
google avatar

Corrine T.

Yelp
Very cool interior! Our server at the bar was nice and social! Everyone's food order was delicious. Fun place to stop for a craft beer. Outdoor sitting area is awesome.
google avatar

Summer C.

Yelp
Amazing food. Pulled pork and the coleslaw was ON POINT. We were driving through so didn't get a chance to try the beer but everyone in our party loved their food and service. Cool gift shop... even bought a few shirts. Definitely coming back next time we go west!
google avatar

Darlene M.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was spot on. The outdoor atmosphere was relaxing and peaceful.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Decent food, decent service, ambiance was nice. Enjoyed the frescos and the outside eating area. Walked to the establishment from an ABNB downtown was great. Beer was good. The roadside advertising is definitely what drove us there.
google avatar

Stacey S.

Yelp
Very cool brewery with fire everything. Beers are pretty good. Great merch and great prices. Got 2 flights, some beers and loaded nachos. Food was meh but we liked the beers which is why I came here anyway. Got a really cool sweatshirt for my FF daughter. Stop in. Worth it. If you're a FF, bring a patch.
google avatar

Vivian M.

Yelp
Food was very mediocre and service was friendly but slow and forgettable. It's a very just average place but the atmosphere is cool
google avatar

George D.

Yelp
Tasty Food. Pork is awesome. Can't wait to try this again. Traveled 500 miles.. would do it again.
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
Great meal, burgers, lasagna, nachos, fish and chips and ranchers pie all came out quick and zero complaints. Pretty short wait, friendly and responsive staff, great prices.

Yelp
Firehouse is located in Rapid City's first fire hall, and they did a great job in restoring the interior and exterior of the building. The have a nice selection of beer on tap and my favorite was their Wild Bill, which had good malty taste. I asked the bartender for some food recommendations and we went with Fire Caps. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the appetizer as it lacked flavor. There was no taste of crab meat and the presentation seemed like an after thought. I'd only come back here for the beer.
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
Stopped in for a pre-dinner beer on a Sunday evening. Grabbed a seat at the bar. Place was busy but bartender handled it all in stride. Friendly service, fairly quick and good beer. We did t try any food but the menu looked varied and the food we saw being delivered looked good. Firehouse ambiance was fun.
google avatar

Angela N.

Yelp
We ate here are our first night of our vacation in Rapid City. Beer choices were "ok". Not big on IPA's so not a lot of other choices. I had their jambalaya which was good but extremely spicy! My husband had a burger. Not a real exciting place so to speak and our server didn't have any recommendations. Not bad but was expecting much more.
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Dodged a bullet here... Stood in the entryway for 7 minutes while they figures out how to seat the people in front of us. Got seated and the hostess dropped us off menus and I was like, "hey! How's it going?" This girl didn't say a word and didn't acknowledge us at all. We sat there 7 minutes and no one came over so we left. My neighbor warned me - "don't go to Firehouse!" and we didn't listen. Hopefully you will. $20 for a burger and awful service. No thank you.
google avatar

Cortney Y.

Yelp
Saw the billboards on the 90 and decided to stop in. Kids loved the free fire hat. Service was fast and food was good. Love the decorations.
google avatar

Isaac A.

Yelp
We had a great time here, right in the heart downtown Rapid City. We almost skipped this establishment due to a few of the other reviews, but decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did. There are 3 parts to the place: the winery, brewery/restaurant, and a rooftop. I had their flight (it was like $14 to try all 9 beers they had on tap) and enjoyed several of the beers. All of the food we had was great and the service was fast. We left with a Mt. Rushmore-themed wine bottle and a crowler. Our waitress was great as well.
google avatar

Paul F H.

Yelp
Another city, another brew pub, another three star review--but that's not all bad--because establishments such as the Firehouse Brewing Company ensures that cross-country travelers like us can get decent beer and food in places like Rapid City. I ordered a bison burger basket along with my beer. Bison can be a tad dry compared to beef, and that was somewhat true for my sandwich--but not terribly so. The fries were generic but adequate. The beer was fine -- as I recall I ordered a red ale, or amber ale. The fire department decor made sense as the building apparently was a firehouse at one time. Service was OK though it took flagging down a server from another table to get our second beer. Servers should be selling, especially when customers are ready to buy.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
We absolutely loved this spot! They have indoor and outdoor seating, wines from their winery next door, and such tasty food. We started with the boneless wings and loved them! The portion size was huge, the chicken was white meat, and the sauce was unique. I would recommend getting the Blue Cheese Burger with a side of onion rings! The onion rings were so crispy - I typically don't like an onion ring but the waiter suggested them so we did, and loved them! The burger had great flavor, was high quality meat, and was cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Chet D.

Yelp
Traveling through South Dakota on our recent road trip we stopped in Rapid City and had a delicious meal at the Firehouse Brewing Co. It's in the original city fire station. There are two different dining areas - outside (partially under a roof) in what I assume was the original fire truck garage) was too loud for me - so we chose the indoor seating, near the bar. We had the Pork con Queso, pulled pork - which was awesome! And they had a tasty selection of draft local beer - a good lunch stop in Rapid City. Our server was great - friendly and attentive. The ambiance with all the fire fighting memorabilia adds to the experience.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
The interior is exceptional. They really kept the firehouse theme and all the items looked authentic. The billboards on the freeway with real fire tracks was awesome and brings in the crowds. The sandwich was ok, the service was really good. We had to wait to be seated, which was odd with so many tables, but they may have been short staffed.

Violet G.

Yelp
The IPA was the best beer I have ever had!!!! I would highly recommend this place for the best beer and ambience! Great location too! I had the fish and chips, it was good. Also the poke nachos which weren't the best. Server forgot our appetizer and I had to go look for him to pay my bill.
google avatar

Yelp
Online hours are incorrect. We tried to go on a Sunday around 8:30pm and it was already closed even though online it said it was open until 10pm. We went the next night after dinner instead. The inside is spacious with a cozy vibe, but that's about where the good ends and the bad begins. It was not very crowded with a few couples sitting around the bar so after checking the menu, we expected that we'd get served rather promptly. Wrong. The bartender was not around at first and when he did show up, he looked right at us, then kept walking to check on one of the customers already sitting at the bar. No big deal, just a little longer of a wait. What was weird was when he finally took our order and was pouring our beers, he told one of the waitresses behind the counter to come check our IDs and for some reason, it felt very frosty when she came over to us. Just her tone of voice felt off like she was trying to direct anger at us. We just got our beers and went upstairs to sit down. I had gotten one of their lagers and it was ok but pretty flat and my friend was not enthused by her beer either so we decided to leave after we finished our drinks. On our way out, I stopped by the bar to drop off my empty glass and the same waitress from earlier looked over and glared at me. Even my friend noticed and asked what I had done to the girl lol. I think it's a cool spot to get a drink but the service was not welcoming at all. Not sure if I did something without knowing but I don't think it's any way to treat a customer.
google avatar

Alan W.

Yelp
Rapid City has a limited number of restaurants. Firehouse is a cool, fun place to visit. The food is only average though. The staff however was super great, being very friendly & attentive. I ordered fish & chips. The fish was a lot of breading & sadly came out over cooked & very hard. The fries were basic fries. And the cole slaw was basic cole slaw. Oh well.
google avatar

Hassan A.

Yelp
Well if you're planning to watch anything besides minor league hockey, you may want to consider somewhere else. We're here from Iowa to obviously watch Caitlin Clark in the final four and the bartender told me "sorry man can't switch the big tvs off the rapid city rush". Also, food is bad.
google avatar

Kristi H.

Yelp
We had read good things on line and decided to try this place for our one night in Rapid City. Location is cool and parking was easy. Even though it was busy, we were able to get a table right away. Drinks were great- root beer, Bloody Mary and the Teacher cider ale. Child's burger was okay. Fries were good. Adults ordered the Firefighter and Pigger & Grinner - decided to cut them in half and share. They managed to taste the exact same considering the toppings were different but maybe that's because they were so bland, they were almost flavorless. The Gargonzola soup was okay but warm.. almost cold. Disappointing. The table was sticky. Bathroom sinks covered in water and messy. Server was nice.. You could skip this place. Maybe try the Mexican place down the street instead.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Our server was sweet but very forgetful: water, silverware, appetizer plates. Brought wrong flavor drink. Food was awful. Bacon on hubby's burger wasn't cooked. He removed the raw bacon and said the burger was barely edible. Friend ordered Ranchers Pie which he said tasted like chili. I had fish which I enjoyed.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
I must admit after seeing tons of billboards (some even with a real fire truck next to them!) all the way on the drive from Souix falls to Rapid City I expected this place to be an overpriced tourist trap. It was not, we all loved it! This is the kind of restaurant that has something for everybody. I was thrilled to see the beyond burger on their menu and although it comes with cheese the server had no problem with me substituting mushrooms to make it vegan. Another thing we loved was the size of this place. With six of us we expected to need to wait a while to sit down but we were sat right away not because it wasn't busy but because there are plenty of tables. It was a very very hot day when we came but we have a short summer where we are from so we try to be outside as much as possible. We were seated outside in the garage and it was the perfect temperature! They had fans and some kind of mist cooling system, it was perfect!
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
Meh. The billboards on the way into the city were enticing, but this is definitely a tourist trap. + our server Aspen was wonderful + 10ish beers on tap, can do a flight of all + outdoor seating with fire pits + fries were good - arrived at 7:30 and the older lady immediately barked at us in a condescending tone that they "close" at 8. Website says 10. - we sat and then waited awkwardly for service for over 15 minutes. Thought y'all closed at 8? - the food was edible, but sorely overpriced and underwhelming
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
After a long morning hiking around Badlands NP on a rather hot day, a refreshing beer sounded good. All the billboard advertising along I-90 into Rapid City worked. Initially stopped into the winery thinking that it was the same business. There was only one choice for a dark one, the Smoke Jumper Stout. The decor was on point with lots of firefighter gear and various paraphernalia from different fire fighting companies. The beer unfortunately fell flat. No depth and fairly light in taste. I think a bottle of non-nitro Guinness would have more creaminess. Perhaps the other beers are better?
google avatar

Sydney C.

Yelp
We were walking around downtown when we found this place. We decided to try it out since we had seen lots of Firetrucks on the side of the highway when we moved here. We went on a Friday night around 5pm. It was busy but they do take reservations. We had a great server. Funny and great service. My husband got the Reuben and I got the Buffalo bacon cheeseburger. Both were great. They have homemade ranch that is to die for. The server called it "Nectar of the Gods'
google avatar

Kyle E.

Yelp
First off, we were very hungry! Passing through and saw signs for Firehouse Brewing all over I-90. We arrive at 5:45pm on July 4th. Got a table and ordered quickly. Ordered firehouse burger and roasted chicken. Service was good. Server was new but did he's best. Ambiance is very dark and loud. Beer was good we both had the #1. The food on the other hand was very bland. Need some more flavors and spices. The French fries were delicious though. Burger patty was dry and lacking flavor. Wouldn't recommend eating here. But differently stop in for a beer. Please don't want your time eating here.
google avatar

Bill D.

Yelp
Service was good but food was just "Meh". Nothing earth shattering, just there. Place was doing the business but the four in our party felt it was just marginal. Service was good, not great.
google avatar

Teresa M.

Yelp
I hesitated on coming in after seeing 3 stars on here. In the end, it was close to us & open, so, in we came... and I'm so happy we did! We were seated immediately tho it was busy. I was prepared for sub-par service and pleasantly surprised to get the EXACT OPPOSITE. We were provided with excellent service & had 2 very solid & generously portioned meals. The brews were decent & paired well with the food. On inquiring about the fabulous bread, our gal brought us out a full container to take with us, and even included utensils and butter for the road. Score! In looking over the menu, there are certainly some run of the mill bar dishes on it. Clearly they also have some less ordinary & far better options available as well. Choose wisely & be rewarded. ; )

Colleen C.

Yelp
Food was good. We split the reuben and a salad. Our waitress was very nice and accomodating. Ambiance is very fun. It's an old fire house, so use your imagination.
