"A trip to Hamburg isn’t complete until you’ve visited the Sunday fish market. In operation since 1703, the Fischmarkt offers fish in abundant diversity, from fresh to smoked to pickled, as well as a wealth of flowers, fruits and vegetables, secondhand clothing, and souvenirs, all of which can be bought from a wide selection of loud-but-friendly hawkers. The neighboring Fish Auction Hall has an equally legendary status for other reasons—open from 5 a.m. in the summer (and 6 a.m. in the winter), it keeps the party going for those spilling out of the clubs on the Reeperbahn with its delicious fish sandwiches, breakfast buffet, and vibrant sound track, which ranges from rock ’n’ roll to skiffle, country, and jazz and prompts plenty of dancing from young and old alike."

We went at 8am so we wouldn't miss it. We had a few different things but we would have preferred more variety. For example, there were no stands selling oysters. Every stall was selling very similar products.

During Hamburg visit , i believe that was one of the most remarkable points is to visit the fischmarkt where you would enjoy the most , either with the mosaic of people attending , or with the sellers that represents different nations or with the style they present their products or with the amazing music shows at the wonderful old building of fish market or with the different products ...

Forget all the fish markets you know. Come here on Sunday at 7 a.m. (in winter, 5 a.m. in summer) Fresh food and great music will welcome you. You will be able to sit at long tables and chat with local people. Unfortunately there are long queues in front of all the kiosks but it's worth the wait.

No need to get there too early, I’d say get there around 8 is enough for the experience. Coffee is ok, good for whole sale, best deep fried fish I’ve ever tried.

Very interesting place to visit, especially as a visitor in Hamburg. You can go back in time thanks to the sellers shouting and inviting you to their stands. It’s pretty crowded, loud and dirty, but you can get fresh fish and delicious Fischbrötchen

Yelp
What a cool experience at this Hamburg Fish Market! Whether you're looking to go as a tourist and try some tasty treats, or stop by as a local and get produce for the week, or a local restaurant looking for fresh catch, this place is for you! We arrived around 8am on a Sunday and stayed until closing at 9:30. The area was full of vendors with apparel, souvenirs, handmade German items, fresh fish, treats, veggies, fruits, and more. I enjoyed having a smoked salmon fish sandwich for breakfast. Highly recommend this on the water experience.

Yelp
BE AWARE on sunday erarly morning - only! WHAT TO KNOW! Legendary Hamburg Fish Market, is a must see in Hamburg. Don't get confused by the name "Altonaer Fischmarkt". This is, because it's located in the former City of Altona, which became part of Hamburg a long time ago. Don't expect the sell fish nowadays directly from a fishermas boat. These times have gone. You will find mobile sales stands, trailers, food trucks that sell fish. Fish - but not only fish, flowers, fruits and vegetables, living chicken and doves may be found as well. BE EARLY!!! Best time to come here, 4-6am in the Morning, when people leave the clubs, have a last "Fishbrötchen", the traditional fish roll, before the went home. Or, maybe for a last beer to the close Haifisch Bar (Shark Bar). DON'T BE LATE If you cum late, Fishmarket turns into a overcrowded tourist spoiled hotspot, that offers lots of useless things, souvenirs. That's the time, the people from Hamburg already have left this place. THE BARKERS The Fishmarket is also famous for it's Barkers. One of the most famous is Aale Dieter (eel Dieter), selling eels - sometimes just throwing some of them into the crowed. Catch them, if you can!

Yelp
Oh, the fish market! It's an institution and not to be missed! After a night out, this is the best spot to go. They open around 5am on Sunday morning, so you can go straight from a bar or club to the market and enjoy some fresh air and amazing food. Though it's called the fish market, and they do focus on fish related stalls, you can buy pretty much anything here! From live stock to fashion! It all started as the gathering point for fishers who would sell the fresh catch here on Sunday mornings, from there it grew to the institution it has become today. A huge market with a plethora of stalls selling pretty much anything you can imagine. Make sure to drop into to market hall for a solid breakfast and continuous live music on two alternating stages on both ends of the hall. Get back your strength and enjoy the invigorating atmospere before heading back out to the market. Whether it's fresh flowers, produce, clothes, souvenirs, spices, teas, trinkets, jewellery, shoes or, of course, fish you're looking for, you'll find it! Then it's off to bed and sleep through Sunday!

Yelp
I did not do this right. 1. I didn't stay up drinking and partying the night before 2. I woke up sober and didn't hit the beer booth(s) as my first thing 3. I went alone 4. I didn't eat that fish sandwich thing Things that I DID do: 1. Woke up helllllla early to get here 2. Showed up with cash 3. Bought some pre-brekkie snacks and enjoyed the band indoors 4. Enjoyed the banter, singing, and sights at all the stalls Do this properly and don't be like me. Screw your breakfast plans for the day and beer it up. You're welcome.

Yelp
It's 4:45am on a Saturday night and you've grown tired from the sights and sounds of Reeperbahn (pronounced Raper bon, rolling the first R), where do you go? The Fischmarkt (yes, the fish market) of course! (But don't get it confused with the St Pauli Fischmarkt!) This popular and weekly event only happens on Sunday, so plan accordingly. It would be easier to take the bus or metro to Altona after 5am but this area can be easily reached by foot in less than 20 minutes from Reeperbahn. Just follow your nose and ears to the smell of fresh seafood and schnitzel and loud competing vendors and live music. I know it sounds strange, but I assure you it's a feast for the senses that you won't soon forget. Come alone or with friends and find yourself buying, partying and living like a local. Good luck finding a vendor that takes cards. Bring cash, but don't worry you won't break the bank here. There's a lot of good deals to be found since it's like a beer garden meets farmer's market meets flea market meets "food truck" extravaganza meets small venue music festival and honestly, how can you go wrong with that? Unfortunately, don't think they'll stay there after 11am. Music, food and shop vendors, usually stop or close around 10am. If the weather is really excellent though, they may stay MAYBE an hour longer. Usually the crowd moseys on down to the pier at St Pauli but perhaps you may find yourself snoring away the rest of the morning at church. Either way, you'll leave satisfied. Prost!

Yelp
We woke up late. Oh no, we missed the fischmarkt, I thought! It was already 9am, and you can see most of the other reviewers here were much more German than us. But we rode out anyhow, determined to see the last bit of market as it was our last day in Hamburg. Imagine our surprise when we saw the market continuing in full swing! We did our touristy thing, buying snacks and taking in the rock music. We lounged by the Elbe, watched bemusedly as a drunk dude got kicked out of the main hall, and strolled happily by various fruit and food vendors. I had had fischbroetchen a few times on our trip. One at the Hamburger Dom, another at the Sankt Pauli match, and we had yet more fish at restaurants around the Hafencity and Altstadt. Fish is what one eats in Hamburg. So, when I casually plunked down about 3 EUR at Marx & Sohn's huge food trailer, I was looking forward to another twist on the staple. That fish sandwich changed my life. The crisp was divine, the temperature perfect. The insides so flavorful, juicy and fresh. The bread was there as an accessory without overwhelming the dish: same for the sauce. O M G. Go. Keep Going. Eat fischbrotchen at fischimbiss. Hope it will change your life too.

Yelp
I love love love coming here. I know it's quite early but it is absolutely worth it. I have been twice and each time is always a great time. The first time, I was absolutely blown away by the fish sandwiches, coming from America, I have never seen anything like it. I loved the energy and seeing both drunk friends having a great time and families bonding. Both times, there was live music which just added to the energy. If this is your first time to Hamburg, PLEASE make this a must on your to do list. There are all kinds of vendors, from retail to fruit stands. Anytime I come to Hamburg, I make sure Sunday is spent here

Yelp
I consider this a true Hamburg institution. I have been coming to the Fischmarkt since my first stay in Hamburg in 1999 and still don't believe any trip in town is complete without a visit here (even if I haven't always managed to drag my butt out of bed to make it here on all my previous trips!) It's a feast for the senses-- lots to see, smell and taste. I'm not normally a huge fan of crowds, but I'll put up with them here to get the fun bargains. I especially love the miked-up vendors (or shouters) who sell their baskets of fruit, bags of candy or plants for 10€. Totally entertaining even if you don't speak German! Just a few tips: -- Remember the market is only open 0500-0930 on Sundays. The earlier you're there, the better. Many people go straight after a Saturday night of partying... I've been known to do it myself ;-) -- Be sure to bring cash. Many of the vendors here don't take credit cards and you'd hate to miss the great deals. -- Try a fischbrot, a piece of bread topped with fresh fish. They're a Hamburg staple and especially good at the Fischmarkt. Enjoy and Viel Spaß!

Yelp
The Fischmarkt is a symbol of Hamburg. Even if you have never been there you have heard stories about it. And indeed this is the MUST-SEE place in Hamburg, but be careful it is only on Sunday mornings, and only when the river hasn't overflowed it (yes this happens some times in really bad weather). The Fischmarkt is the ultimate place to do 3 things: buy cheap food ranging from sea food, fruits, meat, cheese etc; buy clothes, live animals, plants and other smaller non-eatable things; to have an after-party snack or even to continue the party. It's location is on the harbor and is parallel to the Reeperbahn, so it is not a trouble to go party the whole night at at 6am go on the Fischmarkt and eat the famous Fischbroetchen, shop, party some more and at 10am head home to rest for the rest of the weekend. cheers

Yelp
I recommend coming here Sunday mornings after partying all night Saturday (since they're only open on Sunday mornings). It was really an experience! I got there just as they were opening and even though it was freezing... there were so many people there already! There's a building that had a band playing music, yes at 6AM, and they were selling beer, waffles, and seafood all around with tables on the inside for people to sit. Outside, there were a lot of vendors selling all sorts of items, hats, scarves, shoes, seafood, fruit, etc. It was just a great experience to see everything and to mingle with the Hamburgers! I would def bring cash since it seems like the vendors don't accept credit cards. Get some coffee to warm you up or some fresh fruit juice to get your daily dose of vitamin C. They were selling a lot of seafood but I didn't try any... I hope to next time I'm there. Before you leave GET A BASKET OF FRUIT!!! It's only 10EU and you get all sorts of fruits: mango, banana, apple, tangerine, pineapple, etc. It's SUCH a good deal and the fruits are so fresh and yummy!

Yelp
I would say this place is a must see, but also a once-see. Once you go, you don't really need to go back. Most stalls are selling baskets that they combine in front of you of various goods (I saw baskets of snacks, toys, fruit, pasta, and bundles of fish). There's a lot of yelling and it's pretty loud and crowded. Very cool to see once, but I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings about this place. Yeah, there are food stalls, but not sure if it's worth it unless you love paying for entrance and waiting two hours just to order your food, which is mediocre to good (depending on specific booth). And then all the gymnastic to eat it without bumping into anyone. I definitely wouldn't do this again, but I know some people just enjoy crowds.

Yelp
I'm so glad I got off my ass and woke up early on a Sunday morning to check the fish market out. Cool to see some partying going in the morning. Why is it usually always at night? lol. I got some great seafood here. Most of the vendors serve similar items so it was all about clean presentations for me to choose them. I got a delicious shrimp sandwich and some fried fish on skewers while I was here. This place is a must while in Hamburg.

Yelp
Well I finally did it... I've managed after 6 weeks in this city to drag my sorry self down to the fish market, which opens very early and was always going to be a major feat in getting me there. Instead of getting up early we followed the footsteps of many past tourist clubbers before us...wandering down the docks and into the fish market after a long boozy night out in Hamburg. The first thing you'll notice is surprisingly the place smells very clean... the scent of the fish is fresh and not over powering so walking throughout the spread of the place is not unpleasant. There's coffee to help sober you up, more alcohol for those who feel they had not had enough and plenty of tasty ocean treats to tuck into for breakfast. Rug up as it's bloody freezing down here in the early hours of the morning, will definitely try to come back another day when I'm not so drunk and I can actually purchase some lovely seafood for Sunday Supper.

Yelp
There are many landmarks in Hamburg, but in the going-out-getting-drunk category there are only two, both of which are equally important to see. The world-famous Reeperbahn is one, and the fish market is the other. The main thing to note about the fishmarkt is that it's only open between 5am and 11am Sunday morning. Therefore the suggested way of seeing it is a big Saturday night out on the Reeperbahn, then stumble down to the river at around 6am, have some breakfast and carry on drinking. There's a huge outdoor market and a huge hall (the old fishmarkt) full of people drinking with a band playing at either end
google avatar

Qype User (maggie…)

Yelp
It is a very cool place, lots of things on sale and they are very cheap! The salers cry at their top voice to get customs. I even saw one who was jumping up side down, really crazy saler! And there is a big hall very you can get nice food and listen to live music from the cool band! You should definitely come here when you are in Hamburg.
google avatar

Qype User (filcha…)

Yelp
How have I not reviewed the fish market?! If you have the energy, it's great fun to join the hoards of stumbling bodies out of the clubs and bars of the Reeperbahn and down the hill to the fish market. You'll find trailers galore packed with tasty fruits of the sea, which to be honest at this point I can never really stomach, so I throw mine to the seagulls and watch the sun come up.

Yelp
It is always fun to come here on a Sunday morning, for Fischbrotchen or Hot Calamares and Coffee for breakfast on the go on a crisp, clear day. There is something for everyone, and it get very busy especially around 9 o'clock The main format is that people gather around the stalls watching the salesman piling up fruit, or fish, or cheese, or pasta, or flowers, or biscuits, or chocolate for a fixed price (usually 10 euro or 15 euro depending on the stall) with the idea being that you need to wait until the pile is big enough but that you make your offer before someone else get it. In reality many of them just have a basket already piled up, but its the fish stalls that do it the right way. A tip is to go right at the end and haggle very hard, making sure you get what you want and they arent just chucking in any old rubbish. Another tip be careful of the sweet shop pick and mix! 3 moderate bags of treats ended up costing almost 20 euro! The whole thing starts to wind down at 9.30am with most of it gone by 11am. We tend to go early then walk back to the portuguese quarter on the other side of Landungsbrucken station for a nice coffee and kuche.

Yelp
Back to Germany again. I can't understand why no one has written a review about this vast and interesting place and I'm an American. Great for food and photo taking. Close to the monorail and lots of ships out there even a submarine!! This is the highlight of Hamburg Germany as this is a great port city!!

Yelp
Whatever you do, don't get up early! Go out and party, and then go to Fischmarkt. Otherwise it's just not the same. Get some Backfisch - it's delicious when it's fresh, and make sure to buy coffee outside the huge hall (at the end of the market). Inside it's expensive and doesn't resemble much java anymore. Around 6 AM or something, a band starts playing inside.

Yelp
ja ja ja! can't claim to have been recently. matter a fact, yelp wasn't even public let alone gone through series a funding or even a notion in a dorm room when i last visited. hell i think deutsche marks were still even the notes of choice however im insecure and want to claim mainstream european culture as i fancy this a favourite when on holiday. im bullshittin, was searching yelp for hamburgers as my dyslexia kicked in and input it into locale instead of search seeing how im in bed by 9:30 these days, the once in a blue moon when i do find myself out into the wee hours w/nothing open but the endup or crappy around the clock diners, i usually say to myself...member that time at the fish market in hamburg? and the sights, sounds, smells, smiles, surly, sassy, spontaneous, shitshow stories come back to me. man between the people, live music, energy and food in the middle of the night it's pure pleasure for any night owl or early riser pike place has got nothin on this wunderbar establishment

Qype User (cakeea…)

Yelp
This is one of the best things to do to experience Hamburg! Have to do it! The big old fishermen stack fish on a piece of parchment, yelling 10 EUROS 10 EUROS as they add more fish to the pile, till someone takes it for that price. It's a total experience, a must-do in Hamburg. Plan your trip around a Sunday morning (early!) at the Fish market!
