Calgary Is a Culinary Destination on the Rise

"A vast urban park so large that visitors are often surprised by how removed it feels from the city; it's a prime place to linger, walk, or bike and to pair outdoor time with stops at local cafes and eateries." - Jennifer Malloy

We walked through the eastern half of the park, and it took a couple of hours. This part of the park consists of prairie landscape and some bushes near the Fish Creek river. It was a little bit monotonous, but we found a few interesting places. It'd be better if you came here with bicycles. I really want to explore more wild west parts of the park.

Fish Creek Provincial Park is one of the largest urban parks in Canada, located in the southern part of Calgary. It spans over 13.5 square kilometers (5.2 square miles) and offers a mix of forested areas, open grasslands, and the winding Fish Creek, which flows into the Bow River.

I found the variety of landscapes refreshing. There are quiet spots by the river perfect for reflection or even a picnic, and more open areas where you can feel the breeze and soak in the sun. Wildlife is abundant here, making it easy to spot birds, deer, and even the occasional beaver. For me, Fish Creek is more than just a park—it’s a place to relax, reset, and appreciate nature. If you’re in Calgary and looking for an outdoor adventure that doesn’t take you far from the city, this park is a must-visit!

Spanning over 13.5 square miles (35 square kilometers), the park offers a mix of natural areas, picnic spots, and pathways for walking, biking, and birdwatching. The park follows the course of Fish Creek, which flows through the Bow River, and is known for its lush ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and meadows. Wildlife such as deer, beavers, and a variety of bird species can be seen in the park. Fish Creek Provincial Park is also home to historical landmarks, including the Bow Valley Ranch, as well as visitor facilities such as the Sikome Aquatic Facility, which is a man-made lake open for swimming during the summer. The park’s extensive trail system makes it a popular destination for outdoor activities, nature enthusiasts, and families. .:.Chat.G.P.T.:.

Spending evening in the fish creek neighbourhood is just soothing. No amenities or shops in the area. It has large playgrounds, river bank, pond, scenic beauty and very less crowd m. It’s a nice spot to take an evening walk.

Fish Creek Park truly has something for everyone. From swimming in the lake the hiking to walking, rollerblading to single track mountain biking. Bring the fam for a picnic and enjoy time at the creek on a warm night while the sun goes down. The facilities are modern and convenient, and access points are plentiful. The is a year round park and some lots close at night. Camping is not permitted. This is a provincial park within the city of Calgary. Lots of wildlife so enjoy and keep your best friends on their leash. Some pliéing in the winter months for bike commuters. A vast park with a bit of everything.

I have visited the Fish Creek Provincial Park three times in a month time; nevertheless, I have not yet explored it completely, for it is the second largest urban protected natural area in Canada that sprawls in an area of over 13.4 square kms. The enormous park provides picturesque natural scenes of forest area, grassy lands, lots of hills of various heights, creek, ponds, lakes, and over hundred trails and roads. I have yet to explore the southern side of the enormous park where Sikome Lake is situated. I intend to visit the park again to see some wild animals, birds, and the lake, soon. The park has more than 100 km paths of paved and unpaved trails as well as plenty of beaten paths for activities such as walking, jogging, running, cycling, ascending and descending hills, and capturing natural scenes of wildlife's flora and fauna. The creek that gives an impression of a mighty, long river is a prepossessing part of the park. There are some benches to relax and tables to enjoy picnic with your family and/or friends at several places and near the creek. Also, there are clean washrooms at different places in the park and along the creek. Today, for the fourth time, I visited the park. I went to the Sikome Lake which was way more beautiful and bigger than I had thought after seeing some of the pictures. Although there is an entry fee and a weekday, there were hundreds of people on a Wednesday evening. Had I not gone to the lake, I wouldn't have been able to see the extremely beautiful part of the park. Anyone visiting Calgary must add this park in their things to do in the beautiful city.

Yelp
Fish Creek Provincial Park is a place that the city of Calgary is so lucky to have . It is a natural reservoir that runs right through the city of Calgary. People can walk bike swim . There is two restaurants there and animals love it in there. I would never spend time personally alone in fish creek because it can be dangerous. Homeless people live in the park under trees, etc. That's why it got a 4 because if you are alone - it is not safe. I would always go with someone and never at dark !

Yelp
I love Fish Creek, a park in the middle of the city that stretches on for miles? Yes please! I live closer to the end of the park on the south end and it's a great place to bike, walk, ski, or walk the dog. They have great pathways, bridges to switch sides on the river, and great views. It's always so relaxing being next to the river with all the big (by Calgary standards) trees around you. They've been working on the park a lot since the flood and there are still a few areas in need of repair but overall the pathways are well maintained. You can often see people fishing off the bank or boating down the river. Lots of people bring their dogs here to swim as well.

Yelp
I love fish creek park, it may not be the flashiest park in the world but in an urban/suburban atmosphere it offers an escape from buildings and houses and provides a vast natural setting for anyone to explore! I grew up in Calgary and fish creek was a place I spent a lot of time as a kid. Whether it was riding my bike, finding sticks, skipping rocks, catching frogs, roasting marshmallows, having bbqs, talking the dogs for a walk, going fishing with my cousin! I have a plethora of fond memories! Lots of things to do, and plenty of space to romp around! Fish creek is a humble setting that basically is what Calgary would have looked like without human beings being here (minus the maps, bridges and pathways hahaha) ! Check it out!

Yelp
Fish Creek is located in the Southern end of the Calgary. It's a good example of what Calgary looked like before the urbanized Calgary we see today. I was only at Fish Creek for a few hours on a Summer day as a tourist and only explored the trails near the Bow Valley Ranch visitor center. Visitor Center was closed on Sunday. The trails in this area are pretty tame, and there are plenty of bicyclists and local residents out for a walk. It's mostly flatland. Vegetation includes ponds, creeks and some scattered wooded areas. There are suburban residential areas immediately surrounding the park and a few trails lead directly into people's backyards. In the wooded area, there was a mini-trail we walked thru. Trail was completely shaded and surrounded by dense amount of trees. A cool breeze came thru and there were falling leaves all around us. It was an interesting experience. As an international tourist, time is especially valuable. Is it worth it spending a few hrs here vs spending that same additional time in Banff or the Three Sisters area? Hindsight probably I'd go with a few more hrs in Banff. Nonetheless, if you have a extra hrs in Calgary unplanned, this is a good stop. Parking is free.

Yelp
From the earliest days of my Canadian living to today, Fish Creek has always been there. I have never lived more than a five minute walk away from the park since I've moved to Calgary, and it is a staple for activities year-round. My earliest activities in the park were biking around the paths, getting a huge amount of speed off the severely sharp hill off Canyon Meadows drive right at the elbow of Bonavista and Parkland, then dreading the bike ride back up (always impossible, it had to be done by foot halfway up!) The log at Mallard Point was a great site for a first date almost ten years ago, we have had several cookouts in the Glennfield area, and we had our engagement photos taken around the Bow Valley Ranch. Recently I have found it to be a great area for rollerblading excursions: I live two minutes away from Glennfield, the middle of the park and will fan out in either direction: 1) Glennfield - Shannon Terrace. A 6 km journey filled with many hazardous hills and lush greenery, twists, turns and bridges. Definitely the scenic route. 2) Glennfield - Mallard Point. A 10.2 km journey across mostly serene fields and a couple of parallel runs beside the Bow river. Longer, and most of my friends live very near this run, so if I ever get the runs and need to use Erick's pristine bathrooms, or borrow a cup of sugar from Kenny, I can deviate from my trip without sacrificing too much time and energy. Fish Creek is a beautiful park, and a valuable Calgary institution. Visit it today, and beware the sasquatch on blades!

Yelp
A really good place to go if you're photographing a family or couple. There's some really good settings and backdrops to place and pose people. The park itself is pretty large so there's always a spot to be alone. The sunsets around the Ranche restaurant are pretty spectacular with wide open views.

Yelp
Fish Creek is expansive, beautiful and a peaceful escape from the daily grind. The bike path is nice and you can often spot wildlife along the river. It is a perfect place to collect your thoughts, get some exercise or spend some time with the one you love! ;-)

Yelp
Fish Creek Park is a beautiful area. It always surprises me how big it is! And who knew there were day-use picnic areas to reserve? Not this kid, at least not until last weekend. The park is full of paths and is well used by cyclists, walkers, runners, rollerbladers, and so on. I keep hearing that it's full of wildlife (there was a story about a cougar in Fish Creek park a couple of years back), but I have yet to see anything beyond your usual squirrels and birds. Being in the south end of the city, Fish Creek is a bit of a trek for me, but it's a gorgeous change of scenery from downtown.

Yelp
Fish Creek is one of my favorite things about Calgary. During the short sixteen months I lived in the city, I was only a ten minute drive or fifteen minute bike ride from Fish Creek, and I spent many a summer afternoon walking or biking its paths. On the few very warm days that we got last summer, I liked to wade across the shallow creek and sit on the bank reading a book with my feet in the water. Although Fish Creek can sometimes be busy, it's big enough that you'll always be able to find a nice spot to relax without too many people bugging you. Aside from the ample space to sit and contemplate nature, Fish Creek is great for exercising. There are a multitude of paved and unpaved paths for jogging and walking. You can take a nice short walk around the Shannon Terrace/Bebo Grove/Marshall Springs area, or if you're feeling ambitious you can walk the entire 16.7 kilometres across the park. The paved paths are also great for biking and rollerblading. I love the scenery in Fish Creek park, but let's be honest: it isn't Banff, and if you're expecting that, you'll be disappointed. But of all the cities I've lived in, I've never seen a park which is as large, as pretty, and as easily accessible as Fish Creek. That's what really makes it an amazing piece of Calgary: when you're in Fish Creek, you truly feel that you've left the city, but when you're ready to leave you're only minutes away from all the conveniences of modern city life. I love Fish Creek. Sadly I had to leave Calgary for work, but I'll be back some day, and when I move back I'll be sure to get a place near the park.

Yelp
Pretty average for a provincial park. I was surprised to see a lot of litter around and the park didn't seem to be maintained to a huge extent. I did love however the outdoor space for groups, which includes a large grill and room for lots of people to sit or to put tables down. And right in front was a great little field for activities--this would be a great place to have a company picnic or a birthday party for kids. However, I was expecting a lot more from the park, but one of the best features was the ice caves! With a lot of great bike trails, it's a great inner city park and cannot be compared to an out of city provincial park. All in all a good park--but it needs to be kept cleaner! Maybe implement more recycling and trash bins so that people will be more inclined to clean up after themselves too.

Yelp
Im lucky enough to be able to say I have lived very close to Fish Creek my entire life. In an unfortunate flood, a lot of the park was damaged, and doesnt look like it used to , but they did a great job of cleaning up and redoing the paths that washed away, and removing the debris. Its a large park, where you'll find people walking, running, hiking, biking and picnicing. A nice place to feel like you've "gotten away from it all" yet are still conveniantly located within the city limits. In the summer Sikome lake opens up. Its not the best man made lake, if we were comparing to say Mckenzie, or Midnapore lakes, but not a bad options for those of us who dont live in areas with these facilities. Fish Creek also has a stable for trail rides, and The Ranche a historic building that has a beautiful restaurant, and holds events such as weddings. There is a cute little cafe not far down the way from the Ranche that is open seasonally. I cant recall the name, but it offers soups, sandwiches and ice cream. The Friends of Fish Creek is an organization who help preserve the Park and educate users. They have details on events they hold, and more about who they are @ www.friendsoffishcreek.org. Yelp
I walked 24km of Fish Creek today and this place is fantastic. I love that you can choose either paved or gravel paths and there are so many restrooms with flush toilets! The scenery is varied and lovely and the traffic is high enough that you feel safe at all times.

Yelp
My favourite place to go jogging! I love the scenery and how I can always see wild animals here! There's not a lot of hills, and the paved pathways makes it just a little easier on my ankles. I come here almost daily to get my dose of nature.

Yelp
This is unlike any spot in Calgary...at night when you can see the stars makes me feel like I am back in sask!!! Definitely my favorite spot in all of Calgary!!!

Yelp
Noticing the terrible review posted by Chad W., I was compelled to submit a positive review. Fish Creek is all that it is cracked up to be. It is a great place to enjoy a non-urban natural environment without leaving the city. Very few towns have that, and those that do have nothing on Fish Creek Provincial Park. It is HUGE!

Curtis L.

Yelp
My family moved to Evergreen last July, and having one of the largest municipal parks in NA is outstanding, and a privliedge we wouldn't take for granted. Not one day while taking in the scenery on the running trails or bike pathways is ever the same.
