I've been to Fish Shack several times over the past few months after my husband introduced it to me, and I've been loving it! We usually get two entrees and some soups or extra sides to share, and pretty much everything we've had has been great. My favorites are the fried catfish and the shrimp poboy -- the bread on the poboys is always perfectly toasted but still soft, and the ingredients are all super fresh. Great ratio of sauce to vegetables to protein as well; the sandwich is always stuffed full of shrimp, which is wonderfully cooked and lightly breaded with cornmeal for that extra texture.
The fried catfish is breaded with the same cornmeal mix, and it's always fresh and tasty. Huge fillets in the platter. I really enjoy the fries and hush puppies too. Sometimes hush puppies can be too dry, but the ones here are great. We also love the gumbo; it's super hearty and has a lot of protein. One of the rare misses is the clam chowder. The most recent time we tried it, it had a strange tangy flavor, and the thickness almost made it taste like some beer queso concoction. Not a fan. The slaw is just okay, but the fried okra is excellent and hugely portioned. Red beans and rice also huge, and also pretty great. My husband really likes the Santorini cocktail; I'm not into cilantro, so I've only had a bit, but what I've tried has been fresh and tasted good. We sometimes get the fried oysters with the catfish and it's cool that they'll usually tuck in an extra oyster when you get the combo platter. I'd skip the cod poboy though -- it seems like they don't bread that in-house, so it's covered in a typical fish-and-chips-esque batter, which is far inferior to the usual cornmeal breading IMO.
The employees here are awesome and will give us as much extra tartar sauce as we want, free of charge. One time we came by around 30 minutes before close and they were really gracious about it and said we didn't have to rush ourselves to get out before they started cleaning up. Looking forward to coming back soon!
