Few things feel more Byron than fresh seafood by the beach, and Fishheads Byron Bay delivers exactly that. We stopped by for a laid-back lunch and grabbed a table overlooking the beach — salty air, blue skies, and the sound of waves in the background. The atmosphere is relaxed and beachy, with a steady mix of locals in swimwear and tourists soaking up the coastal vibe. We ordered a classic fish and chips, some local prawns, and grilled scallops — all fresh, simple, and done right. The prawns were sweet and juicy, the scallops had a nice char, and the fish was golden and crisp without being greasy. You can tell it’s all local catch — nothing frozen or fussy. To drink, we grabbed a latte and a milkshake. The coffee was smooth and the milkshake was that perfect old-school style — cold, creamy, and nostalgic. It’s the kind of place where you can roll in straight from the sand, eat with a view, and feel like you’re on holiday even if you’re just stopping by for lunch. Casual, breezy, and very Byron.

My daughter and I were travelling home from Brisbane to Newcastle, a getaway to heal from the recent passing of my mum. We decided to stay in Byron as my mum's Birthday was the following day and she loved seafood and we wanted to celebrate the first birthday without her in a special way. Omg we weren't disappointed Fishheads was absolutely amazing!!!!! The staff were above great. The food was the best seafood we've had!!! The whole evening was beyond fantastic, so much so we went back for breakfast a day later where again the experience was amazing. It even came with a view of whale's playing in the ocean. Thank you Fishheads for a wonderful experience ❤️

1⃣️ General Store I recommend the Soba Salad from this store! It doesn't feel heavy to eat but it's delicious at the same time And the portion is huge, worth the price I like it very much, it's refreshing and not greasy after eating 💕There are a lot of surroundings in the store, you can go in and take a look! (I like their outdoor seats very comfortable, very good for taking pictures✨ 2⃣️Fishheads This is a coastal restaurant The seat we made was directly facing the sea~ We ordered 🦪Oysters 🥔Sweet potato fries with truffle sauce 🦐Seafood platter (you can choose your own seafood Mussels with garlic Fry with butter Two pieces of bread are included, you can eat with butter! We also ordered salmon, fried shrimp, and fried squid Every dish here is delicious! Finally I know why there are so many people~ Actually, Byron Bay is beautiful no matter how you take pictures📷 Friends who go to Byron Bay can go and try it! I personally recommend it because I think it’s good💕💕

The service was very nice. Waiter was thoughtful and friendly. We have got a 5 course sharing menu. It was delicious. Everything tasted like it came straight from the ocean. The best part were the salt and pepper squid 🦑. Highly recommend place.

Google
The food and ambiance were great, but my experience was marred by ordering issues. I ordered $12 fries but received a $43 linguine dish instead. Additionally, the menu listed side dishes at $14 each for four, but I was charged $22 each for two without clear explanation from the waiter. A 15% weekend surcharge pushed our lunch for two (one soft drink, one beer) to $172.11—far more than expected. Better communication about pricing and accurate order fulfillment are needed.

A sunny winter afternoon drive around Byron led us to this little gem. Great atmosphere at the takeaway side of the restaurant and seating with beautiful views in the restaurant. Our food was delicious, responsibly served in eco-friendly containers and appropriate cutlery. Download the PayStay app beforehand for a seamless parking experience too.

Exactly what you want from a Byron Bay lunch. We ordered the self-select mixed platter of grilled salmon, oysters, mussels and chat potatoes. With a decent off-the-shelf Chardonnay. Simple, fresh, and spot-on. Service was warm without being over the top, and the price was more than fair given the location. Good seafood, good wine, great vibe. Would absolutely recommend as a local dining spot!

Google
Seemed like an upscale hole in the wall and turned out to be fantastic. The grilled seafood platter was totally worth it and big portions. Happy hour oysters with 2 drinks for $35. Whaaaaaat good times.

Yelp
A very nice restaurant. The food was excellent, very tasty and filling. We were able to find a table on a Friday at lunch time with a view of the sea, excellent! The prices were expensive but then again we don't go here often.

Yelp
Great cocktails and amazing food. The view was beautiful. Good prices and friendly service!

Yelp
We got the $95 seafood platter for two and thought it was excellent food-wise. The lobster was deliciously charred, the salmon and rock fish perfectly cooked, the muscles and calamari were prepared to perfection in an amazing white wine sauce, and the crabs were meaty and juicy. I do however have to mention that I'd have to give the service and staff maybe 2.5 stars max. Our server definitely tried hard but I felt like she gave off more of a chain restaurant vibe than a casual fine-dining restaurant right on the beach. We also had an issue with two people in our group having their orders switched and upon taking a few bites and realizing the mistake, the manager seemed annoyed at us and then took the plates away while the other half of us ate our meals. We ended up taking about 20 extra minutes to eat and the females in our group had to sit and watch as we ate our seafood platters. Nice spot, mediocre staff, amazing seafood. Definitely worth a try if you find yourself in Byron Bay!

Yelp
Very disappointing and expensive. We arrived 10 minutes before lunch and were told we could sit down, but only order drinks as the kitchen was not open. Once at our table, we were ignored, and not provided with a menu. I ordered 2 drinks that took over 20 minutes to get, and then we noticed other customers were greeted taken to their table, served cold water and given a menu. We felt very left out. I ordered mussels in a white wine creamy sauce, which was discussed, it was more like milk and water and the mussels were not fresh. Total bill for 2 drinks, mussels and one linguini $102.82 including a Sunday surcharge which we were not told about. TOTAL rip-off. Never go back there or recommend it.

Yelp
I had a lovely time on my first visit, so this was only the second place I had visited twice on my three week visit to Byron. Sadly I was disappointed this time around, mostly by the service though. Food was consistently good, but somewhat let down by the service. As a result I was really unhappy at the end of my meal, given that I had spent a considerable amount of money at this establishment, I expected a bit more. A big let down.

Yelp
Food was amazing, we got the mixed grill and chips. The seafood was really fresh and the aoli on the chips was super creamy. The staff were petty efficient and we didn't wait an unreasonable amount of time for the food. We would eat there again. The atmosphere is a little bit of a let down but other than that quite nice!

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious, nice spot, and very friendly service. Although servers were very busy and forgot about one of our drinks, they definitely made up for it by being super friendly and authentic. Whilst I gave it 5 stars the first time, I'll correct to 3 stars after our 2nd visit: food was still good (entrées and fish of the day were excellent, seafood linguine looked great, but lacked taste), but service was bad and inattentive.

Yelp
Oh the competition to find the local's best fish 'n' chips! It's on and challenge accepted by yours truly. A few folks have told me to try Fishheads and so I did. Takeaway, mind you, because it wouldn't feel right to eat it outside a paper container. On a cool Friday night, the freshly prepared (read: main) served as my dinner. The simplicity of the battered fish and chips seems like it'd be easy to do well but other experiences have proven differently. Luckily, Fishheads is not one of them and certainly delivers the Fish 'n' Chips all too well. I don't even want to try the competition! Perhaps if I am back again or my stomach has enough room and space.

Yelp
Not the Fishheads of old. Service was fine, food was just average. Seafood was over cooked There are better options for seafood in Byron

Yelp
I decided I needed to drive to Byron Bay for a quick breakfast and walk around for my weekend away from studying. This place was a perfect stop for the morning. Great views, I was seated straight away inside and had a perfect view of the surf and people streaming in as it got later in the day. The bonus of this place is that there's parking if you get in early enough you have your choice of where to park. Don't forget to pay for your parking through to avoid a fine. The cafe itself had more inside seating than out, the wait staff were on ball and attentive to your needs and the food was actually rather good. The prices here are average to what you'd pay in Sydney for a breakfast. The deck is the place to be so if you can get a seat on the deck I'd suggest asking for it. Sometimes it's great to be a lone diner as I get to pick my seats at will and I can squish in anywhere! The coffee was also rather nice to drink, which can't be said about everywhere and their love of burning my soy milk. I asked for a second cup. I honestly wasn't expecting much apart from some breaky and I was pleasantly surprised by this wee gem that disguses itself as a cafe/shack that may be a bit hit and miss. Definiately not a miss and well worth a stop in if you can get a seat!

Yelp
Unmotivated staff with no personality. I came here for a quick meal and an hour planned out to sit down and eat, but no this was not the case. I had Knat's buzzing around me and my food, which was very unpleasant. I do want to add she came back with my beer consistently. Hence the two stars. DO NOT RECOMMEND. CHEERS!

Yelp
Best location in Australia. Absolutely fresh seafood and friendly staff. The seafood Royale breakfast highly recommended. Good coffee as well. If in Byron Bay a must try place.

Yelp
In 2004 I vowed never to return, well its 2014, arrived 7.15am for a coffee, told by staff does not open to 7.30am could not sit in cafe area, staff reading paper, doof doof ghetto music blaring, several people wanted to go in and sit but no, lets all wait out in rain and cold....Glad to see all others walked off, staff still read local paper and music was a turn off anyhow. No common sense, no idea on service, no idea on customer relations building. Good luck. Byron Fresh down the road has nailed it A1 Service.

Yelp
Battered fish and chips here reminds me of England, and that is not a bad thing. If you are holidaying in Byron, grabbing a bag of fish and chips and heading to the beach is an essential lunch experience. Knot a handkerchief on top of your head for the full experience. If you live in Byron (and are not veggie) you already know how good the fish and chips here are, so why are you wasting time reading this review?

Yelp
We waited 20 minutes for a table, and about 45 minutes for our food. Service was fine. Food was pricey and portions were small. My bf ordered the big brekky, which is listed as being served with mushrooms, and he literally had a fraction of said mushroom(s) on his plate. He had to 'ration' it. The plate his brekky was served on was huge, but the portion was average. I had the eggs benny with salmon (so predictable, I know) and I was wishing it came with a little salad. It needed a little something else. It's nice and airy, and I may try it again, but in the off-season.

Yelp
Worst fish place I have been so far. The terrace is right on the parking. I am not even sure that the oyster were fresh. The worst was the sole, which was dramatically overcooked. They offered desert to compensate but it was so bad that we could not eat it entierely. It is also really expensive (the sole was $38, price I would be willing to pay for a delicious fresh fish). I would definitely avoid that place.

Yelp
We went to Fishheads for breakfast. It was relatively empty. Maybe three other tables. We were ready to order when two large groups arrived. Despite making eye contact with the waiter on many occasions we were completely ignored. The waiter then took orders from the two large groups first. Appalling service. I would not recommend to anyone. The food may have been good but we would not know as we left very disappointed.

Yelp
If you're searching for some fresh, mouth-watering, tasty seafood, Fishheads is the place to go! Definitely try out their Oyster shot, with vodka, tomato juice, and an oyster finished off with a lime wedge. Never tried anything like it. As a traveler on a budget, I opted for simple side of potato fries, which was a great choice for $7 since it ended up being plenty of food. The garlic aioli to dip the fries was awesomely thick and flavourful, too. My friends and I came here as a final dinner for one of our traveling companions, and some of them splurged on more expensive dishes like the seafood pasta. Mussels, prawns, pasta, umm yes please! We saw a couple order the pricey lobster platter, what a crazy delicious looking meal. The service was fantastic in my experience, and when I ate all the garlic aoli, and still had fries left, the waitress brought me tomato sauce at no extra cost. Sometimes, places would charge for this, so I was grateful. The seating out on the porch overlooks the ocean, and at night offers a warm outdoor atmosphere. Absolutely pleasant! Also, who doesn't love BYO?! Stop over at the bottle shop before your dinner out, enjoy your amazing meal, in the company of wonderful people, and you will have very fond memories of Fishheads.

Yelp
We treated my daughter & partner from Melbourne to celebrate a birthday at Fishheads last night . The service was poor and we waited over an hour for our mains . The coconut rice which accompanies the sole was undercooked and crunchy. Rice returned to kitchen and reappeared at end of meal - not great when you are paying $35. The manager did deduct the cost of one main at my request , but not going back there . Very disappointing as a local who has supported Fishheads on many occasions

Yelp
Food to me is like sex! Well there's no way I'm going back. Ask any of my friends about me and food. It's true i love my ×. Waitress was great, but the cook can go work at the local Takeaway. Regards Martin.

Yelp
Really expensive for what you get... average fish n chips, average service and dreary atmosphere. Staff were friendly but pretty unmotivated.

Yelp
Fantastic prawn and lobster omelette. Good service and fantastic beach location. The coffee is also great.

Yelp
Yep, this is officially my favourite place in Byron !! Whats there not to love about this place? Talk about prime real estate - right by the beach. And what a buzz this place gives off. The food here is incredible - just ask my friend who now compares salt and pepper squid to Fishheads S&P squid (she has yet to find a place in Sydney that can top this place). I suppose what separates a meh restaurant with a great restaurant is the coming together of many things - the vibe, the food, the service and of course the company .. and boy did it all come together. A very memorable lunch !!

Moni K.

Yelp
Service was very slow. The seafood was extremely over cooked and tasted horrible. The food was way over priced for the amount you received and the quality. Elements of the dish were missing which induced the taste of burnt seafood.

Yelp
This place is casual chic, almost at its best. The seafood is fresh and innovative, while the service is friendly and attentive. The garlic, lemon cob bread is an excellent start and the Bloody Mary oyster shots aren't bad either. The mixed grill lobster is sweet and the squid is tender. Next time I'd try the Portuguese seafood stew instead though. The sweet stickiness of the did and pecan pudding was a nice touch to finish.

Yelp
I was a veggie since 14 but in Oz the veggie food was lacking a little in villages and small towns. So fish was eaten and this was the first time I enjoyed it, rather than it being a necessity! All I can say is yum; fantastic! I also learned the difference between Aussies and Kiwis by 'fush n chups' - an essential life lesson and i\ve rarely got it wrong since!

Deb W.

Yelp
The food here is pretty good. The problem is the very slow service. There is an automatic 15% gratuity tacked onto your bill and so there's no incentive for the servers to provide better service. We waited at least 15 minutes after we were seated before the sever took our drink order. We received our appetizers about 15 minutes after that which was ok. Then waited another 45 minutes before our main courses arrived. During that time our server seemed to disappear. We noted that people seated after us were receiving their main courses before we did. When we inquired about our food, a different server checked for us and said the food was coming but that the kitchen was "slow" today. 15 minutes later, our food arrived. So overall, it took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our main courses of salmon tartare, mixed grill plate and fish and chips. Slow, inattentive service with ok food. So not worth the wait. Definitely won't be coming back here.

Yelp
Went for lunch on Friday 11th March 2016 as I was on holidays visiting my friend who lives in Byron Bay. We sat down & ordered lunch & we're enjoying a few beverages. Our entree of the fish quesadilla arrived - it was pretty ordinary & this is where the fun started. Whilst eating our entree, the service staff tried to deliver a plate of oysters we had not ordered. We advised we hadn't ordered this 3 times as they kept bringing it back to us. The last waitress then told us we had ordered it, but that she would do us a favour & not charge us for it. To say she was rude & had attitude was an understatement! The next time she came over we asked her politely, if it would be OK if another waitress served us for the rest of the meal. Shortly after a waitress arrived & asked us to leave the restaurant. To say we were flabbergasted is an understatement. A forty year old finance broker & local paramedic of a similar vintage asked to leave a restaurant because we had sent back food we never ordered & asked for the rude waitress to not attend us. We asked to speak to the manager, who would not come & see us. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The waiting staff looked about 18-22 & had a terrible attitude with no customer service. The food we had for entree was average & I would give this place a wide berth! If you want good fish to eat in Byron Bay try Targa or Byron at Byron where I stayed. The service & food there was impeccable!

Yelp
They served us grilled fish that was undercooked, rubbery and still pink in the center. Stay away!
