Rural Pub Food Is the Future of Irish Cuisine

"In the village of Downings, County Donegal, The Harbour Bar is a traditional pub known for Guinness with an ocean view. A little building at the side of the pub is now home to Fisk, a cozy restaurant serving more of Donegal’s incredible seafood. In addition to cooking for its own customers, Fisk also serves those at the Harbour Bar, expanding their covers per night. This also keeps butts in bar stools once hunger strikes; why go anywhere when crispy oysters, mackerel paté, and big bowls of local mussels with ‘nduja and fennel can be brought right to you? It’s a win/win for both businesses, local fishermen, and bar patrons." - Jessica Colley Clarke

I had the pleasure of dining at Fisk in Downings and it was truly a delightful experience from start to finish. Upon our arrival, we were fortunate to secure a table immediately. Our group ordered a variety of dishes including four fish tacos (two with regular sauce and two without sauce), two prawn bao buns, the flavorful Gambas, crispy battered cod pieces with skinny fries for the little one and the prawn dumplings (3 pieces). The food at Fisk was nothing short of exceptional, with each dish seasoned to perfection and ingredients bursting with flavors. We were thoroughly impressed and couldn't find a single fault in any of our meals. The staff further elevated our dining experience with their warm and friendly service, going above and beyond to recommend their best-selling dishes when we had trouble deciding. Our memorable meal at Fisk came to around 75 euros, a fair price considering the quality of the food and service we received. Fisk is truly a gem not to be missed in Downings, offering a perfect combination of delectable seafood, impeccable service, and a welcoming atmosphere. This dining experience will stay with us for a long time, and we look forward to returning to Fisk in the future.

Chef Tony makes some of the best fish dishes I have ever tasted and Sean was an excellent host. We will definitely be coming back here. Top notch and worth queuing up for.

Fisk is so awesome, has a great sense of food and is connected basically to the pub next door, and the food is great along with the service, go here!!

Tiny little spot attached to The Harbour Bar. Drove out from Letterkenny for lunch & there was already a small queue before they opened. There’s only five tables inside, but food can be eaten outside, and I also believe it can be brought into the bar. We ordered three oysters, one fish taco, and the mussels. Oysters we’re some of the best I’ve ever had, served with a chili granita. So creamy and no grittiness. My dad was tempted by the prawn bao, but opted for the fish taco, & said it was a winner. Perfectly cooked battered fish, slaw, spicy mayo & pico de gallo. Mussels came in a tomatoey sauce, along with a portion of perfect chips. Unfortunately I was only allowed a small sample before dad reminded me that it was his lunch, not mine. Only wine is served in Fisk, but soft drinks, beer etc can be bought in the bar and brought in. One americano to finish, and our bill came to €28.00. Staff were all absolutely lovely and despite how busy it was, service was prompt and efficient. An absolutely fab spot, and one I hope to go back to soon.

Lovely freshly prepared food cooked in the front of you. Restaurant always busy and bar next door very traditional. I had the fishcake and then the haddock and chips both where beautifully cooked and seasoned very well. Staff very pleasant and competitivly priced food really was a treat to visit and will be back, recommend anyone to visit may have to wait for a table but really is worth it for the food.
