Yelp
I visited Fiskekompaniet with my parents and husband at the recommendation of our whale watching guide, Leonardo, and I'm so glad we took his advice! I've been in a review-writing rut for a while now, and this is the first restaurant in a long time that made me excited to write my review!
Absolutely everything we ate (and we ate a lot), was completely perfect. All the flavors were balanced and delicious, the textures were lovely, and the combinations and creativity were exciting and also made for some eye candy before digging in. The staff was very informative and professional (the translation to the English language and American culture brought about some awkwardness for us, but this was the only mark on our experience, and I'd never hold it against the restaurant).
We stopped in for dinner, without a reservation, December 6, 2016. After checking the reservation list, the waiter/host let us know he did have a table for 4 available, but only until 8pm. Since we don't spend all evening at a restaurant like your usual Norwegian guest, we were totally fine with this arrangement, especially since it was just 5:30pm when we arrived.
All of us had water (my mom had sparkling water), and we had some appetizers, starters, all of us had entrees, and then some desserts and coffee.
APPETIZERS/STARTERS
Raw oysters - I'm a fan of lower salinity oysters, and even though our server told us these were high salinity, I found them to have a lower salt content. I loved our oysters and could have eaten them all day! They were from France, and the oysters are kept in a tank near the front of the restaurant live and fresh in Arctic Sea water from the fjord. The oysters are served with lemon and a vinaigrette.
Fish soup - My dad got this for himself, but I got to taste it. It said "it was very good in its own way, but I think I like the fish soups in (my) town better. I don't know that it as worth the money." I however, really liked it. The broth felt and tasted very buttery and creamy. I remember there was cod, a fish cake of sorts, and I think some salmon in it. (I really want to learn how to make this dish at home, it's so cozy and tasty!)
Smoked salmon - The salmon is smoked while set on a block of ice, which means that it stays moist and is brought out room temperature. The flavor was excellent, the texture was lovely. It's served over salmon roe with some pickled onions and beets sliced thin. No bagels or crackers here, which allows the salmon to have the stage all to its own.
ENTREES
Catch of the day (cod) - My mother had this for her entree. "It was really tasty, and it was cooked really well. It was moist and tender and not dried out. It was crispy in the right places and very good. I enjoyed eating it" I got to taste the lobster sauce that it was served with, which was very nice.
Baked cod - Dad and I both got this dish, and I loved mine! Topped with crispy cod skin with pureed beets and pureed potato/turnip/I-can't-remember and beets on the side. I loved getting to have a different mix of flavors all on one plate. The texture of the cod was just right.
Reindeer steak - My husband ordered this, and while waiting for his food to come out, he realized that he didn't have the opportunity to ask for the steak to be cooked medium rare. He was worried that his steak would be cooked to much and that it would be tough, but it came out just right. Our parents (who've lived in Norway for 1.5 years) explained to us that the waiters in restaurants don't ask how you like your steak/burger cooked; the chefs typically cook them all around medium or so. My husband liked his food all right (he ate all of it), and I liked my tasting bite okay. I'm really glad I got the entree that I got.
DESSERTS
White chocolate cheesecake - My husband and I split this, and I kind of wish we'd each gotten our own. The cheesecake had a lighter flavor than I expected; it wasn't very rich. I liked having my bites with the orange jam/puree, and my husband liked his with the dark chocolate ice cream it was served with.
Sticky pudding - I didn't taste this, but my dad said, "It was very tasty. I don't really remember anything else..."
Cloudberry something - I loved my bite of my mom's dessert "I'd been wanting to try cloudberry desserts for a long time. It was very yummy and fresh tasting and very light."
Coffee - Norwegians get coffee. Flavorful, sour, and nuanced. A great finish to a lovely dinner.

I sneaked a peek at our bill, and after translating to USD, I realized that dinner for the four of us was over $500! All of us really liked our food, and my mom and I thoroughly enjoyed the fanfare and fanciness of the atmosphere and occasion. It's hard to recommend something so expensive, but I know that great food costs money. Also, I know that the exchange rates and Norwegian cost of living factors in a huge deal anyway. All in all, I'd say go to Fiskekompaniet if you have the chance!
