On the Grid : Fitler Square Park

"Fitler Square Park is small in relation to nearby Rittenhouse, but this little parcel of land is a great place to enjoy some lunch or soak in some afternoon sun. The farmers market every Saturday is a big plus too." - J2 Design

Quaint neighborhood park. Perfect for letting the kids release some energy, and peaceful enough for you to relax! #lEtsreAlesTate

Love this playground, I visit often. It’s very relaxing and fun.

Relaxing place to sit, people-watch, or just walk through while you're in this beautiful part of Philadelphia.

Fitler Square, a charming neighborhood park in Philadelphia, is a half-acre haven of tranquility and natural beauty. Bounded by 23rd Street on the east, 24th Street on the west, Panama Street on the north, and Pine Street on the south, it’s a picturesque spot that offers a respite from the urban hustle. Named after the late 19th-century Philadelphia mayor Edwin Henry Fitler, the square is a testament to the city’s dedication to public spaces. With its well-maintained paths, seasonal flower beds, and a central fountain, Fitler Square is not just a park but a community gathering place that reflects the historic character of its surrounding neighborhood.

This is a lovely park! However, NOT AT ALL DOG FRIENDLY!!! Many signs directing people to keep dogs "off the grass for the health and safety of children." Should you ignore the signs, one of the many parents playing with their kids will tell you to "take your dog to the dog park a few blocks away." I've lived in the neighborhood for 14 years, with my dog(s), don't bother doing anything with your dog but sitting quietly on a bench or strolling through, no one minds either of those. Again, lovely place, just not for your dog to romp.

Neighborhood park with several sculptures, benches and small garden areas. Everything is fenced in, and it's not too dog friendly. There is a dog park just a few blocks away. Our favorite part was the turtles sculpture.

Definitely for locals only, beware if you live even 1 block below South St. The square patrons, a smattering of the city's most superficial bourgeoisie will let you know you definitely do NOT belong.

Beautiful little park, good place to bring your littles for some grass action. Only wish people walking through here would respect the no dogs.

Yelp
It's always a lovely day in filter Square. A charming spot to wander, or spread out with your kids while they climb on the turtle, bear or ram statues. The gardens are beautifully maintained, and the grounds are clean. A perfect, serene park.

Yelp
Cute little park that's a relatively short walk from Rittenhouse, but it feels a world away. Fitler Square is smaller and not nearly as crowded, even though it still is lively. There are numerous benches that are spaced out around the park. It's a good place to go after grabbing a pastry and coffee if you want to have a socially distanced chat with a friend. People also tend to put down blankets and picnic. Lots of kids and dogs walking through (though there are some areas labeled as pet-free grass). Fitler Square has a charming, neighborhood feel. Definitely worth stopping here to enjoy the world for a little while.

Yelp
It's definitely not as well known as the other Squares in Philadelphia, but it's still pretty serene for a park that's more brick than green. and it has a pretty good old fashioned feel to it. Don't drink the water from the drinking fountain because it isn't very thirst quenching. But do kick back on one of it's many park benches and enjoy the various animal sculptures that the park has to offer. The turtles are my favorite. Filter Square also has a timeless fountain at the center. and a cool Spring Festival coming up on Mother's Day weekend.

Yelp
Beloved square with a strong neighborhood community that takes excellent care of it! Spring & Fall fairs, Santa visits, Easter egg hunts, community gardening for maintnence, holiday decorations.. a well loved park! Eric Berg's beautiful bronze sculptures are dotted throughout the park, the turtles, bear and ram. Lovely gated fountain in the center of the park. I have fond memories of my kids playing on the turtles as toddlers on weekends, and with Trinity playgroup during the week days. FS has a Saturday farmers market with tents, I often stroll through with my dog and pick up cider donuts from Highland Orchards. Fitler square also has some great sprawling grass, perfect for a picnic, and lots of cast iron benches. Charming park, a gem of Philly!

Yelp
What a welcome green space in Center City. Fitler square has a cute little fountain, shady trees and lots of cute coffee bars and places to explore nearby. Love this area.

Yelp
Very nice, somewhat hidden. Or better yet, not as well known park. There's plenty of shade and nice statues throughout the park. The benches looked like they were new and they were very comfortable. I also like the placement of the benches, as for they were spaced out enough so you can have a little privacy. This park is unbelievably quiet and in my opinion, though there's plenty of room for kids to run around, this park seems best for couples or anyone seeking alone time to just get away, read a book, or have lunch. Surrounding the park are rustic/ quaint homes and shoppes that really add to the pleasantness of the park. My only complaint is that the fountain had no water in it, the plants around it were overgrown, and there was a huge fence around it that prevented you from getting close.

Yelp
Rittenhouse Square? Too crowded, too expected. Washington Square? Too far, not enough character. Fitler Square? Juuuuust right! This unassuming little park just across from Dmitri's charmed me when I first discovered it a year or so ago, and it has remained my favorite in Philly. It's well-maintained, with a few cute animal statues, brick walkways and lots of soft green grass for picnicking. The park is never overcrowded, and there is always a bench available, even on weekends. What a perfect oasis near my home!

Yelp
Just as this summer started, I was running past Fitler Square one evening, and a bunch of fireflies twinkled as I passed by. In the middle of the city! Lovely. This is Rittenhouse's smaller, less crowded brother.

Yelp
i almost got arrested for peeing in the grass here. Damn. I gotta stop acting like a 2 year old. Nice pile of park. I like it. I used to come here and talk to my girlfriend when she wasn't my girlfriend.

Yelp
I love Fitler Square. I don't get there as often as I would like but when I need a park to chill in it's the first place I think of. The convenience and smaller size of the park rivals that of other parks in the area and it's easier to find a quiet spot to relax than some of its competitors. The only downside is that it often acts as the community yard for the families living on the adjacent streets so you may have to contend with a number of families in the afternoons. However, that being said, I have never failed to find a quiet spot and my dog is always happy to people watch.

Yelp
Nice local park - good for kids, picnic's with friends, and walking your dog (as long as the grumpy gardener isn't around) ;-)

Yelp
I love Fitler Square. I want to live on Fitler Square. I also want many other things I can't afford, but in the meantime I can walk through this adorable little park and enjoy the shining sun and singing birds. Children run around and play while guardians watch and chat with one another, and others walk their dogs on the paths at a leisurely pace. There's a cute little fountain in the center, and benches where one can sit, read or enjoy a drink, and day dream about calling this beautiful little park your "yard."

Yelp
Cute little park. I'm pretty much a 5 star parker, unless it's full o' poo. Give me a tree, a leaf, a lil grass and I'm a happy filly.

Yelp
A really nice clean park, with the added bonus of being right next door to Dmitri's. You can get take out from there, and then eat it under the stars out in the open, when you don't want to sit in the restaurant. There is only one weird experience I have had the many times I've visited this park: lots of couples come here to talk it out. I always see intense conversations and lots of tears. It's happened more than once, and I've happened to do it myself, ha! It is a great place to study, or read a book, however.... nice and quiet - but the cute kids and crying couples can be a little distracting....but, sometimes the park is so peaceful, you can't get any reading in because you want to take a nap.

Yelp
If you like trees and metel goats and turtlus THAN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU!!! I go here all the time with my friend Brian and wee like to see watch people sitting and reading and sometimes bathing with bottles of water and newspaprs. The one thing I dont lik about this place is that at night if your being loud the naybors yell at you and that makes Brian upset.

Yelp
Little local park . Great for kiddies and doggies to play, big kids to picnic. The gardener is unpleasant, but dont let her ruin your good time. Nice produce market on the weekends . A nice place to enjoy the day.

Yelp
My favorite lesser known park in Philly. It's a bit out of the way and almost always a very pleasant surprise when I find it without consulting a map. I absolutely love the neighborhood it's tucked into and often wish I lived there. The fountain is beautiful and peaceful. Or at least it's peaceful if you're there at the right time of day when the kids are done playing. Show up here without a kid at the wrong time, and you'll definitely feel out of place though.

Yelp
So between Rittenhouse Square, Schuylkill River Park, and Fitler, Fitler probably comes in 3rd, but that doesn't mean it's not nice. It's just a lot smaller and it seems to be a little loud for my taste with lots of loud kids. It's still a great little gift of nature in the middle of the city and it's worth a stop by.

Roy G.

Yelp
Really cute and quaint park. Nice view of Philly skyline. Lots of babies in really nice strollers around :)

Eric F.

Yelp
What a great place to hang out, bring families, and kids. Older kids have a great place to play at Schuylkill River Park. Parents bring their younger ones to Fitler Square. A few years ago they hired a gardener to take care of the place and it has really been spruced up. I see in a recent newsletter that Councilman Kenyatta Johnson is providing city funds to replace the ailing benches they have at present. I can't wait. I love this place and love that it's in my neighborhood.
