12 of the Best Hikes in South America

"A final, dramatic summit hike reached after traversing northern Patagonian landscapes along the Carretera Austral, passing through biodiverse national parks that showcase glaciers, fjords, wild rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. The route offers high chances of spotting wildlife such as endangered huemul deer, pumas, and condors, and culminates with a cross-border approach onto the Argentine side for a strenuous ascent to a famed granite peak amid rugged mountain scenery." - Michaela Trimble Michaela Trimble Michaela Trimble is a journalist and photographer based in Mexico City. 25 Best Hikes in the World

"A challenging roughly 15-mile trail in Los Glaciares National Park that does not summit the peak but rewards hikers with spectacular views of the glacier-covered mountain and the turquoise Laguna de los Tres below. The route provides dramatic Patagonian scenery and photographic vistas rather than a technical climb to the summit." - Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis Carrie Dennis is a New York City-based writer and editor with more than a decade of content strategy experience. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to! The walk is nice and nature awesome! The last km is a bit hard 😱 but reaching the lake and watching just in front of the Fitz Roy (El Chalten) is awesome! Worthy! Great! I’ve been day on a Christmas Day! What a gift!

If you’re not fit, you’ll struggle. I did it while suffering from plantar fasciitis and it was a terrible idea. Took a cab (40,000 pesos 🤦🏻‍♀️) to Rio Electrico as it’s supposed to save you some walking. Don’t fall for it. I walked 29km in total which is more than what most people do following the usual trail and spent all that money on the cab too. But if you insist on starting at Rio Electrico, then wait at the car park at the bottom of the trail and hitch a ride. While the view is pretty like any mountain and laguna is bound to be, if you’re a world traveler, you’ll have seen some more beautiful ones. Do it as a personal achievement if you’d like to say you’ve conquered Fitz Roy. But if it’s for the view or a photo, save yourself the struggle. You can access beautiful views at a much lower altitude (Laguna Capri is one). Just my personal opinion. Walking poles and a face mask will come in handy as you’ll breathe in a lot of dirt. The winds are high even in good weather.

The trek from El Chalten to Fitz Roy was not easy at first. However, the clear waters of Lake Capri, the flawless blue sky, and the majestic peaks that we encountered after struggling to climb gave us an indescribable sense of emotion.

The view is really nice at the end of the trek. I recommend you to come for the sunrise, the colors of the sunrise reflect on the Fitz Roy which makes the moment magical The Fitz Roy mountain range is the one featured on the Patagonia brand logo!

The magic must seat mountain outside of El Chaten! The first stop on a multi day hiking & backpacking expedition with Photopills, we hiked to viewpoints just below the peak and then around to the backside and Cerro Torre. Amazing area

Long hike up to 24-25km return, with awesome view. Definitely a challenging hike up at the last stretch, with strong cold wind with snows at times.

Wow. It’s drop your jaw gorgeous. Highly recommend you start early before the 7am busses arrive. It’s worth it not only for the way up, but more importantly on the way back down the narrow path passing all those people.
