We came to Five Sails to celebrate my wife's birthday and the food and service was impeccable, especially given our particular request. We had asked to meet Chef Alex during our visit, having rooted for him on Top Chef Canada. He was away when we came but the restaurant made up for it by giving us one of the best dining experiences we've ever had in our 15 years together, which we really value as we like to travel and try out restaurants a lot.
First, the food was amazing. My wife and I are prone to becoming full very quickly, but we went through an amuse bouche with bread service, appetizer, main course, and three desserts feeling very comfortable and not bloated. Everything tasted amazing with really nice textures too. Bread was buttery and fluffy, proteins were tender and tasty, and desserts were so light and balanced. I think our only criticism was the taste from the filet mignon tartare came more from the crostini than from the meat.
What tied everything together was the customer service. We were served by William and felt like we were treated like VIP. We agreed that even some Michelin-starred restaurants we've been to didn't give us service this professional. The chef that evening met with us and treated us to a delicious bite on top of our order. The assistant manager also checked in with us a few times over the course of the evening, helped pull our chairs every time we had to take a quick break, gave a complimentary birthday dessert to my wife, and helped us take pictures. We overheard a bit of conversation from the table behind us and think they noticed the service we were getting and was asking the staff about it. We were probably lucky though as it wasn't busy when we were there and staff had capacity.
This very quickly became our favourite restaurant in Vancouver. We can't wait to come back.
