Beautiful Church, well kept and maintained. Being of partial Portuguese descent. I take great pride in anything good that is Portuguese.

Magnificent church, with the feelings of peace and happiness and good health. My grand daughter and my wife and I attended a Saturday evening mass; after the mass my grand daughter wanted to see the statue of Blessed Mary. At the church she stayed and prayed. Afterwords we asked what did she pray for? She replied she would like to have a baby brother. She was only 3 then, Two years later, she has a baby brother. Her wishes were fulfilled. It is a church worth visiting to pray.

My husband's grandmother was a parishioner of this church most of her 100.5 years she graced this earth. She passed in the time of COVID, requiring a change to our traditional Catholic services. The church handled her services BEAUTIFULLY. Father spoke of such joy and how her many years gives us examples of Gods love and why we are here. We left with love and joy in our hearts saying "for now" to our grandmother until we can be united again. Thank you for giving my husband light in his hurting during this loss. He has spoken many times since how much better he felt after listen to her service. I was very impressed with Father Tony, he is doing the work our Father put him here to do.

A beautiful Catholic Church. It is a very popular selection for weddings and baptisms. It has a European architecture with high ceilings. It has good numbers of parking spaces.

Yelp
Beautiful church. Beautiful architecture! Solemn bilingual mass. Been here twice for the saturday 9am bilingual (english and portuguese mass) and I just love it here. Happy that this is super close to where my daughter's home so I can visit and hear mass. Parking is available at the back.

Yelp
Kinda random.... My review doesn't reflect the Church itself rather a date night out about 10 years ago. I had met a woman online and we met up and danced here. We were the only young people here dancing that night. It was so much fun to go on my first blind date. I think it had to do with a post bingo night party or something, it was so interesting to be in the company of soo many older people. I got the biggest kick out it. I'd like to come back post covid and check things out. I am pretty sure it will be so amazing! Enso forever. Parking. Friendly locals. 101 freeway. _Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.  Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 2021/yelp15

Yelp
Such a beautiful church! A French friend not going back to Europe this holiday season asked me if I knew where to go for a traditional Catholic Midnight Mass. I did some research and also a colleague suggested this one, located on the East side of San Jose. No matter the rainy night of this Christmas Eve, the experience was awesome. We could find parking easily (tons of it) and the lights of the super white church accentuated the beauty of those vitrals (so many of them, so pretty). We were very welcomed and wanted to have the full experience of a mixed mass in Portuguese and English (I speak the language so I could follow the story while by French friend was adoring the ornaments with her eyes. We sang, smiled, had fun on the way (the priest was very cool) and was pleased to see a full church that reminded me similar nights in Spain. A thing that was kind of strange for us is the custom of kissing the baby Jesus (of course, not mandatory). We had never done that and was kind of funny to have that as an option (we opted for not do it, after all is like kissing a doll, not a real baby), but glad to see that there are different customs out there and this catholic classic looking historical church in San Jose is so well curated.

Yelp
This is our first stop for our 2014 Visita Iglesia. On the morn of Good Friday the church was closed so it was kinda disappointing. However regardless of the situation we came and did what we have to do, recite 2 Stations of the Cross outside its closed doors. I gave 3 stars because of the cleanliness of the place and the surrounding roses which are very pretty. The structure of the church is also impressive. Next time I come, I hope it's open so I can give a more detailed description inside the church.

Yelp
Five Wounds is a Catholic Church located in Downtown San Jose. Although I t is known as a Portuguese parish, they do have multiple masses celebrated in English! It's an old church with a cathedral like structure! It has very ornate decorations at and near the altar! They are currently building structures to accommodate the growing Cristina Rey Jesuit high school that is located on the church property! The once sizable parking lot has been reduced in size to help with the expansion of the high school! So the parking lot gets filled rather quickly now!

Yelp
This is by far the most beautiful Catholic church in San Jose. Also, one of the oldest church which was built around the 1930s. I like the architect and design of the church. This church is not my go to masses because of the location, so I don't know much about the experience. I mostly come here for funerals or weddings. This church is full of happy and sad memories that I will always remember.

Yelp
the gregorian latin holy mass starts at 5:30 afternoon every sundays. . its free parking just behind the church. i lived in fremont, california and i drive my smartcar to five wounds church like 15 minutes one way drive. this holy church was designed and built in as the shape of the cross of christ, which represents believers by faith to the savior. . this church is well ornated with gold paint, rich colors, medieval fabrics woods. glass, lights, candles, etc. as you stare at the center of the holy altar, the dying savior jesus hanged on his cross as a death penalty. then there's mary of nazareth, mother of christ who offered her mother love to her savior and child. , then there is 2nd woman, . i was very touched by the statue of mary magdalene at the cross of the altar she is kneeling while she adore his savior. then there's a 3rd statue, a youngest apostle man name john of zebedee who looks of love but felt like an orphan already. . three believers, worshippers, three souls, three witnesses at this altar: namely: mary of joachim of the city nazareth), mary of theophilus of the city of magdala ), john zebedee of the city of galilee) all these 3 witnesses are all galileans. wow. if you travel holy land the country israel , be sure to visit galilee. check out the 4 gospels of matthew , mark, luke , john on the online website - www.biblegateway.com

Yelp
I have been attending this church since I was 9 years old. It is like being home for me. All my friends from school attend and I love to get to reunite with them there. It is such a blessing to have such a beautiful church so close by. I can remember such good memories there having my confirmation and being apart of the Holy Ghost and being in the parade.

Yelp
First, this is a beautiful Church. I wish that they didn't have such a horrible table altar and could instead just rightfully use the high altar. I'm very happy the parish has the Traditional Latin Mass here but I wish it was more at the center of the parish and not merely relegated to the side altar. If the parish would just return to how Mass would have been said in my grandfathers' time, I'd welcome that with exceeding joy!

Yelp
You know a Catholic Church is legit when the moment you walk in there is NO blank space on the wall. Came here for mass today after finding out that my regular church St. Victor's doesn't have a 5pm mass during Summer. Let me tell you, I was blown away at the amount of architecture, colors, and use of space. This is no doubt a traditional catholic church as there are hundreds of statues of various saints, Jesus in different poses, stained glass windows, and other rather interesting designs. In terms of general atmosphere I would say that this church is on par with St. Joseph's Cathedral in Downtown San Jose. In terms of their structure (which is traditional) and how they run mass, its comparable to Our Lady of Peace (super strict and traditional church, see my review.) The way how they run mass here matches the traditional atmosphere of the church. This means all boy alter servers, extra politeness on the altar, etc... Being a former altar boy at Our Lady of Peace, I respect this church's decision to have all boys as alter servers. Anyway, if you're a fan of Our Lady of Peace, chances are you'll love this church. Things are kept reverent and aren't as liberal as many other church's in san jose. In terms of the community, its a shame that this church has a fairly small one. I think it deserves more credit in the san jose community. The parking is abundant as there is a parking lot in the back. This church apparently is never full so finding a space is never a problem. Anyway, if you're looking for a conservative place to pray, come here! I can't think of a reason to not give this church a perfect score and I'm sure you won't either. Anything lackluster at this church the wonderful decor will surely make up for it. Definitely stop by! After all, you need to repent after doing some questionable activity around this neighborhood ;]

Yelp
One of my favorite church to attend. The parking lot is spacious, so parking is not an issue. The church is really nice and it is not crowded at all during the weekend English mass.

Yelp
I am so glad that I found this church. I been looking to attend a new location for Latin Mass. Couldn't ask for such beautiful service. Starts at 1230pm. You do wear veils or hats. I love seeing the little girls with the veil. Toward the end of this year 2019 I was looking to expand my faith. This is what I needed. Also please read about the importance of wearing a veil. Beautiful church.

Yelp
The people in the office of this church are not very friendly... I was quite disappointed that the people were rude & nasty! I mean c'mon you work at a church. U can be a little more pleasant to the other people of the community not just your own people!!! Zero stars if U ask ME.

Yelp
This is my favorite church. The priest's sermons are sooo good and applicable to everyday life. He made a reference to one of my favorite tv shows (Nurse Jackie) and said "The best healers are broken people." I always am awed by his messages. Last Sunday his sermon was about failure, "Failure is not the end, it is just part of the story." He weaves allegory with parable and Jesus' teachings. I look forward to coming to mass every Sunday and the choir is AMAZING and the church is so beautiful. I literally feel like I'm in Rome. This church has rekindled my relationship with my faith and I am so thankful I found it :)

Yelp
My previous boss got married in this church in 7-7-7 and my boyfriend and i fell in love of how beautiful this church is. So now that we are getting married, we decided to get married here. The only negative i can say is that they do charge a lot but to us its worth it. I also have to say that Ms. Anna Maria (Church Assistant) and Ms. Marry Vargas (church Wedding Coordinator) are both very nice and friendly. I do recommend this church to every bride out there who dreamed of a fairytale kind of wedding =)

Yelp
I attend Latin High Mass here at 915am as often as I can. This gem of a church provides the most perfect setting for the Holy Sacrifice: Pipe organ, Gregorian chant, gorgeous high altar for ad orientem, gratuitous incense, etc. They make sure they do the Traditional Latin Mass right. Fr. Moreau, ICRSS, is the presider for this Mass. You can tell that he genuinely loves doing what he's doing and provides meaningful homilies. If you've never experienced the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, I strongly encourage you to worship at least once in your life in this format :) Unfortunately this day and age, the Mass has seemingly turned more into a fraternal, community meal rather than the re-presentation of the Sacrifice and Offering that healed the world of its sin. The sacrifice of our Lord, re-presentation of Calvary and its received graces are made especially evident in this Mass. A total breath of fresh air!

Yelp
My Ratings: Quality: 5 - Location: 5 - Beautiful! Parking: 5 - Lots of parking Service: 5 - Good service, great choir Speed: 5 - Always on time Overall: This church is well maintained, beautiful and very solemn. I love it! My Opinion/Story: Since we moved near the area, we've been going to their 5:30p Sunday mass. The choir is nice and not messy like other bigger choir. They sing simple nice songs. The mass is always on time, parking is always available, and the sermon is good. The church is beautiful and you can see how they care for it. I can see how other people would choose this church for their wedding because you don't need to decorate anymore.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful church...very European! LOL...my only dislike are the statues...they freak me out...i think it is because they are human size!

Yelp
I love 5 Wounds! This is where I can hear the "Mass of The Ages" in a sacred space built to worship in beauty....

Yelp
I Booked this church in June 2009 for my wedding May 2010, i love this church but it only has 1 English mass on Sunday. I fell in love with this church when my Fiance and I were looking for a church to go to and to get married in. We don't even really need decor for the church because It REALLY DOESN'T NEED IT! We paid $900 to book the church and we got our own priest to service the mass for us. I love it!!! the only thing also is that parking is in the back and if we had a limo to drop us off i think there is a red zone in front of the church... I think not sure.... but I still love it and even more because it has the old church bells that ring after masses

Yelp
This church is absolutely gorgeous. While it looks traditional, the priest's homilies are very modern and reflect the needs of our society. The music ministry is also very good - the youth who do it also have a CD out available for purchase. Yes, they have the traditional, uncomfy pews, but the mass is so well done, you'll completely forget about the wooden pews. They also have a marvelous parish festival with plenty of multi-cultural food, alcohol, games and amusement park rides.

Yelp
Very beautiful church. When they have a event this location is crowded. A lot of love.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! I am extremely surprised that the priest and his staff can be so judgmental toward people who would like to get married in their church. Felt like I was being interrogated.

K D.

Yelp
I asked about the price for the wedding ceremony . I request to have my own priest and choir. The guy from the office said that " No, that 's not allowed here. You should go to your church that you are belong to. You called a wrong place. We don't provide the rental. " He is so mean. I feel it is so difficult to get married at the church. What's the point of Catholic? God is very generous for everybody. How come Church never follow the bible ? they use church as a business. I understand that they need money to run the church. But at least they should be open for all catholic people, not only for their own members . Now , I ask " Where is the present of God's generosity???" I got very frustrated with the answer from the guy on the phone. He is very mean.

Yelp
I am Catholic, and I believe the Church should be calling the public to believe in God and stay with him. But what this Church did to me, was stay away from Church. I don't believe this a religious Church, i believe it just wants to make money. They have no consideration for the needs of the public and the children that are growing in the public. For many years I have been going there unless its for a ceremony for a very close friend. It is so sad that our Portuguese Catholic Church turned into this but of course the best of all is gone which was Father Noia.

Yelp
Beautiful church and I enjoyed the homily. It was so pretty inside. 3 stars taken off cause the choir girls were wearing skin tight stretchy nude tank tops and other casual/slutty clothes ... that's just distractingly distasteful. We can all see you talking to each other. It is really rude to have a young choir who can't even pay attention to the mass and who dress inappropriately. Cover your shoulders and turn off your phones! If you can't pay attention how do you expect us to. Other than that it was very nice and traditional. The only reason they get 2 stars instead of 1 is because the church is beautiful inside.
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
Got married here on Oct 1, 2011. Gorgeous church!!! Everything went smooth as lavender and it was a day that friends, family, and of course bride and groom will remember for the rest of their lives. Doesn't hurt passing it every time we are on the 101 either.
google avatar

Kenix N.

Yelp
I went to meet Mary Vargas to prepare for the wedding and she is very professional, nice and pleasant lady to talk to. She is very patient and takes time to go through everything that needs to be done right. BTW the 5 wounds church is very nice :).

P G.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL church, inside and out! Went to a funeral here and felt so spiritual. The priest was Brazilian and spoke beautiful Portuguese that only added to the serenity.
google avatar

Neelam M.

Yelp
Was here for a wedding ceremony. Beautiful church. The architecture on the outside looks like something from Spain. The inside is spacious with beautiful mosaic on the walls.
google avatar

Yelp
I was baby when I first came to Five Wounds with my parents. I am not as religionist as other people who come here are. This church will always be a part of my heart and my life. I always do the sing of the cross as a respect to the church of my childhood. I have many memories. A beautiful place to get married or any other service.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
My best friend Angie (she wrote the review all the way on top) got married there on 7/11 and the whole wedding at the church was great! just as she described and makes me want to get married now haha! but this church is really nice and you dont even have to really decorate it if you plan to have your wedding there, all we brought there were the ribbons for the benches.. absolutely beautiful!

Yelp
Beautiful Portuguese Church with great people. My son was baptized here and Father Mancuso was awesome... he's Italian but spoke words in Portuguese for us and my son! Beautiful beautiful beautiful is the only words that explain this church!!!

Ang L.

Yelp
This church is absolutely gorgeous! It's like having a tiny piece of Europe in downtown San Jose. The church is filled with antique-looking statues, beautiful stained glass windows and mini crystal chandeliers. (The picture doesn't do it justice.) I also love the deep velvety red carpet leading to the altar. My parents got married here and I'll also be tying the knot here later this year in July!
