"Taking a Cablecar in the Middle of the Night The Fjellheisen cablecar in Tromsø, which takes you up Mount Floya, operates 24 hours in the summer, when the Arctic sunshine stays with you all night. Whether you're planning to hike or merely to stand and gaze at the view of the mountains, it's a lovely experience. We went up around midnight, just after a blood-red sun had 'set' behind the peaks. By the time the cable car had reached the top, the sun was visible again. Little patches of dirty snow sat in hollows around us, the town of Tromsø spread out below, and the mountain range disappeared invitingly behind (we didn't accept the invitation, but that wasn't the point...)."

This is a MUST when visiting Tromso but it is very weather dependent and the weather in Tromso changes radically from minute to minute so just keep that in mind. On the day I visited, it was sunny and clear when I took the cable car up but within an hour, the mountain was totally shrouded in clouds and it was snowing heavily. However, the skies would clear up every 15 minutes or so. I got a seat by the window and stayed for a few hours. The cafe is fine - I got a sandwich and a coffee but I wouldn't plan on having a real dinner up there. THE BIGGEST TIP: Make sure you book a roundtrip on the Shuttle Bus which takes you right to the cable car from the Tourist Office in the Harbor area. I had taken one of the regular city buses but they leave you off close to the Arctic Cathedral and then you have a fairly strenuous hike (in the snow and ice) up the mountain. I did book the shuttle bus for my return to the city. The weather the last few days I will be here does not look promising but if it clears up, I plan to make one last trip up the mountain. It is also an excellent spot to see the Northern Lights if the weather is clear. The same night (March 13) that I was on a tour an hour out of Tromso, many people posted their aurora sightings on top of Stortsteinen mountain. NOTE: I did make a second trip up the mountain and this time booked online for both the cable car and return trip on the bus and it made everything 100% better.

On 26th March 2025 I visited Fjellheisen and it was an amazing experience! The cable car is incredibly well-maintained, which made me feel safe and comfortable during the ride. The charges are fair, considering the breathtaking views you get at the top, especially at night. Speaking of views, they are absolutely stunning! The viewing point is perfectly situated at the vantage point, allowing for some truly unforgettable scenery. It’s a great spot not only for enjoying the views but also for skiing adventures. Plus, I appreciated that the washrooms were clean and well-kept. Overall, I highly recommend Fjellheisen for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty of Tromsø while having a fun and adventurous day!

The cable car is not available. They're doing repairs or something. So, we climbed a bit by foot, on the trial followed by the sherpa steps. Not all the way to the top, because it is quite difficult... Also, there are too many mosquitos all around, the size of overweight trolls, and they are insatiable. We took some good pictures though...

Absolutely must visit because of the fantastic views all over the surrounding areas. Great fun walking in the deep snow while enjoying the surrounding mountains. There is a good coffee shop as well. The cable car ride is also fun in itself.

Wanted to go up to see the northern lights but unfortunately it was pretty cloudy. We remained hopeful and waited with many others but to no avail. Nonetheless, we were able to see the beautiful skyline of Tromsø. The queue to enter was extremely long and I noticed that there were some who bought the tickets IN ADVANCE but still had to wait in the long queue. Tickets were pricey too.. For the cable car, it was indicated online that 28 people could fit in it, and my gosh…. it felt like they tried to squeeze as many people in… could not enjoy the view going up as everyone were packed like sardines. Understandably though, as there is only one cable car and the wait for each ride can be quite long depending on your luck (although the duration of the ride is very fast less than 5 mins). Hence, I didn’t mind squeezing so that I don’t have to wait so long at the bottom. Now, at the top, there is only one cafe — Fjellstua cafe. It was once again extremely crowded, and many people were standing around to find seats to shield away from the cold, including my family and I. Very limited seating areas and was told that the seats cannot be reserved in advance, so for those going do take note! Thankfully, we managed to get some seats. We ordered barley mushroom risotto, chocolate crunch cake and bacalao; they were good!!

As you can see in the pictures, you get the most spectacular views from this location. I did think it was quite pricey at around £40 (48€) return, but my friend and I agreed that it was worth the price when we got to the top because it was beautiful. The mountain can be a bit dangerous and so I recommend getting ice spikes if it's snowy especially as there isn't much protection by the edge of the mountain. There's a viewing platform for the less brave and you can take great pictures from there too. The cafe at the top looked great but it was so busy - I wish they had a bigger spot because a lot of people were just walking around hoping to catch a table, I doubt that it was a very relaxing atmosphere for people eating their food. But the food offered looked tasty and had equally fantastic views.

I was initially skeptical about going up here but then we got the city pass and I’m happy we went. Since it seemed like a clear day, we decided to head over there. Several buses from the city center go here. The cable car ride is smooth but a bit packed. The views were great and there were several vantage points. I really liked that we came around the golden hour.

Waste of time. Disappointing for me. We waited in line for more than 90 minutes. At the entrance from below there is a human ticket seller and a one-way ticket , We were informed that at the top there is an walking trail from the mountain down back to the street we came from. When we got to the top there was NO sign or employee of the place to ask where the this walking trail. After searching for about 20 minutes for the walking trail from the mountain , we gave up and decided to take the cable again back down were we came from . BUYING A TICKET BACK At the top there is no human ticket seller and we tried to order online :/ Unfortunately, the website is very unfriendly / inaccurate - we purchased a ticket that appeared on the website as a return ticket. Then we received the ticket in an email, but unfortunately it was a round ticket instead of a one-way ticket for getting back .+ In addition, ONLY one ticket appeared in the email, not two, which forced us to enter together when the gate opened after scanning the barcode. When we got down we asked the line worker where the walking trail on top was supposed to be apparently as they told us if you go out at the top of the cable ON the LEFT there should be the walking trail. Even though when we were up we looked on the left side for sometime but there was no one to ask, all tourists like us, there was no sign nothing that give a clue about it. It is very disappointing . ++there is no way to get a refund for the unnecessary ticket that the website system decided to sell us.. +++the cable holds about 20+ people, meaning that if you get in first you will be lucky and able to see something from the cable if you are the last person as well, but everyone in the middle has no chance of seeing anything. I tried to stand on tiptoe and I barely saw anything . At the top there is a viewing point with a spectacular view. This is to the ONLY credit i can give the place.

Yelp
This is a nice stop while in Tromso. If you're looking for an easy way to get a great view, this is a good place to come. You do have to pay to take the lift up the mountain, but I think the view was worth it. They take credit cards for the tickets and the cars leave every half an hour, so you may have to wait. It's to access by the busses. The view on the way up is really pretty and then the view at the top is stunning. Go at sunset for a really spectacular view. There is a viewing deck at the top, but you can get better pictures off to the side where there are less people. Once at the top, there's not much to do outside of taking in the view. It does get a bit colder up there than on the ground, so dress accordingly. This is a good place to stop to get a good view in Tromso for very little effort. I definitely recommend taking the little bit of time to come see it!

Yelp
This is one of the best places for panoramic views of Tromso. The cable car takes about 5 minutes, and it runs once every 15 minutes or so. Pro tip: please check their website especially during the winter months to make sure they are actually open. On our first visit here, we learned the hard way that they were closed due to strong winds.

Yelp
Beautiful elevated vista views await you at the top of mountain. Also you can spend a good chunk of the day hiking further up the mountain not only getting your steps in for the day but getting even better views the higher you go. At Forty USD for the R/T cable ride seemed a bit steep at first but is definately worth it as the memories and the awesome pictures you will take will provide a lifetime of memories you will cherish.

Yelp
One of the top attractions here. Worthwhile visit. You can purchase one way ticket and walk the treacherous path down or purchase round trip ticket. Plenty of hiking opportunities at the top.

Yelp
A long line, we waited :30 to get onto the tram. About 28 people fit into each depending on their size. The views from the top were wonderful. Admission is 3905 kroner for adults, reduced for children & locals. There is a Park at the top, I closed, Restaurant, toilets and the snack bar. Unfortunately the line to go back down was equally long .

Yelp
We visited this place is 2018. The trip was short but the view made it totally worth it! Once you get to the top, you can walk around but be careful when it's icy. I saw a lot of people slipped (including myself lol). They have a restaurant on top and the food was very good. The building isn't very big so it can get crowded. I don't know how it is now with COVID.

Yelp
The views, OMG amazing. The trip up is very pricy based on how short the actual ride is. My husband and I braved the cold to see the spectacular views of Tromsø. We also saw some brave souls who hiked/snowshoed their way to the top. We went in February and they had everyone crammed into the cars like sardines. With the COVID outbreak, I'm assuming (I hope anyway) that they are taking less people up per trip. There is a cafeteria style restaurant at the top. We had reindeer sausage and hot coffee for lunch, both delicious. I'm sure the views are just as spectacular in the summer.

Yelp
Cables, views, and Tromsdalstinden The Fjellheisen Cable Car is a tramway thing that was constructed in 1961 and goes up to a mountain ledge called Storsteinsen that is about 1,400 feet above sea level. Since in Norway many mountains literally rise right out of the sea, 1,400 feet is a whole lot higher than it seems. The trip only takes about four minutes and they pack about two dozens or so people in each of the two cars. Since the trip is so short they can move whole herds of visitors quite quickly. Up on the top the views are spectacular indeed. The city of Tromso is visible as well as fjords, lakes and of course other mountains in the distance. The cable car is not only used to access the great views but once on Storsteinsen it can serve as a starting point for many hikes to the various mountains, including the iconic Tromsdealstinden, which is over 4,000 feet high and can be seen from most of the surrounding area. There is a cute little restaurant on the top where you can get simple food and drinks and a place to warm up if for some obscure reason you actually get cold. An easy and incredibly fun thing to do while in the Tromso area. The cable car starting point is a bit out of the main city but easily reached by bus. It can get a bit crowded at times but there is plenty of room at the top for people to spread out and you will get to meet people from all over the world speaking all kinds of different languages. Because of all the cool views and the great hiking from the top this is definitely one of those places that deserves more than five stars. It just doesn't get any cooler tnan like this.

Yelp
This is definitely a place where you need clear skies. I ran into a lot of low clouds hanging over Tromso, so it was challenging to get any good photos. Plenty of parking is available. For tourists, it's actually very close to the Arctic Cathedral, so you can certainly plan on visiting both places together.

Yelp
We went up on the cable car at night to see the city lights and were not disappointed. The view was beautiful. The cable cars have recently been replaced with large new cars, so the ride was smooth. At the top there is a restaurant where I had a waffle with jam. Unpon returning, the staff was kind v enough to call us a taxi. Great adventure within the city.

Yelp
This is a must activity in Tromso. You can get wonderful Panoramic views of the city. If you are more into a physical excursion, you can walk up or down and take the tram one way. We had a conference meal on the top of the mountain, it was very good. Lump fish with a mash and vegetables. The warm garlic toast was surprising, but good. Service was attentive and friendly. You can get fast food and ice cream from the kiosk outside the dinning room.

Yelp
Awesome view of the city especially on a sunny day. The views from the top of both the mountains and the city are breathtaking. The ride is expensive but that seems to be the Norwegian standard. The restaurant at the top is also good but pricey. The cafe at the top of the stairs is maybe no my favorite. Go for the experience and the amazing views.

Yelp
The views from here on a clear day are GRAND! But the building is very small for the number of tourists they attract. The seating is limited and you'll probably have strangers just plop down at your table, which will make the dining experience awkward. The food was very good! They have the classic Northern Norwegian fare, Moose, reindeer, coffee, hot chocolate, cakes, etc. and for being the only thing at the top of the mountain the prices weren't too bad. I was unimpressed by the process of loading and unloading the actual cable car, they don't check anybody's tickets really and there's no real orderly process so even if you've been waiting in the loading area for 20 minutes people who are really pushy and rude will just shove you aside and essentially cut you in line so beware because the cars themselves only hold 28 passengers. Worth doing once but wouldn't shell out the money to do it again.

Yelp
Bit of a shitshow on the Fjellheisen yesterday. The hot chocolate machine in the cafe at the top was, unlike our immutable spirits, broken. Also, make sure your latte fits in the glass you have chosen for it. To the left are mugs, clearly labeled for use with the coffee bean's rich nectar. To the right, the vessels large enough for the majestic latte. A naïve failure to read the labels will result only in peril. Furthermore, less ambitious bipeds than we might be advised to invest in some weatherproof footwear if they have designs on scaling this beautiful behemoth. But dat view tho! And snow so sparkly! 5/5, would cable car again.

Yelp
Exepnsive. Very expensive. But then, this is Norway.... great views of Tromsø from the top. It goes up; it comes back down again. It's a cable car...
