We Took a Magical Family Trip to Norway During the Winter—How to Visit

"A cozy, family-run spot attached to a small apartment hotel with an enviable location overlooking the fjord; the author ate burgers and pizza here before mustering the courage to try the floating sauna, describing the café as having generous views of the water." - Akash Kapur

Flåm Marina Hotel is a quiet, understated gem, with truly gorgeous views of the fjord. Its definitely peaceful and relaxing making it a wonderful place to unwind and enjoy the beautiful scenery. We stayed here as a family group to celebrate a 50th birthday, and the setting could not have been more special. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and waking up to the fjord right outside the window was unforgettable. On his birthday, we enjoyed a lovely meal at the hotel, which made the occasion feel warm and memorable. The combination of lovely surroundings and good food created a celebration we’ll always remember. Overall, Flåm Marina Hotel offers a great base in Flåm with breathtaking views. If you’re looking for peace, comfort, and a beautiful setting, this is a perfect choice.

The Flåm Marina and Apartments in picture perfect Flåm is for me a quaint dreamy get away into the cradle of nature. Getting off the Flåmsbana, you first soak in the 360 degree view of the place all around you. Then you start walking around the edge of the water via the well thought out boardwalk and keep moving as you absorb the vista around you. In about seven to eight minutes, you will be at the side of the Flåm Marina Hotel & Apartments. The White cabins, placed right on the water and floating on it ,are a sight to behold, against the backdrop of the serene, brooding mountain behind. The stillness of the water, the occasional flipping of a water creature and the silence all around engulfs you. You walk around the back of the building to enter the reception area , which is housed along with the restaurant overlooking the Fjord. The rooms are beautifully laid out, with a cozy bedroom and a sitting area with sofa and TV and a terrace opening out on the waterfront. Some rooms have kitchenette , making it convenient, if you want to rustle up some dishes with local stuff like Salmon. Ofcourse you can also eat your regular meals in the restaurant, where you will likely have your breakfast in any case. |You can sit on the terrace and watch the day glide by along with the low hanging clouds which make it a point to glide ever so slowly over the Fjord water. Seems, they also don’t want to leave Flåm in a hurry.

Rooms and hotel facilities are great. Can see the breathtaking ford view from the balcony. However, we had very bad experience in dinner, all our dishes are very salty, including cod, venison, plank steak, fries and wven also side dishes vegetables...Only fish soup is just ok. we finished a big bottle of water. That is totally not expectable.

We stayed here for 1 night just so we can do the flamsbana and enjoy the view. It was well worth it, the train ride was amazing and the view was breathtaking. Their breakfast was great which was included and their dinner was also delicious which we paid for. Get the family room for a small double and a bunk bed, ideally for 3 ppl, would be tight for 4ppl.

This place is all about the location, with beautiful views of the fjord from everywhere. It's a very short distance from the centre of the port, but it's surprisingly far enough that you're well out of the crowds and can enjoy those views in absolute tranquility. The rooms are also very generously-sized and comfortable, we enjoyed the space and cleanliness very much. Only weird thing given the space available was the shower was crammed into a tiny space - an extra square meter here would have made the world of difference, while not detracting from the room at all. Breakfast was easily the smallest range of choices from any hotel on this trip, but still adequate and decent quality. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening - because seriously, when you can have breakfast and dinner sat literally right on the shore of the fjord - why wouldn't you? The food was really good.

Google
We enjoyed our stay here. Great location and view (the cruise ships are parked far left so you get great views). Good breakfast. Marking as 4 stars as IMO the rooms are a bit dated and the bed is quite small. The room also gets stuffy quite quickly and the bedroom has no window to outside.

Google
Great view in the room and great food in the restaurant. Both the breakfast and dinner are AMAZING! Highly recommend the salmon for dinner🌟 Also shout out to Heleana, thank you for the wonderful service, you made our day❤️

Unique harbor-side hotel set right on the marina. Superior Double room was spacious, clean, comfortable and modern. Lots of extras compared to other hotels this trip; fridge with bottled water, actual glasses, coffee machine, plentiful towels. Outside the room is a small semi-private deck with views of the Fjord and beautiful surrounds, which would be amazing if not raining. The shower and WC are in separate rooms, which was not a problem-just remember which for night-time visits. Both dinner and breakfast were great and high quality. Being a smaller hotel, the breakfast was so calm and enjoyable. Convenient parking right at hotel and free! Location is both scenic and close to Flam village.

Yelp
A highlight of any visit to Flam! The Flam Marina Restaurant offers an exquisite view of the main harbor's opening into the fjord, and it's the perfect place for a delicious, relaxing meal and beverage. The staff care about keeping the outdoor spaces clean and inviting (we saw a manager not only wiping tables but even the salt and pepper shakers). Our server, Alan, provided excellent service with the cheeriest of smiles, and he offered helpful suggestions about the menu (such as doing a half-and-half pizza when I couldn't decide between two options). We also ordered fantastic a fish dish, wine, and two tasty desserts here. The restaurant and attached rooms are only a short walk from the piers and other nearby hotels, and the views here are the best you'll find in all of Flam. Absolutely wonderful!

Yelp
This location is something from a dream. Walking up to heavenly views and being greeted with excellent customer service. We enjoyed the seafood and burgers which were made to perfection. We had the best seat in the house! This location is walking distance from many places because of the dock. It is a great swimming location too. Wow, just wow!

Yelp
Best food since we've gotten here. I got the vanilla milkshake and it was so good I forgot to take a photo ahead of time. The Caesar salad was phenomenal. The dressing was a tiny bit like ranch, but I still found it delicious. The fries were the perfect amount of crispy to soft, and the garlic sauce we got on the side went really really well with them. The views were gorgeous out the windows. Absolutely would return.

Yelp
Stopped in for a light lunch while staying in this small town during the off-season (early December). Having researched every single restaurant available in the area within walking distance (Flåm is a small town of about 350 people), this place seemed like a perfect lunch spot. And it was. This wonderful little restaurant is located beneath the "Flam Marina Apartments" on the eastern shore. It's a five minute walk from just about anywhere in the port area. During the winter months, their glass-covered porch has portable heaters and blankets. We opted for that area and although it was about 25 degrees Fahrenheit outside, we were warm and comfortable inside. We opted for a very light lunch of fish soup. The soup was included tasty pieces of salmon, mussels, and white fish. The broth was absolutely delicious. The soup came with a couple pieces of warm bread drizzled with what prepared to be some seasoned olive oil. We used the bread to soak up every last drop of the soup. Service was helpful and friendly. We would definitely be back to explore more of them menu. Did I mention the spectacular view of the fjord from our table? Wow!

Jon R.

Yelp
Views are over the top. Incredibly friendly service and a well rounded menu that also keeps the kids happy. Worth the walk across the marina - stop and smell the flowers on the way.

Yelp
The food was fantastic and the view is unbeatable. The service was excellent as well. It is worth the short walk from the marina.

Yelp
Amazing place. Nice food. Fast service.

Yelp
We walked in on a Sunday evening without a reservation but given a table next to the windows with a beautiful view! My husband had the cod which was excellent. My burger and fries were also delicious. Wait staff was excellent. Highly recommend. Menu is limited but good choices.

Yelp
Very good views over the fjord and Harbour, but the meal itself was nothing to write home about Most of us had the sirloin. While it was tender, it was cooked well done (wasn't asked for our preference), and my squash and champignons were slightly cold The burger was served with bacon even though it was requested without, and the bread had been warmed too long so it was a bit too dry The mud slide for dessert was however very good!

Yelp
Food - 4 Service - 4.5 Value - 5 For the area, I'd rate this a 5-star experience since the dining options are limited. It's a little bit of a walk from the where the train station is, but is worth it if you want a quieter spot to dine and relax after a long day. My wife ordered the salmon and I got the cheeseburger. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the cheeseburger was (in the past trips to Europe where I've tried burgers, they just haven't done it justice). We were originally going to eat at another place that was quite noisy and where there was a 30-minute wait. Instead we walked about 10 minutes to here and got seated immediately and had a window table with a view of the fjords and a relatively quiet dinner with just a few other patrons in the room.

Yelp
Flam...a small town engineered as a transport hub and built especially for tourists. PRICE: about $155, which was the cheapest in this artificial town. For what we got it was quite nice. I'm too old for hostels. LOCATION: Its about 400yards from the train station and Norled dock, which can be annoying in the rain. However, the gorgeous fjord view from your room will more than make up for it! ROOM: Or should I say 2 bedroom apartment with kitchenette and fjord view balcony? We got Room #1. Quite nice! But could use some art work and the dirty electric tea kettles need to be replaced. You must also clean your own dishes and cups before you leave or else face a 200kr fee. It was difficult to manage the water temperature in the shower as well. BREAKFAST: Not included, and the cafe doesn't open till 13:00. So be sure to pick up some groceries and the local Coop Market. CAFE: Quite nice and reasonable for Norway. 155kr Fish N Chips reminded us of Ireland. 79kr fish soup was tasty too. STAFF: Friendly enough. Checking in and out was easy and fast. Nice place overall, especially the million dollar fjord view each room comes with. Its just too bad Flam itself isn't a real Norwegian town. (Note: At time of this review, the US dollar was up 50% against the Norway kroner...$1 = 7.5kr vs $1 = 5kr just a couple years ago)

Yelp
This review is strictly for the restaurant and food, and not for the apartments, since we didn't stay overnight here. I found this via Yelp (thanks fellow Yelpers!) and couldn't have been more pleased with our dinner here for our one night in Flam. There's no real sign that this place is also a restaurant, so don't be fooled that it only looks like a hotel / apartments for rent. You can actually dine outside on the patio with a view that most hotels, restaurants and people would kill for. In most other cities, a restaurant with this view would be overly crowded, loud, and expensive, with everyone clammoring to eat as close to the water as possible. Instead, this place was empty and it made for a very peaceful and lovely dinner on the patio. They have blankets and heat lamps so that you won't be cold. The food was pretty good, and probably some of the best that you can get in Flam. It's a pretty small town, so the options are fairly limited. We got a delicious piece of salmon - it was fresh, the fillet was quite large, and it was perfectly cooked so that it was slightly rare in the middle. We also got a pizza which was a decent size. It has tomato sauce, parmesan, thin slices of ham, and a little bit of arugula on top. We were hungry so it great that this was filling enough and it was tasty. I would definitely come back here for the restaurant and would also love to stay in these apartments if I need lodging in Flam. Come here at least for dinner: both the food and views are worth a short 10 min trek here (from the train station)

Yelp
The fjord view, outdoor patio and our entrees made our dinner memorable. The blackened cod filet and rack of lamb were divine. Everything tasted fantastic, the local beer complimented our entrees. Portions were good. The location of the restaurant is a short walk from the marina. Quiet n tranquil!!!

Yelp
This hotel/apartment was perfection - it was quiet, out of the way, cozy and the views are stunning. We did not eat at a the restaurant, so this is just a review of the accommodations. The apartments are two bedroom/one bath with bunk beds in one of the bedrooms, so if you have a family or a group, it sleeps 4-6 depending on how you situate everyone. The bedrooms have no windows which was the only thing that sort of bothered me because I felt very boxed in at night, but it wasn't the end of the world. There's a small studio-type kitchen that is fully stocked with any kitchen supply you may possibly need. Which is perfect because making a meal in your hotel/apartment is probably the first meal you will have as a traveller in Norway that doesn't cost $80 for 2 people. The bathroom is stocked with linens, toilet paper and hand soap but that's about it. You will definitely need to bring your own toiletries (but there is a small market in Flåm that stocks anything you would possibly need for a night or two if you forget anything, plus reasonably priced food, of course). You will need to do your own housekeeping and do your own dishes before you leave. Unless you are some kind of slob monster, this shouldn't be a challenge for any grown adult. This hotel is a very easy 5-ish minute walk from the train station and the town center. There is a pier that you can follow the entire way - no need to walk on the road, which we did before we realized the pier actually does wrap all the way around basically to the front door of the hotel. The road is very twisty and kind of scary because you can't see around the bend. Be safe and follow the pier. We spent two lovely nights in Flåm and got to spend two mornings sipping coffee and enjoying the gorgeous view off the patio. Every apartment has a patio that looks out into the fjord which is the main reason we chose this lodging. It was the best possible choice and I'm so glad we had the experience. Don't hesitate to stay here, you will love it. If I ever find myself back in this corner of the world, I would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
If you love a good view, this place should be at the top of your list. The rooms are massive by European standards. Rooms come with a kitchenette so you can cook simple meals if you'd like. It's a short walk along the pier to reach here. Flåm is a small little town, so it's easy to navigate.

Yelp
While waiting for our train to Oslo, we came here as we hadn't eaten anything for lunch. Location was a bit far off from the information area, and as we were carrying luggage, it was not very convenient. But restaurant has a pretty good view. Now, onto the food. We ordered two things: their pizza (ham & cheese) and their cheese & bacon burger. The pizza had a very weird flavor to it (the cheese?) that I did not enjoy very much. The crust of the pizza was okay, but not the best. The burger was pretty good, but the buns were slightly soggy due to the sauce so I ended up removing most of the bun. You can come here for lunch, but don't expect too much.

Yelp
We arrived late, 7:15 pm (closed at 8 pm) and were the only diners. Two options for seating - eating on heated porch or inside. Clean, well organized dining room. Food was very good and was out of kitchen quickly. Salmon was very fresh and delicious sides were potatoes baked in a wedge, asparagus and pickled beet and pickles - all very good and tasty. My companion had Chile con carne served with garlic toast which was also very good. The only downside was that once the main course was served, our waiter disappeared but we did arrive 45 minutes before closing.

Yelp
This is a great restaurant with an awesome view of the fjord. We ate here twice in two days because it was so good. The cod and salmon in particular. If you ever end up in Flam, take the 10 minute walk from the train station and visit this place. You will be amazed.

Brennen T.

Yelp
I went here to eat when I was in Flåm because the reviews were great and so was the view. It's not too far from the main town center, but far enough so I didn't see many tourists. The waitress was very nice and answered all my questions. I ended up getting the chicken club sandwich, with fries and coleslaw. The meal was delicious and filled me up, not to mention the gorgeous view!

Yelp
I did not stay at apt. I ate at the restaurant Twice. It was a lovely view and very nice food. Salmon cooked for dinner was nice. Cheese board was good. Nice beer. And great view.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch before taking the ferry to Bergen, so this review is only for the cafe. The good: - it's a little out of the way, so not as crowded as some of the cafes that are closer to the ferry docks. - the views are amazing!! - the outdoor seating area was very spacious, both with and without shade. Not so good: - the bottle of beer I ordered was noticeably warm. They offered it in a bucket of ice to cool it down. I ended up getting something else to drink - the fact that the beer got so warm in the first place seems a little suspect. - the burger was not good. The meat was dry, tough, overcooked. The other burger contents were on the light side - salad greens, some mayo, red onion, tomato. It was hard to tell if there was actually smoked cheese in the burger or not! - there are not a lot of staff and they seemed a little overwhelmed when we were there as there was a large tour group eating inside the restaurant - the service was a little spotty and we had to work to get their attention a couple times to get a menu, order, pay the bill, etc. All in all - it seems like one of the better and less crowded places to stop for lunch in Flam if you are pressed for time, so I'd come here again for the ambiance.

J D.

Yelp
Get away from the crowds and head to the best lunch view in Flam. Food is very good, service prompt. Cod in butter sauce was delicious!
google avatar

Alan R.

Yelp
Wonderful view on a quiet setting away from the tour boats, cruise ships and souvenir shops. We enjoyed their hamburgers with nice thick patties of quality beef. Free wifi is available for guests. The staff was very helpful and allowed us to store our luggage while we took a short walk.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Very cosy place for dining and price also justified. Good for family. We stay in Fretheim Hotel but found the menu and buffet for dinner not matching our taste. We found this one viaYelp and would say we made the right choice. Two adults and one kid cost NOK 700 + 50 tip. Fairly reasonable.

Scott K.

Yelp
Just around the horseshoe of the waterfront across from the train drop off, this place will provide the affordable out of the way dining spot that you will be looking for in Flam. Stroll along the docks and around the side of the building to enter the cafe. The burger platter was fine and the service was friendly. Didn't seem like the outdoor dining was open for lunch but if it is, give it a try - the view is fantastic.

Don V.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery. Sitting outside facing one of the most gorgeous fjords in the world. Carlsberg on tap came with wifi for 3 hours. Relax, drink a beer and Skype home. Worth every kroner.
