Our experience here was really weird.
The food was excellent, but the service was some of the worst I've ever had. We sat to eat at the bar; it was very busy, so no tables were available. Generally, I love sitting at the bar, but for some reason it seemed like no waiter in particular was in charge of where we were sitting, though people on either side of us seemed to have good & attentive service. Drinks came pretty quickly, and were good, as did our basket of bread (really delicious), but putting in our order for mains took a while.
When the mains arrived, we had no cutlery or napkins. Eventually cutlery appeared, but though the woman bringing it had napkins, she didn't give us any.
And since no one checked in to see if our food was good or if we needed anything else, we didn't get a chance to ask for them. I tried to catch someone's eye - the guy who took our order seemed to be avoiding us, and I couldn't make eye contact with him.
At the end of the meal, after our plates were cleared away, we were asked if we wanted anything else, and we said no, just the bill. At which point the bill appeared with an alacrity that made us feel like they wanted us gone, even though two of us were still finishing our drinks and it seemed like the rush was over.
The food, however, was excellent- the sea bass with toasted almonds and fresh mint was soooo delicious, and the heirloom tomato starter and corn were amazing. The vegetable tart was underwhelming, and whatever else we had was fine.
If the service had been standard good service, I'd have no problem giving this restaurant five stars, but they made us feel like they didn't want us there, which made the whole experience really uncomfortable. I've rarely had an experience like this, and kept wondering if we had done something to upset or annoy the staff. I couldn't think of anything. I don't want waiters to bend over backwards, but to sit there feeling like we were an inconvenience that they wanted gone was pretty shitty and really undermined all of the other good things about the restaurant.
