How to Visit Highlands, North Carolina — America's Best Mountain Town

"If you’re looking for a more private getaway, consider booking one of the two cabins — The Wren and The Kingfisher — at Flat Mountain Farm. The current owners, Margaret and Chris Shutze, purchased the property (previously a rhododendron nursery) in 2019 and have since turned it into a micro-resort that can also host up to 200 guests for weddings, rehearsal dinners, and large corporate events. 'They put so much thought into each design element in their houses, not to mention the roaming property is beautiful,' says Braucher." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We came across Flat Mountain Farm and immediately knew that was where we wanted to get married in 8 short months! From start to finish, Lindsay was an absolute pleasure to work with. The property is absolutely stunning naturally and the 3 homes on property are like something out of a magazine. The design is impeccable and breathtaking. You can feel the presence of God as soon as you step on property. The barn is where we had our rehearsal dinner as well as the reception and that place is just something special. We had many guests tell us it was the most beautiful venue they had ever seen and we could not agree more. Stunning doesn't do this property justice!

My now husband and I chose to utilize Flat Mountain Farm (FMF) in July 2023, for our wedding in October 2024. We wanted a small ceremony, with just close family and friends, so the 'effortless elopement' package was a perfect fit for us. The package included the pastor, my bouquet and his boutonniere, appetizers for the guests, a wedding cake and champagne toast. Seems perfect, right? I was nervous about working with them, because I was scheduled to have a call with FMF, after a handoff from Tembo Hospitality in November of 2023 and no one ever called me. Then it was back and forth via email and no real progress was made. I initially scheduled through Tembo Hospitality, but once the handoff was done to FMF, it was very unorganized. I did my tour with Tembo, had the contract agreed to and payments through Tembo. Everything with Tembo was great. But once they parted ways with FMF and did the handoff, I was not taken seriously anymore. We envisioned staying on the property all week with our family and friends, and getting married October 17th. By the time the venue actually spoke to me (March 2024) the houses were already booked. Bummer, but we figured it out elsewhere. Fast forward to August 2024, about 3 months before our wedding and they reached out to see if we could move our date, because they could not provide what was in our contract. Of course since this is our wedding day, I already had a dinner booked and other items for our guests on the day we picked, so I was not open to moving our wedding date so the venue whom I already had a contract with, could accommodate. Our wedding venue overbooked us, and we got the short end of the stick. They ended up canceling our wedding 3 months before the ceremony, so I then had to scramble and find a new venue. Oh, and also book all of the items that were included in the 'effortless elopement' package as well. A total nightmare for a bride, as the venue is the hardest part to nail down, and venues are booked years in advance in some cases. Highly recommend looking somewhere else. Property is beautiful, the people are unorganized. I feel like my wedding wasn't taken seriously because we wanted a small event.

My husband and I settled on our happy place, Highlands, NC as the perfect place to get married. We stumbled upon Flat Mountain Farm & immediately fell in love with the property. Our ceremony was small & included all of our closest friends and family members. No matter what season you decide to get married, this property will be STUNNING. The owner, Margaret, has a beautiful story and background. She has thought of absolutely everything to deliver a magical experience. There is so much charm on every foot of the property. Each place to stay (Wren, Kingfisher, & Airstream) have the most thoughtful touches & great views. The design of each space is detailed, classy, & has tons of personality. Margaret allows her guests to "personalize" their wedding experience so that each wedding or event planned is one of a kind. Celebrate outside by the pond, inside the restored barn, or by a waterfall! The versatility of the property makes planning an event so much more memorable! We loved our experience & our friends have not stopped talking about it. Don't even get us started on the sunset photo opportunities... your pictures will be absolutely breathtaking!

Such a delightful venue for a picturesque wedding tucked away in the most beautiful mountains! Having grown up in Highlands, picking this venue was an easy choice when making such an important decision regarding our June wedding. We had access to the property the entire weekend and never felt rushed in planning out all the activities, from the rehearsal dinner to the post-wedding breakfast on Sunday morning. Margaret was extremely easy to work with and has such an eye for detail, going above and beyond to make the weekend special, with a gift bag for both the bride and groom- such a thoughtful touch :) The entire bridal party was also able to stay in the beautifully-decorated guest houses (with the added bonus of a personal hot tub at each house). Memories we will cherish for a lifetime! We were undecided about the location of the ceremony and Margaret was very understanding and allowed us to decide last minute to have a lakeside ceremony, that could not have been more perfect! The property has an endless supply of stunning locations for your photographs, including a mountaintop view that’s idyllic during golden hour. The Airstream tucked away next to the waterfall was one of our favorite spots on property. Waking up with the love of my life, accompanied by a hot cup of french-pressed coffee was a moment I’ll never forget. If you’re thinking about booking an event with Flat Mountain Farm, don’t hesitate- you won’t be disappointed!

As an investor I wanted to see the property as a guest before I put it an offer. I was blown away by the sheer beauty of this place. I’m not sure it could get any better than this location. For the bad. The service is lacking and is the reason I have taken it off my list of places to purchase. The hot tub was absolutely disgusting and they were not willing to put forth the effort to make it right. The inside of the home was disgusting, photos attached. I would be willing to stay again and reevaluate my review based upon my next visit, but for now this is the honest truth. I’ll post pictures next. Thank you and I hope everyone enjoys the beauty and outdoor like we did, just needs improvement.

We loved our stay at Flat Mountain Farm! The Kingfisher cabin combines a historic cabin with all the modern conveniences. The owners' luxury hotel design background is evident in the charming decor. There is also beautiful handmade furniture. The Flat Mountain Farm property is lovely and we enjoyed exploring Highlands and hiking the many scenic trails in the area. We're already talking about a return visit!

We had our dream wedding at Flat Mountain Farm. We wanted a location that really shared our love for nature and the outdoors where we could have a natural environment with the elegant touches that Margaret’s eye for design provided. Having the property for the entire weekend was amazing. Our entire wedding party was able to be accommodated to stay on the property and enjoyed all the amenities and activities like the hot tubs, fire pits, and the guys really enjoyed fishing. We had an amazing lakeside ceremony and partied the night away in the Scandinavian styled barn. Because I’m not a night person it was heavenly to just be able to sneak away to the airstream on property after the night was over and get an amazing night of sleep without the stress of needing to make it to another hotel. 10/10 would recommend Flat Mountain (:

As a wedding photographer, I was recently privileged to capture Victoria + Ryan’s rehearsal dinner at Flat Mountain Farm, a luxury micro-resort nestled in the heart of Highlands, North Carolina. Flat Mountain Farm is a stunning sanctuary that seamlessly blends rustic charm and modern elegance. The expansive 28-acre property is filled with picturesque scenes, from its lush green landscapes to the private pond and waterfalls, making it a dream location for any photographer. The Scandinavian black barn, where the rehearsal dinner took place, is an architectural marvel. It's not just a barn, it's a work of art. The black exterior contrasts beautifully with the surrounding greenery, while the sliding white oak doors add a touch of sophistication. Inside, the barn exudes a cozy yet luxurious feel. The high ceilings and open space provide an airy atmosphere, while the warm lighting creates an intimate setting perfect for a rehearsal dinner. The antique log cabins on the property offer another layer of rustic charm. They have been beautifully redesigned with a modern twist, providing a perfect blend of old and new. The cabins, with their log exteriors and chic interiors, are a visual treat and offer numerous photo opportunities. All around the property, there are serene spaces that can be used for small gatherings or quiet moments. The hiking trails offer a close encounter with nature, and the private pond adds a calming element to the whole scenery. In conclusion, Flat Mountain Farm is an aesthetically pleasing venue that offers endless photographic opportunities. Each corner of the property tells a story, and as a photographer, being able to capture these stories was a pleasure. Whether it's the scenic views, the striking barn, or the charming cabins, Flat Mountain Farm is a venue that impresses at every turn
