Hotel Fleur De Lys is a really beautiful hotel to have a slow and calm pause from the hustle and bustle of San Jose. It’s not a good fit if you want a five star resort but it’s perfect if stunning historical architecture and cultural authenticity are your priorities. The common areas are comfortable and I always saw guests enjoying the front patio or upstairs sitting area. I stayed in the jacuzzi suite which I can’t recommend enough but the other more modest rooms will get the job done. You can hear the city outside which may bother some but as a city slicker I slept right through it. It’s an older building and has the quirks you can expect from one but I highly recommend this hotel.

I was in 3 star hotels in Costa Rica and that certainly does not correspond to the standard. The receptionist is extremely unfriendly and never works. When I arrived, she first let me wait 30 minutes and looked very annoyed that I'm there instead of apologizing. The hotel is located right next to a railway line and it is extremely loud. You can also hear every sound from the other guests. The rooms are musty and in poor condition. Breakfast consists only of Gallo Pinto, bread with marmelade and pineapple. I wouldn't even give the hotel one star.

Very unfriendly lady on the reception. They promote very nice pictures of rooms, but reality is completely different. They put us in the small cell with no windows and a bad smell of humidity. She said we have booked that, but on the booking were completely different pictures, not one like that. If we knew that it would be like this, we would never make a reservation in that place. Beds look like someone already used it. Maybe they should not iron the bedsheets or else. Only one positive thing is location.

We were traveling with two other families and so had 3 rooms at the hotel. They were much nicer than we anticipated for the price we were paying. The rooms we got were as pictured in the site. They were clean and nice. The staff were friendly and responsive. It's in a central location and close to restaurants. For us it felt like we were in a house and not a hotel.

Quaint old fashioned hotel centrally located in a Victorian mansion. The Museum of National History is across the street. You will hear traffic, so bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Great value and charm.

Stayed here as part of a G adventures trip. Room initially had no towels but they were brought quickly upon request. The room was right next to reception on the ground floor so whilst convenient, there was a lot of noise from the hallway as guests came in and out, or the front desk was working. Good water pressure and temperature in a spacious bathroom. A lack of convenient plug sockets though. The room got stuffy without AC, even with the window open and the fan on. My bed was broken and dipped in the middle. We came back again at the end of our trip. The room has a ceiling fan but was smaller. Again, lots of noise enters the room. The window backed up onto some form of storage or staff access area so it was super noisy. Good water pressure and temperature though. The WiFi is bad in some of the rooms. Frequently disconnected and dead spots. Reception staff are friendly. You need a code to get in after 8pm as they lock the front door.

I spent 3 nights at this hotel. The waitresses were very friendly and helpful. The room has no aircon, but ventilator. Ventilator was enough. In the evening it was even cold for me in September. Breafast served regular stuffs plus fresh fruits (papaya, watermelon and pineapple) and Gallo Pinto which is national traditional dish of Costa Rica. After 7pm it is not too safe to walk closeby as the street is empty but I took Uber so it is ok. The location is very close to city center, national museum, jade museum and china town. Great price value.

The rooms and the service are great. Breakfast is ok, but not the best. The biggest downside is the location with the loud train noises and honking starting from 4:30 am till late in the evening is terribly annoying.
