Yelp
Iconic, colossal, divey, dingy, and gritty, Flora-Bama offers everything from tons of live music, too many bars to count, eats ranging from an oyster bar to fast casual family dining with everything from crispy dill pickles to crusted yellowfin tuna to filet mignon, an annual mullet toss [the fish, not the haircut], lotto tickets, packed dance floors, souvenirs and merch galore, ubiquitous lingerie hanging from the rafters/beams, a package store, patio/deck, marina, yacht club, graffiti galore, beach access, and Sunday live worship services including Bible-based teaching-- well that's the Flora-Bama experience: truly something for everyone!!
I've been to the Flora-Bama too many times to count over the years and [I'm sure glad these walls can't talk], I have some F-B stories that are, well, better left untold.
Now that bad decision-making days are long gone, when in the Orange Beach area, F-B is my group's destination for 4 things: scratch off lotto tickets [thanks F-B! We still don't have a lottery in Alabama]; a dozen or so raw oysters [or Royal Reds if they are available]; a Solo cup of white wine with a couple of ice cubes to keep it cool and classy; and a seat on one of the picnic tables the deck. Oh, and we always have to peruse the merchandise, as one Alabama news reporter described as a "gift shop that rivals a Dollar General, only with more expensive...merchandise" [Kelly Kazek at al.com].
The Flora-Bama serving staff are on their game and they have to be due to the masses who frequent the place! This isn't your quiet hole-in-the-wall where you sit at the bar and chat up the bartender. If you expect that at the Flora-Bama, you may have to forfeit your Southern Card.
The bouncers/ID checkers are legit, for good reason, folks from all over frequent this establishment, I can't imagine trying to keep up with all the national and international credentials potential patrons present as ID.
You never know who you may bump into at the Flora-Bama, usually someone you know from northern-mid Alabama who, like you, is vacationing in the "Redneck Riveria" as we affectionately call it, is likely there too! Then there's famous folks like Kenny Chesney and Jenna Bush Hager [among countless others] who've popped in.
Do visit the Flora-Bama! You can't miss it, as dusk approaches, there's always Police cars with lights flashing at the crosswalk from the parking area to the main complex. You will definitely leave with fun merch, a full belly and fond memories!
