On the Grid : Flora

"Flora, a beautiful botanical garden in Cologne, is a wonderful place to enjoy a sunny day. Opened in the mid 1800s, after the destruction of Cologne's older botanical garden, it has a mix of German, French, Italian and English garden elements. It's open daily and free of charge, making it a great daytime activity. And, if you're hungry, try out the Flora cafe for a nice lunch. You can either eat your lunch on their terrace or take it in one of their picnic baskets and eat it out in the gardens. Select photos: Flora Köln." - Bel Epok

A truly peaceful and enjoyable place, definitely worth a visit in Cologne. Entrance is free, and you’ll find plants, flowers, and trees from all around the world. The gardens are beautifully maintained, with plenty of benches where you can sit, read a book, study, or simply relax and enjoy nature. The Café Restaurant inside the garden is also worth a stop, offering tasty dishes and interesting presentations that make the visit even more delightful. The only downside was that many of the indoor greenhouses were closed for renovation. Hopefully, they will reopen soon, which will make the experience even better. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a calm and refreshing break surrounded by nature. 🌿✨

What a place! Huge park with an extraordinary amount of plants from all over the world. Beautifully taken care of. The flowers looked marvelous even in the August heat. A very calm place in the heart of a busy metropolis, I highly recommend it!

Went to The Botanical Gardens on our last day as a chill experience. Used public transport to get there from the centre of Cologne and the trip was quick and efficient. The gardens are free to entry and are a brief walk away from the train terminal. You need to walk between the Zoo and Aquarium, this makes it a interesting excursion as you could also factor these in on your visit. The gardens themselves were well maintained and beautiful. There are plenty of benches around for you to sit on to take in the beauty of the area. On our visit the cafe/bar wasn't open so would advise to bring some drinks/snacks with you depending on how long you intend to explore. There are a couple of toilets around the site which cost 50 cents, these are clean and well maintained.

Absolutely loved it! Even better than I thought it would be. Spring is obviously a great time to visit, the sun was shining and all the flowers were in full bloom. The gardens are massive and there are so many paths and different sections so it keeps it interesting as you’re always seeing something new. It’s incredible how many different species of plants they have.

Beautiful peaceful place, very calming atmosphere and amazing flowers around. There are plenty of quiet places to sit and enjoy nature. Highly recommended! The entrance is free, the park is open till 9pm during June -July.

This is a beautiful garden that is peaceful and perfect for a breath of fresh air and nature. There are essentially no tourists. There are tons of flowers ans trees with short descriptions about each plant's breed and original.

Absolutely beautiful, very peaceful botanic garden with lots of nice flowers, trees. It's the perfect place to visit as a nature lover. And there were plenty of seats so you should definitely choose one and take your time watching every tone of green. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited in Cologne

I visited the public restroom at the Botanical Garden in Cologne and was very disappointed to see discriminatory access. The toilet for women, children, and people with disabilities required a coin payment to enter, while the men’s urinal was free of charge, you only had to press a button to open it. This is unfair and discriminatory. As a pregnant woman, I found this especially problematic: if I hadn’t had a coin with me, I would not have been able to use the toilet at all. Public facilities should provide equal access to everyone, without such discrimination.

Yelp

Yelp
What a beautiful park. Full of different interesting plants in it. It quite a nice place for people who likes nature and plants. Iniside also has a historical building with nice architecture style and serval lovley gardens. Which seem not so common in Cologane. I am glad that I have visited this place. We came here as group, it was definitely a great place to catch up with friends. We went around the places. There were serval greenhouses inside with different themes. It was really interested, some plants I have never seem before. Some just simply beautiful. When we passed the lotus lake, we all took our time, sat down and chit-chat. It was great place to have a break. There was much to see in park, we were there more than an hour. The park lies not so far from the city center. It took around 10-15 by U-Bahn. It is very close to the Cologane Zoo. Beside it's quite a well-known place for the local, so just ask someone if you really need a direction. Free entrance and they got a very nice café inside.

Yelp
This place is quite incredible. With all the possibilities the Flora offers I can see why it is such a popular place for parties, food or a nice walk. Many companies rent the Flora for the day or for a few hours. A great way to impress your guests because of the beauty of the Flora. The service here is top notch from when you walk in until you leave. The food they serve at the parties is amazing. With the taste and variety you will not go hungry. The nice little cafe in the back is very comfortable and let's you sit outside and enjoy the sights. The Garden is beautiful. Takes about an hour to walk the entire garden and admire the varieties of flowers. You can also get a lunch basket and have yourself a very nice picnic. A great place to visit and a must for any garden lover.

Yelp
My personality is very much drawn to the city. I've never been much of an outdoorsy type of person. But, living in a city you begin to notice how the chaos, noise, and trash begin to wear on you. Which is why I'm thankful for the little pockets of nature like the Flora. Now, I'm no botanist, but it seems that the Flora has an amazing variety of flowers and other plants with different species depending on the season. Included on the grounds are numerous greenhouses and special exhibits. The Flora is perfect for the visitor as well as the long-time resident just taking a summer stroll. The only thing that the Flora is currently missing is a quality outdoor café. At the time of this review the old main building was under renovation. Hopefully, something like a Bistro or café are in the plans.

Yelp
A lovely walkaround when the weather is nice. There are many different plants in the Garden coming from all over the world. A great place to take pictures. Köln is well known with its parks and gardens. "Flora und Botanischer Garten" is one of the best at the region.

Yelp
OK. Im Australian so Im biased but in Cologne I really miss the smell of nature, space and living things that arent people and dogs in general! I was having a claustrophobic day today so on a whim decided to head out and check out the botanical gardens. I was expecting to see a park full of dead plants since its such a miserable winter but I was wrong. The park is well set out, although more maps and signs would be useful as I got lost a couple of times. There is a wide variety of plants and 'environments' on display. In particular the camellia gardenhouse was beautiful and I could have spent hours just sitting in there. If you want a time out from the city I would highly recommend to come here and go for a walk or sit in one of the many spaces, read a book or people watch.
