15 Remote Islands You Can Actually Visit

"At the westernmost point of Europe, this lush island is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves and takes its name from plentiful goldenrod flowers that cover its 54 square miles and craggy coast. Travelers can fly here from mainland Portugal with Azores Airlines." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Flores is, without a doubt, the most beautiful island in the Azores. If you’re planning a trip, set aside at least 2–3 days to truly take in everything it has to offer — it’s that special. One of the must-do experiences is taking a boat trip with Captain Marco to see the dramatic coastline of Flores from the sea. Along the way, you’ll pass stunning waterfalls that pour straight into the ocean, explore sea caves, and, if you’re lucky, spot dolphins as you head toward Corvo. Once in Corvo, you can hike around the crater or enjoy a picnic with incredible views — just make sure to bring supplies, as options on the island are very limited. Back on Flores, one of the highlights is Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, a peaceful lagoon surrounded by towering waterfalls, accessible via a short 15-minute hike. We explored the whole island by scooter, which made the adventure even more fun and flexible. Do note: flights to Flores are often delayed due to weather, so plan with some buffer time. But trust me — it’s 100% worth it. If you’re heading to the Azores, Flores is a must-add to your itinerary.

The most beautiful island of the Azores archipelago. Peaceful and quiet, with beautiful nature. Amazing and nice people. Near the airport, two great shops with the best canned tuna, the one by the church has a bigger selection. The island is easy to get around by car, allow more days, at least three, nowhere will be as beautiful. Charming European Hawaii.

This island although small and geographically remote, as it stands midway between Europe and America, is very rewarding. Full of green and volcanic landscapes the island is better explored with a guide - driving a car, in a full long day tour. You will be better if you book the tour in advance, because there are few tour agencies in the island. Also because of the stenuous driving in narrow roads they drive in vans, offering few places. The island offers many possibilities for hiking and you can add a daytrip by boat to the nearby small island of Corvo. But keep in mind that rains a lot and sometimes rough seas make Corvo daytrip impossible.

A unique, beautiful & breathtaking destination. We managed to see the entire island (N to S & E to W) in a hire car in about 4.5 days. Truly amazing!

A must when visiting the azores , unique and picturesque, relatively small and mostly unpopulated, not many grocery stores so plan ahead especially when fresh vegetables and fruits are concerned, many trails to walk on and najestic sea views

The most beautiful place in the whole Europe. Very exotic place. Virgin nature looks like in Hawai or Asia. Very beautiful tours from Lajedo to Fajazinha - Faja Grande, Morro Alto to Faja Grande and also from Faja Grande to Ponta Delgada. It is a big mistake to go around the whole island just by car.
