5 Floating Bars in the Caribbean for the Ultimate Tropical Cocktail

"The vision of local fisherman Floyd Forbes, this driftwood hangout-on-stilts (rebuilt after major hurricanes) sits off Parottee Point on the southern coast. Bring a hometown flag or license plate to hang on the ceiling — and bills, too, because Floyd's is cash-only." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Catch a Boat Ride to Happy Hour Bypassthe roadside watering holes and take a boat ride to Floyd's Pelican Bar, instead. This thatched hut stands on stilts outinthe water, makingit a dreamy spot for an afternoon of swimming and shooting the breeze, solo or with friends. It's 30 minutes from Treasure Beach (arrange a boat ride through your guesthouse or resort), and you can arrive for lunch and stay until after sundown for the just-caught fish, rum, and chilled Red Stripe on the menu. Inside the tiny shack, the flags of various countries hang andprevious customershave left messages scrawled on planks and benches. Sit outside and watch the pelicans flying in formation across the horizon."

Floyd's Pelican Bar – Negril, Jamaica - Gastro Obscura

"Hoisted on stilts above the waist deep cerulean waters of Jamaica’s Parottee Bay, Floyd’s Pelican Bar would like to serve you a “Pelican Perfection”. Located about a mile off of the coast, this water-bound watering hole looks as if it may have been nailed together by someone who was already deep in the drink. Essentially a shack made of driftwood, palm fronds, bric-a-brac and scrap wood, Floyd’s is reminiscent of someone’s clubhouse that just happens to require a boat to approach. At the end of the day, it pretty much IS someone’s clubhouse—and that someone is local fisherman Floyd Forbes. Floyd had a dream you see—a literal dream—of a bar rising out of the sea on wooden stilts, a boozy oasis in the middle of the ocean. By 2001, Floyd had made this dream reality by lugging wood out into the bay on his fishing boat, and building his dream bar one plank at a time. At first, the sea bar was essentially Floyd’s own little personal saloon where he and his fellow fisherman buddies would play some dominoes and throw back some cold ones after a day’s work. But before long, his ramshackle paradise was discovered by the local tourism industry, who helped Floyd make the place an honest-to god drinking establishment in a clear win-win deal for everyone involved. Despite this, the bar was almost closed down due to worries about environmental impact and fire hazard. However, the bar has managed to remain open after some clever legal navigation and now sports a small collection of fire extinguishers! The bar also features a huge amount of seemingly random memorabilia hanging on its walls. These trinkets feature everything from license plates from around the world to flags hung up in all corners. While you’re visiting, if you can’t bring a larger memento to hang, bring along your trusty Sharpe or pocket knife to make your mark on this wonderful, and constantly evolving, structure. One of the major attractions about the Pelican Bar, aside from its unique decor, is the warm and clear water surrounding it. The Pelican Bar itself is built on a sandbar that stretches out in all directions for a good while allowing easy walking areas. Be warned, however, that if you wander too far you may encounter sea urchins. But fear not! If you just avoid stepping on it and leave it where it is it’ll be pushed off the sandbar soon enough. These days, a 20 minute boat ride will deliver you to the Pelican Bar where you can eat, drink, sunbathe, swim, and possibly receive an invite to play some dominoes. Despite the local hotels giving the place some clout, it is, at the end of the day, a shack on stilts a mile out. There’s no restroom, you go home when a boat comes to fetch you, and while the water is warm and shallow, drunken stumble-swims home are ill-advised. Know Before You Go You can pay a local fisherman to take you out on his boat to the bar. These trips also frequently, but optionally, can take you down some of the near by rivers to see wildlife and even to swim." - brodyc, frenchbot, shalveyadam, aribrown, Rachel

Was told it was an island… it’s not a real island. More like a pile of sticks - man made. Not really worth it. Have to take a motorized speed boat ride. Bargained it down 35/ person from 50/ person. Takes about 30-35 min to get from the mainland of Jamaica to the place. Disappointing. Snorkeled a little as it was listed as a great snorkeling spot. Not really. it’s of grass/ trash in the water surrounding…. No fish in the grassy areas. No coral reef. There was about 10 different types of tropical fish behind the structure though- in the sandy/ not grassy area. Would not recommend this place as a great snorkeling spot. More of a tourist trap. Not interesting.

This fantastic piece of Jamaica is a must see. The food they bring out of that tiny kitchen is unreal, and the people are friendly as can be. You can get your smoke there as well. Swimming is in shallow water despite the bar being a kilometre out into the water, and the ride out by boat is a great experience. You can hire a fisherman to taxi out from black river. The boat was $20usd each to get there and the food is understandably pricey given where it’s being made. Everything has fantastic here. Do yourself a favour and check it out!

Great experience overall. Definitely worth it. A sandbar in Jamaica 🇯🇲, can never go wrong. I didn’t eat the food but they have food and a bar, so no need to bring anything other than a good time. Make sure you look for Sheldon, he runs a boat service as well so look for his shop.

Fun times at this one of a kind bar in the middle of the ocean. We enjoyed some Red Stripes and some reggae music. Floyd was hiding in the bar area and we ran into him there. Respect! Definitely visit this place if you're in Jamaica. Not to be missed! Also, Aidan sells some really cool souvenirs. Make sure to check out what he has to offer.

The food here was delicious I had a little bit of all the dishes my friends ordered. I had some of the curry fish which was absolutely spectac ular and the parrot fish fried was a little bit over dry . I prefer having more of the flesh available to eat then crunch however it tasted well, the french fries was good with the shrimp that I had a piece of from my friend's plate and everything was pretty okay. I can say that I was able to sample everything 100%. When it comes to the drinks they had a strawberry or mango daiquiri which was not very pleasing as it was just a lot of sugar with very limited amount of alcohol splash. Pricing for it was definitely overcharged. Now I must give kudos to the cook when it come to the plantain. the plantain oh my goodness was so on point it wasn't over fried it was not overcooked it was just perfect. As far as the atmosphere was concerned nothing to rave about a simple shack on the water maybe to some Tourists from the Northern side of the equator ,may think it's a big deal but it wasn't for me. It was a shack made out of woods had a whole bunch of license plates and people carving their names and businesses into the wood, NOT aesthetically pleasing it was not it was just simple. We came in over from the dry land to the restaurant by a wooden craft boat. As of today's date when this was surrendered the cost is 20 US dollars per person. I think it's very steep of a price to pay but if you want to experience it ,if you're not going to swim it you got to go by boat. So actually youhave no other choice if you're touring. I'm met the owner of the restaurant a dreadloc man who seemed to be very happy and very proud of his establishment which in every right he has and should be. So big up yourself mister, I forgotten your name and wish you much success as life goes on. ThIs something to do while you're within the NEGRIL AREA. If you wanted to eat on the water this is definitely one spot to check out

I always wanted to visit this place and I am glad that I did and can share my experience. Getting there was a long drive with windy roads and pot holes. Once you arrive make sure that you call Floyd to get picked up by one of his boats. They provide life vests. The atmosphere is relaxing. The vibes is more fun when you visit as a group. We met Floyd. Nice person and he shared the history of the place. The highlight of the visit was the food. I had curry fish for the first time and it is delicious. My wife had the steamed fish and she couldn't finish it lol. If you are going to St. Elizabeth I recommend visiting this Floyd's Pelican Bar.

What a brilliant place, a ramshackle bar on a reef/sandbank, selling drinks and food, and a boat ride to get there. The atmosphere is great, the people are great, and how it is made is fantastic. Just have to forget Health and Safety 😅🤣😂
