If you’re visiting Zermatt and are looking for a unique mountain experience, the Fluhalp is for you!!
We took our 3 kids ages (15,14, and 11) to this mountain lodge after a hike from Chez Vrony. Before that we had taken the Sunnegga funicular. The hike from Chez Vrony took us 1 hour 20 mins with a few stops along the way to catch our breath and drink water. It was a difficult hike, mostly uphill. But, it was worth it!!
I’ve never been so happy to reach my destination! Ha! We arrived with our backpacks and tired legs. We got some water and took in the views of the Matterhorn and lake. The sky was cloudy and rain was coming but it was still beautiful. We were greeted and easily checked in by the staff. We made our way to our rooms, we had 1 room with the Matterhorn view (holding 2) and 1 without (holding 3). Our rooms were 19 and 14.
After we settled in we had a nice hot tea on the front porch. It was nice to sit and relax. Before dinner we took showers. Note their website says you must pay for showers but we didn’t realize you had to pay in coins. You also can purchase filtered water for much cheaper with coin francs. We only had a few franks for our family of 5 showered with 3 francs which gave us 6 mins. It was hilarious as we all took turns in batches of 2 to share the minutes. We made the best of it. You also must bring your own towels and soap.
Dinner was great!! The shared dining room is cozy and comfortable. The service was prompt and friendly. We ate a broth soup, small mixed salad with French (aka ranch if your from the us), chicken with creamy mushroom sauce and homemade pasta. It was delicious! For dessert we had an espresso ice cream and they provided a custard option for our kids. The kids also had the sauce on the side which was easily accommodated by the staff.
After dinner went to bed around 9:30-10. We slept with the windows open and it was very pleasant. The other guests in the lodge were friendly and polite. We slept well and woke at 5:30 to see the sunrise on the Matterhorn. By 5:45 it was lite up!! Wow!! My husband went for a hike and I attempted to go back to sleep. Why wake up if coffee doesn’t start till 7 :)
Around 7 my husband and I shared a cappuccino and mint tea in the restaurant. We woke our kids around 8:15 and we had breakfast together. The breakfast was eggs you hard boiled yourself, yogurt, cheese, apples, bread and jam. There was also a chocolate cereal option.
All in all we loved this adventure!! It will stand out as one of my favorite parts of Switzerland. Keep in mind it is not fancy and consider it an adventure!! To give some perspective we also stayed at the Burgenstock (ultra fancy and luxury). The Fluhalp is not that, but it is extra special in its own way!! Bring your francs!!
