9 Portland Places That Raise More Questions Than Answers

"Nobody, it seems, can resist the charms of this Portland boutique, stuffed with curiosities and found objects. If you’re shopping for gifts, you won’t walk out of here empty-handed. It’s bursting with treasures: ye olde curiosities mixed with new apothecary lines of perfume, home fragrance and candles. Inside, you’ll find neat stacks of wonderful books on the glamorous ladies of yesterday; as well as educational tomes on all things botanical, entomological, and mythological; and encyclopedic occult volumes. Candy hued vintage silk kimonos, slips and party dresses are dripping from stunning antique armoires. Cheeky taxidermy geese and goats are celebrating their 80th birthdays amid the well-appointed clutter. There are bowls here overflowing with Pixie Stix straws, violet floral mints, and plenty of other old-fashioned favorites. Reproduction tin toys share space with vintage ones and there are always Cap Guns, Pick-Up Sticks, and Magic Gardens close at hand for kids or nostalgia-driven adults. All of this is surrounded by, next to, and beneath a collection of some of the most lush velvet settees, chairs, and ornate curio cabinets. Co-Owned by Cindy Rokoff & Kalaisha Watrous" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I brought my daughter in briefly right before closing time when we were visiting Portland earlier this Spring, and the owner was SO kind and helpful! She let us browse without pressuring us to leave, and after we bought a refillable pen that my daughter really wanted, she went the extra mile to send us some refills across the country so that my daughter can easily continue using her favorite pen when the first cartridge runs out. Thank you for the thoughtfulness and being so awesome! We'll be back next time we're in PDX!

Google
Stumbled upon this place while we were walking around and it’s such a cool and friendly store!! Lots of fun and vintage decor, trinkets, and clothes. Such a lovely place and would highly recommend!

Google
I have been coming here for years. During my freshman year of college I came here to get postcards to decorate the walls of my walls. I have gotten lots of stickers and candles. The clothing here is very beautiful. I miss the Cat that used to be at the store was the cutest thing in the world.

Cazimi Spa

Google
A wonderland of joyful beauty! I’ve loved this boutique since forever! The owners are the sweetest people too. If you love art, supporting artists and using/wearing beautiful things in your daily life this is the Mecca for you. You won’t be disappointed.

Unique store with lots of boutique stuff. A little pricey tho

Google
This is a unique and eclectic shop with a variety of goods! It was very reflective of the Portlandian identity. It was a progressive, inclusive, safe store. The parking is limited. Many of the items were a bit overpriced for my taste, especially the many candles and perfumes.

Google
Absolutely the most wonderful original gift shop on the West Coast. Knowledgeable, courteous staff. 10/10

Andy Lee

Google
Visually appealing gift shop, not overwhelming, featuring many local artists

Yelp
Gorgeous shop with a vast array of goodies, trinkets, and gifts. Very unique item and cosmetics, natural body items, and it smells great!

Yelp
This store has a little of everything and a whole lot of quirky! Antique dishes, trays and pedestal plates contain collections of random items like: vintage doll arms and legs, David Bowie head shots on a button, butterfly patches, individual tarot cards, felted small animals, and colored rhinestone hair pins. This is mingled with vintage clutches in every color;some with amazing handles, vintage drinking glasses, a variety of individual tarot cards, bath soaps, perfumes, vintage jeans and dresses, vintage coats with fur collars, and furniture. Surprisingly it works! It's a purposely curated store of new and vintage treasures, most with a touch of quirkiness that will bring joy and personality to your wardrobe, your house or to a friend receiving the gift. It's the type of store you get lost in, where time goes by quickly and yet you are still making your way past the front section. Some items you pass quickly; others soak to you and you have to linger. Since Flutter is designed and curated with this intent, the people working there let you browse and wander and ponder at your leisure. If you are on N. Mississippi this is a must visit shop! You never know what you will find and what you absolutely need to have, and that's the beauty and the fun of it!

Yelp
This is such a great curated, eclectic shop! I'd been searching for a jumpsuit that fit me for some time (I'm mid-sized) and I found TWO here, very reasonable priced. The person at the front desk was also very nice and welcoming. Their selection of jewelry, art, and trinkets is fun to look through, and the whole place just reminds me of the funky locally-owned shops that I love Portland for. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Exciting store lots of cool items and a very cool collection of vinyl . Postcards gifts and some cool threads make it a fun well rounded shop.
google avatar

Bon S.

Yelp
I visited the shop when she was quite busy. I had a question, but was ignored. I believe it was because I was of Irish decent. I really think it should be all inclusive shopping. Maybe if they knew I had three adopted black siblings and they would've treated me different. Hope they're inclusivity gets better.
google avatar

Amethyst W.

Yelp
I loved this shop. It has so much to look at and it's easy to just get lost in examining every little detail and trinket that they put together. I picked through all the tables and shelves checking out the eclectic mix of jewelry, collectibles, and random odds and ends. Definitely a fun little store to browse through and maybe pick up a couple of souvenirs to take home from your trip to Portland.
google avatar

Alissa N.

Yelp
Best unique and affordable gift/art shop in Portland. Definite must stop if you love all things vintage and unique.
google avatar

Morgan K.

Yelp
I got the cutest rings from this store! 3 rings for $28. Every piece in here was so fun and unique. There was so much character and charm to each item in the store. I would 100% go back!
google avatar

Jasmin S.

Yelp
This place was one of our last stops on our itinerary on one of the last days of our trip. I picked up some really adorable earrings for my mom and myself, and if you're looking for some cute goodies to take home to loved ones, this is a place that i'd recommend. my only complaint is that the shop owner/lady that checked me out was rude and short with me. she treated me like a nuisance and just seemed upset to be there. i was confused about how to select my items since they were hung on a rack with several other pairs and i didn't want to disturb the collection or break anything accidentally. it soured what would've been a lovely experience.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Pure magic. This curated shop is like going into carefully curated space of joy. Varied treasure to be found from vintage doll arms to an old Pendleton wool snap shirt to great books to lost 70's nude photos. Looking for some overalls- they got em! The buyer for this shop as an eye for detail and each visit I find more unique offerings.... with price points that are comfortable (reasonable, even). The shop has great energy, the staff is super kind and helpful. I would recommend this as a go to when visiting the Mississippi District. It never disappoints.
google avatar

Adrienne D.

Yelp
This is probably my favorite shop in all of Portland- it's a delightful mix of vintage/found items, new merchandise, and a grey shopkitty to boot! It kind of feels like you've entered the home of a very cool witchy woman who has a keen eye for decorative items, perfumes, tarot cards, vintage slips and dresses, art books, creepy dolls, beeswax candles, costume jewelry...This is the first place I would stop for a one-of-a-kind birthday bauble or thoughtful piece of home decor. Prices are very reasonable as well, I purchased a made in Oregon beeswax candle, two tarot cards, and a vintage black lace slip for $20 total. While some stores aim to be painfully hip yet decidedly uninteresting or inaccessible, Flutter manages to be cool and carefully edited without the pretense. It's classic Portland in the sense that it's effortlessly unique and not afraid to be a bit different. Whimsy done well! There are several other interesting shops (and tea!) along this stretch of Mississippi Avenue, I recommend spending an afternoon in this area- great to show out of town guests too.
google avatar

Yelp
My new favorite store in Portland. Unique, weird, magical. I especially love the variety of modern day treasures and vintage collectibles. So many random pieces you could turn into art. Will make it a "must stop" at every Portland trip!
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
I went here looking for clothing, and I walked out with a treasure trove of finds. I love, love, love the glitter letters and quirky buttons, plus the awesome cards.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Flutter enhances the "rapidly flap your unique wings" spirit of what is Portland. Old bird baths are filled with vintage items, display cases are accented with small ornamental bird cases, and even the Chinese fans have doves flying across them. It's a fun store to wander around, explore and discover something new every time you walk in.

Yelp
Holiday party! People in fabulous costumes and electic attire! Champagne! And the Djangophiles were playing their wonderful acoustic Parisian swing... the sort of glamorous party that I never got invited to, but dreamed of -- and we got to go in! Our hostess, the business owner, Cindy, welcomed us, served us champagne, and enthused about her goodies. Great goodies! Interesting goodies! Kooky books and nostalgic toys and memorabilia, fabulously recycled fabric arts and sparkly bling, and the nicest collection of GOOD smells in bottles I've ever encountered (I don't wear scents, as a general rule -- most of them are strong and stinky, and unnatural). I bought THREE bottles of perfume. Most I've bought at once ever. And a book. For my aunt, I swear. And had to be dragged away from all the shiny, happy things in every nook and cranny by my poor tired hubby, who was shopped out half an hour into the expedition (not normally a problem, as I don't generally LIKE shopping). So much eye candy... it was like the monkey trap for me. And any place with a shop-cat named Rizzo is OK by me.
google avatar

Dani N.

Yelp
I am a repeat customer and often make my friends come visit, mostly for the cat. His name is King and he's arguably the most chill cat I've ever met. His tongue is almost always out due to a cleft palate, and you can buy buttons with his face on them. Brilliant selection of vintage head scarves as well.

Yelp
I just love this little boutique! It has so much character, charm and truly holds an individual appreciation of humanity. Even the decorations alone make me feel more connected with my inner being and spirituality. I stumbled upon it with my sister and we came back twice in the same week! We got a few souvenirs for our kitchen, and a few cards and books about spirituality and meditation. Most of all, I love that they offer Tarot readings on Thursday afternoons! We took my mom to Flutter made a little triple date out of it, and were super happy getting readings done together! The store owner is also very friendly and down to earth; she makes all customers feel so at home and just naturally balanced with one another. I won't hesitate to go again in the near future.

Wendy W.

Yelp
I have to express how much I appreciate a boutique that surprises every time I wander in seeking the unexpected. There is something for every cool human on the planet in this store. There is an eclectic collection of books, vintage ephemera, and some really unique accessories for the individual and home. I love to buy gifts from their curated collection of candles, fragrances, books, jewelry and clothing. I never leave Flutter empty handed. Ever.
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
One of my favorite stores in Portland! So many great things in here and they're always changing! The store owner is so sweet and I love her sweet cat king! There's definitely an abundance of treasures in here! Be willing to spend a little time because you could sift through stuff for ages in here!
google avatar

Yelp
This store is so Portland! And this store is one you take your time walking through and taking everything in. A huge collection of interesting and unique finds with piles of excellent French perfumes. Several years ago I became addicted to Tokyo Milk perfume while shopping at a favorite place at the coast. Well, for years...freaking YEARS, I have had to wait to restock my perfume when I visit the beach. Then I found Flutter which carries my beloved fragrance for a great price. I dropped on by towards closing and was chatting with the lovely lady at the register who was super friendly and even gave me a perfume name recommendation based on which perfume I use! I snuggled the adorable grey kitty who guards their store and love the fact that they adopted him from the Humane Society as a rescue. I even found several things on their clearance table that were fantastic deals. I will be back for certain.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I could spend hours wandering around this store and still never want to leave! They have a unique selection of gifts, books, perfumes, stationary and clothing. I want everything there. Plus the snaggletoothed kitty wandering the counter is just too cute :)
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Oh Flutter...a whimsical, magical place really, that will always hold a special place in my heart. Filled to the brim with sorts of stuff like jewelry, garlands, teacups, small wondrous finds, and delicate cards...I could get lost in here for hours and rightly so since from walking in to walking out, your eyes will be amazed and heart content. I loved the store cat, nestled in between a soft pillow and the couch it sat on, rested easy while customers came in to greet him (or her?). Their is a birdcage in the back of the store with a line of finches chirping happily on their perch. Low lit and inspired, I love the beautiful clutter all around. I left happy with a small find: A fluttering butterfly clip which I slipped onto my wool knit hat I was wearing that day. It was by far the best pretty little thing I've purchased yet.
google avatar

Noelle W.

Yelp
This store excites me every time I walk into it. It has fancy imported french perfumes, fake birds, child's toys from the 20's, vintage clothing, and so much more. The store makes me feel like a child that has all of her dreams of dressing up and playing make believe come true.
google avatar

Ash. A.

Yelp
I look forward to the future when my house looks like Flutter! Talk about your crazy cat lady, antique collectors home! There's amazing taxidermy animal heads, vintage clothing, adorable nick nacs, and beautiful handmade and local jewelery. Think burlesque dancer meets grandmas attic. You'll find something for every need in your life.
google avatar

amii c.

Yelp
The only reason my review for this place isn't higher than 2 stars is because of all the dead animals. I don't know why they would use a billion dead animals as props and displays. It's fairly ghastly. I'm not a vegetarian and neither is the BF, but that doesn't mean we approve of using corpses as displays. As for the things they have for sale, it's all fantastic. We bought gorgeous textured velvety wrapping paper, some artsy mixed-media print postcards, and a harmonica (don't know what the BF was thinking when he bought that!). It's quite a fun store to explore, but the profusion of dead animals rather spoil the enchanting ambiance.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
Kind of a confusing and beautiful store, Flutter claims to be a "delightful diarray of found objects and clutter." Huh? Flutter is an intriguing place to browse, because it stocks the creme de la creme of beautiful worn objects. Most things are useless, purely decorative (and arguably overpriced--they are "found objects" after all!), but where else can you find old birdcages with twittering finches, antlers, rolls of velvet ribbon and stereoscopic devices?
google avatar

Miel H.

Yelp
A visual feast esp. if you pay attention to detail. This is a vortex so be prepared to enter and emerge a while later with all kinds of crafty ideas and maybe some wierd things that you just had to buy and will figure out later exactly WHAT to do with. Oddly sensual in a way with all the fabrics, color and books on burlesque but also slightly scary with the dead animal heads. If you met someone for the first time and they took you to their house and it was Flutter, you would either find them incredibly interesting or run for it. I was there for their 2nd anniversary party and loved it. I found things pricey but not out of this world, except for some of the "refurbished" clothing items. I felt like someone took all the work out of visiting 1,000 garage sales by selecting the items you would want but didn't have time to look for. The women behind the counter were friendly, no pressure and er, cute! The customers were interesting folks to chat with and seemed to reflect the curious collection of goods. Flutter is definitely worth visiting. It is almost a museum of sorts. Simon says, You will enjoy.
google avatar

ChezZY S.

Yelp
Flutter was one of my favorite boutiques on Mississippi. Highly recommended by the people at Animal Traffic to visit and described by another as Gypsy-esq we found ourselves in Flutter and walking out with tons of things. There is so many things to look at. Everything from paper goods, housewares, clothing bath and body goodies, vintage photographs and vintage accessories, handbags etc etc. Get the picture. It's a store with tons of things and lots of little tchotchkes. Decorated very cute with friendly staff and a four legged ruler of this place a very big cat named King you will find yourself perusing through looking through everything for a long time plus trying to play with King. I scored on a vintage travel bag for $125. True it's a tad much for vintage when some think of it but it is quality leather and well made and very big and I can't wait to use it for my next turkey day trip. Book marked this place and check them out!

Yelp
Great eclectic boutique in the funky and fun Mississippi District. Awesome selection of so many different and unique items. Easy to find great things at all price points. We found all sorts of fun things for ourselves and some great gifts for others. Well worth your time to come in a browse. Nice layout with well placed displays. Say hi to the awesome shop kitty, King. His elderly furry presence was a nice way to end our visit. The sweet lass behind the counter (I missed her name) was friendly and sweet to talk with as well. Just don't tell King he has competition. .

Yelp
When I lived in Berkeley my favorite store was Tail of the Yak. Everything in that place is highly desirable, and Mr. Big always knew that anything from here would be A-Okay in my book. I disparaged of ever finding anything like it here in Portland. Silly me! I was so wrong. Flutter is exactly my cup o' tea! I love this store with the same fervor I usually reserve for my family, good food & tasty drinks! It's THAT good! This treasure chest is jam-packed with all sorts of goodies that, technically, I don't NEED. I do actually WANT pretty much everything in here, tho'. Each item has a story, & the stories just get better and better the further you wander into the cavernous space. Lots of things under bell jars, sweet smelling concoctions & potions, sparkly stuff, old ephemera, photos, books, gowns, hats, jewels. It's like a pirate treasure and the ideal Grandma's attic all wrapped up in one! I cannot reveal any purchases made here as I am supposed to be on a tight budget (which I often cannot stay on)...Just go here if you have some disposable income, need a gift for someone, have a birthday coming up...If you're in trouble & you need something to 'fix' the situation, you'll find just the right "I'm Sorry" gift...I will be making many happy sojourns here. Just don't tell! Shhhhh....
google avatar

katie g.

Yelp
This store looks like what I'm trying to make our house look like. A mish-mosh of lab glass, creepy antlers, recycled stuff, expensive candles and naked lady photos. I wish I had the time to find all this stuff like the owner of this place does. My house would be the best ever. If you have someone in your life that you have a hard time buying a gift for, stop by here. They'll probably have something that you would have never thought of (oh, a horse mandible! perfect!) and will please the pickiest of recipients. Also, a great selection of cool ribbon and wrapping type papers if you ever need any (and who doesn't!).
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
I love this store! It was one of the best shops we went to during our stay in Portland. The store is very unique and it is a great place to get a gift or something for yourself. The items were also unique. I bought five post cards here for 5 dollars. Weird doll faces and also a comic book inspired post card. They also have a fat cat that just lounges around. You can get plants in the back.
google avatar

Keisha M.

Yelp
Found a few items! Cute and different. Souvenirs (lotion, soap and aroma) from CA and OR!
google avatar

Christen M.

Yelp
Not sure exactly what this store wants to be, but I sort of enjoyed browsing here. Expensive (upwards of $1000) velvet-covered vintage-y looking couches, birdcages, etc., and a bunch of smaller, less-expensive gifts (fancy soaps, candles, etc.) that look like something I'd get for my grandmother. The store does, however, boast several finches hopping around in a cage. Three stars because I liked listening to their soft little calls.

Abby V.

Yelp
Very cute store with lots of gift options and the owner is super nice. Love the cat there too. Would go back lots!
google avatar

Leela S.

Yelp
Window-shopped here for a few minutes while wandering down Mississippi with a friend on a rainy Saturday. Lots of cute knick-knacks, cards, and assorted paraphernalia. You know that friend who seems to have everything? Want to get them a little gift that'll probably elicit a smile? This is your place for that kind of gift. The rear of the store is even a consignment shop! I'm not into vintage clothing, though, and that's all the consignment section seemed to house. I'll stick to the front of the store, thanks.
google avatar

Melodi R.

Yelp
Put A Bird On It! Well, IN it. They have finches in a cage...looks like an interesting merchandising fixture in this quaint boutique. I loved the feeling that I was finding one-of-a-kind trinkets. They have a little of everything from clothing to jewelry to books to decor to perfume to toys. You can spend quite a lot of time rummaging through this cluttered, yet organized, store.
google avatar

Siobhan C.

Yelp
I LOVE Flutter. I go to Mississippi Ave. often and I always make sure to visit this place and say hello to King, resident cat. They sell all kinds of postcards, coffee table books, perfume, gifts, jewelry, and vintage clothing, and more. Probably one of my favorite places in Portland.
google avatar

Makenna C.

Yelp
The freak in me is completely head-over-heels in love with Flutter. I'm completely aware that some people might be turned off by the exact things that I LOVE about Flutter, and so be it. More for me to enjoy. Flutter carries a wide array of interesting objects: vintage plates or toys, interesting books about photographers, places, or full of vintage illustrations, lots of perfumes, some vintage clothing, bird cages, embalmed or encased animals/insects, and jewelry. You definitely won't be bored here, and many of the things this shop carries you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The people working here have always been really friendly and talkative about my purchases, I imagine that it must be fun and interesting to see some of the things people walk out of this store with. Currently on my covet list are a huge anatomical/surgical illustration book and a little baby bat encased in plastic. Take from that what you will!
google avatar

Nate S.

Yelp
Super cute boutique antique AND plant store in back. Didn't have much time to really soft thru the aisles but the things I did see were unique and fun. Great neighborhood collection of shops n bars to happy hour drunk n shop your way thru. Check it out.
google avatar

Cindy H.

Yelp
Really awesome shop. Happened to come across it while we were waiting for a table at a restaurant next door. If you're looking for a gift for a woman, this is a great place to check out. I loved their collection of scented candles and jewelry. They've also got really cute vintage clothes!
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
The best-smelling store on Mississippi, by far- and now they sell flowers, too!!! The ladies that own and run this store are so cool, they have the cutest, fluffiest grey cat and I want everything in this shop!!! The sell Tokoyo Milk products and great perfumes from many small, hard-to-find lines. Beautiful scents and an incredibly well-curated store! The way they decorated this shop is absolutely beautiful!!! Even window-shopping lifts my spirits there!
google avatar

Ignatius R.

Yelp
Adorable boutique. You never know what you'll find here, with the constantly changing inventory, but some things are a given: Lovely vintage dresses, locally crafted jewelry, artisan perfumes, and a adorable and friendly resident kitty. Drop and and check it out, you're sure to find something you didn't know existed, but now must feel an overwhelming desire to take home with you.
google avatar

kathryn b.

Yelp
Ummm.... ok? Props and interesting displays, yes. BUT what could I possibly need from this store? And, believe me - I can justify! It seemed more like a museum; a place to go browse and look at interesting artifacts. Clutter? Yes indeed. In this day and age, I just can't justify clutter. And, by the way, we were not even greeted with a hello while we browsed the clutter. Boo.

Adaobi U.

Yelp
This was a really great experience and I've been convincing many people to come and visit when they get the chance. It's always good to support the work of underground artists and this museum is doing just that. It's interactive, instagrammable, and a great learning experience. Go! Go!
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Kudos on a singular vision extremely well executed. Whether or not I personally want to buy any of the stuff in Flutter is not really the point - the owner(s?) knows exactly what she's going for, and pretty much knocks it out of the park. It's sort of like the best bits of every estate sale you've ever gone to, all (neatly) exploded into a store, with the addition of some new soaps and candles and jazz like that. Overall, I would say the prices are fair - not cheap, but far from gouge city. Very charming and entertaining, and I think you might be able to find something for everyone on your gift list here if you looked hard enough.

Yelp
I adore this fucking place. It is fucking adorable. That is one of the many reasons why I adore it. It is close to my house. I can walk there. When I am on a walk with my dog and pass by, see something kick ass and pretty in the window, they kindly oblige me to walk in with my dog on the leash. Considering she is a hairy motherfucker, that is so awesome. They have beautiful (but overpriced) vintage jewlery, which I have bought and received as gifts. Their changing room makes me want to smoke some hookah. Their selection of perfumes are great--I have easily gotten bored of designer shit, I just want something simple that smells sexy! So I got the one called "Dead Sexy". It's dead sexy. People smell it in the air and know I'm almost there. That's how often I wear that fucking shit. It rocks. Everything is so pretty, I don't even care how cliched this stuff is. I get happy just going in there. The owners also opened up a new store called EDEN on the West Side. I have yet to go there, but have a talented jeweler-friend who sells her wares out of EDEN, so I'm certain it rocks as well. FUCK YES, FLUTTER. Also, I like the birdies. Their chirps make me smile.

Yelp
this is my favorite shop in pdx. i love it very much. the merchandise is fantastic! there's something for everyone. wonderful scents and lovely old thingies.

Yelp
everything i dream of is in this store. lace, shiny things, feathers, vintage loveliness, nostalgic kids toys and ephemera. here is a list of things i have spotted here that i have literally had dreams about. -a taxidermy purse -a post card of a creepy Victorian family -handmade vintage leather doll shoes -tiny birds with pretty feathers ( live ones.don't stick your fingers in the cage!) -a giant book of collages -and the list goes on also frocky jack morgan sells dresses here and they are oh so dreamy!
