Asheboro, North Carolina, Has Beautiful Hikes, a Lively Downtown, and the World's Largest Natural Habitat Zoo

"This Sunset Avenue sports bar is best known for its specialty pizzas and lively atmosphere. The owners said they’d open a pizza place when liquor by the drink passed in Asheboro, laughing and claiming that would happen “when pigs fly” — hence the name. Today, the restaurant is part of the Zoo City Social District. Save room for dessert: Multiple flavors of cheesecakes rotate through the menu, and all are homemade." - Trudy Haywood Saunders Trudy Haywood Saunders Trudy Haywood Saunders is a writer and editor based in North Carolina. Had a dinner with my co-workers. It’s a Pig themed restaurant and having good vibes. I ordered “The Pig Bianca” pizza which was almost vegetarian pizza if you don’t add chicken toppings. We also ordered Chicken wings and Nachos. Pizza was good and so cheesy. Wings were also good in taste. Overall satisfied with taste of the food. Service was even better.

They have a very nice place. They were really busy at lunch time, but we were seated right away. Our waitress was friendly and on task. I had a BBQ pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. It was really good. I totally recommend this place.

I had the “slap yo Mama fish dog” mahi fish, slaw on a hot dog bun and it was delicious! House chips great too! My husband had the Philly cheesesteak and he said it was good too! Sports bar atmosphere, football on tv. Service was great & friendly; food came out a little slow. Only reason gave 4 on atmosphere was bathroom had a weird smell. We would certainly eat here again when visiting the Asheboro, NC area. Good variety of options on the menu and good downtown location.

First time trying flying pig. Based on the average reviews, I expected much better food. The fried pickles were very good. With the fish and chip entree, the fish was just ok; the chips were not seasoned well and pretty flimsy. I would not recommend even trying the nachos. The equivalent of an entire jar of salsa was dumped on top, cancelling out any other topping on the nachos. Store bought salsa at that. I see many good reviews but did not have an experience that would warrant that. Drinks were good enough for it not to be a completely wasted trip.

The pizza here is fantastic! We ordered half pepperoni half other toppings and light tomato sauce. My son said it's the best pizza he's ever ate. It was very good. Just had to wait a long time for it.

I cannot stress it enough on how amazing this place is! My mom and I came in around 1:40 without realizing they closed at 2. We were sat quickly with Makenna, who was extremely sweet and attentive! Justin welcomed us in and promised us that we were perfectly fine to come in and enjoy their food even though we came in late. We had the pig nachos and a side of fries with queso. Both were served hot and fresh. We had plans to shop afterwards and they accommodated us by packing our food with ice and everything. I 10/10 recommend coming here! It was my first time ever being here and I will for sure come back in when I’m in town. Super friendly and welcoming staff. DONT SKIP OUT ON THIS PLACE!

The food was great and so was our waitress. It was really crowded but they had us seated within 10 minutes.

Visited on a Sunday with my wife and another couple. In general, it's a place I would revisit. However, the food lacked a bit of taste. We ordered the angry okra jalapeño which has no okra, it's spicy and great tasting. Also ordered the queso dip, very good, and the black beans and corn salsa which was average tasting. I ordered a chicken Philly cheese steak and my wife had the chicken salad croissant. Her sandwich was dry and lacked taste. My sandwich was also bland. Our friends ordered a pizza, extra cheese, and extra pepperoni. They were pleased with it. The service was superb and the prices were competitive. I would come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
Love hopping over to Asheboro to The Flying Pig for a weeknight meal. Love the combination of booths, chairs and tables, and bar seating. The bathrooms are in the back near the kitchen. The women's side has a really cool painted sink that my littles love. The food in there is good. We love the nachos that come with pulled pork, melted cheese, and their barbecue sauce on top. The mozzarella sticks are a nice appetizer as well. The fish and chips tonight were made with cod that was on the smaller side and the fries could've been fried a little longer. They also can make chocolate milk for the littles, which is a big plus for us. The service in there has always been decent. Our waitress tonight was very attentive but not pushy. We don't mind the 30 minute drive on a random night because we like the food and the atmosphere.

Yelp
I went here not expecting much and got a lot! This hometown pub where everybody knows your name had outstanding food and service. Excellent. I loved my fish taco dog. Wow!! Everyone I was with could not stop bragging about their food, the ambiance and service. Everything was great.

Yelp
Super busy on a Saturday night with a half hour wait that I spent wandering the streets of Asheboro but the hostess was very nice about it. I arrived a few minutes after the text message that my table was ready. Still leaning hard into my keto diet, I went with the chicken wings. They were apparently cooked fresh as they took about 15 minutes to arrive, still very hot from the fryer and swimming in sauce. The "Buffalo" was actually still quite spicy so the small pot of blue cheese dressing was helpful as I demolished the wings. Meaty and cooked properly, my only complaint is the bath of sauce. Friendly service, noisy and fun atmosphere, it was a good evening. [Review 321 of 2024 - 3577 in North Carolina - 21355 overall]

The equivalent of an entire jar of salsa was dumped on top, cancelling out any other topping on the nachos. Store bought salsa at that. I see many good reviews but did not have an experience that would warrant that. This is a laid back restaurant. On the walls you'll see a plethora of sports memorabilia, license plates, things from all over. Service was ok. Average. Drinks were good enough for it not to be a completely wasted trip.

Yelp
The food takes a bit to come out to your table especially if you order pizza But it's delicious! I suggest their chips and homemade white queso. I wash they would bring back their salman cake burger. The things I like from here are Slap ya mama fish dogs BLT pasta salad Chips and queso

Yelp
More than your typical sports bar food! We had the Philly, Ham and Cheese, Pasta Salad and Angry Okra! The Philly is deliciously prepared with peppers, and onions. The meat is cooked to perfection, it's so good! Exactly what I was craving 5 stars for the angry okra which in fact is not okra at all haha! Sliced jalapeños breaded and deep fried- comes with ranch! Very good and something different highly recommend if you're a spicy fan! Sweet potato fries and ham sandwich are both great as well! Can't wait to come back and try the pizza

Yelp
Stopped by this hidden gem while passing through on our way home from a baseball tournament. So glad we decided to stop here for lunch. Will definitely be back when passing through Asheboro. Great food, service, & cleanliness.

Yelp
Great place to meet with friends and enjoy a snack or meal and a few beers. They make excellent pizzas, my favorite pizza in fact! Great salads, and sandwiches, I've been eating turkey croissants since my first visit 12 years ago. Also love the angry okra. Everything really, except the wings and buffalo chicken sandwich. They are edible but tend to be overcooked. Better than undercooked chicken I suppose but just messes them up.

Yelp
Fun place with a large menu full of bar food favorites. Even with TVs and sports all around I found myself just enjoying the decorations. There's a moose with a hat and an arm coming out of the wall and check out that old MJ stuff over there. They did well decorating the place...especially if you enjoy local stuff, sports memorabilia, and a whole lot of unique. The menu is certainly bar food, but it's extensive. Every bar food you can think of like wings, tenders, nachos, burgers, cheese steaks, etc plus some I wouldn't have thought of like a grilled bologna. I was in a burger mood so I went in for the simple bacon cheeseburger and fries. While the burger and bacon were cooked a bit more than I like, they were both tasty. There were so many fries my dogs may be reviewing them on here. Great value when you see the size. The service was excellent. She was quick, attentive, funny, and very responsive to everything. Overall I can't wait to go back to downtown Asheboro and try this place again...Definitely wings on round 2.

Yelp
Great little restaurant in downtown Asheboro NC. The service was awesome, speedy drinks, and a great overall atmosphere. The pizza was great and the Philly was one of the best I have ever had. Staff was extremely helpful and I saw a lot of teamwork to get folks what they needed.

Yelp
Amazing friendly staff, great food, reasonable priced food and drinks. Family friendly or a great place to grab a beer.

Yelp
10 out of 10 highly recommend. Excellent atmosphere with super cute decorations. Great food selection with unique eats. Fries - crispy & seasoned. Service is quick & friendly. Our waitress was helpful with her suggestions. Entrees were just as good as the appetizer. Great prices & excellent selection. Yelp has never led us wrong, thanks for the suggestion.

Yelp
Great pizza and wings! Honestly, everything I've gotten from There has been yummy! The service sometimes can just be okay.

Yelp
I was really excited to try the Flying Pig because everyone has always hyped it up. So my husband and I decided to try it with a group of friends this past Saturday. We arrived around 3:30 and it was already getting crowded but we were seated immediately ( group of 5 ) and we were seated in the indoor/outdoor area over looking sunset which I loved. I enjoyed being able to watch all the people out and about downtown Asheboro. We were greeted by our waitress after a brief wait and she took our drink orders as well as gave us our menus to look over. We ordered a 1/2 and 1/2 pizza so we did one half pepperoni and cheese the other half was the buffalo chicken specialty pizza. If I'm being honest the wait for the food was a bit long. While we waited I ordered a Whiskey Sour which was kind of disappointing but it was still drinkable. After waiting quite sometime ( honestly this wasn't a problem as I stated we were with friends so we were catching up ) the food finally arrived. The pizza was huge and the crust was thin and the slices were enormous ! It had great flavor both kinds. The only downside was it was a bit more greasy than I would have liked which made it soggy . So in conclusion the restaurant provides a great friendly atmosphere. The wait staff was super friendly and helpful stayed on top of things kept our cups full and complied with all our requests. The food was okay I'll definatley try it again and try something new I seen someone had some pasta salad that looked delicious ( I'll be trying it in my future visit ). Okay now here's the best part for me this restaurant is LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED ! What makes downtown Asheboro so great is the locals and all the locally owned businesses . So lets keep it great by supporting the great local people who make it special. People obviously love this place as we were leaving they were waiting outside for a seat and table to become available the environment here is so inviting I think everyone should try them at least once if passing through Asheboro.

Yelp
Casual down town bar/eatery. Parking on our front street spaces, but more parking is available across the street at the railroad crosswalk. The bar offers seating for singles & there are booths for 2-4 or tables for larger groups. Staff were attentive, accommodating & friendly. Craft or bottle beer, plus soft drinks & wines to drink. Several appetizers, burgers, pizza & chicken, pork & seafood sandwiches. We had the pulled pork nachos & pork barbecue sandwich with thick sliced potato chips. There barbecue sauce & coleslaw are a slightly creamy sweet southern style. Everything was delicious. Rose, our waitress, made our experience & pace of service enjoyable delightful. It was a Monday night & this place was busy. Clearly a popular place. Homemade deserts were available, but we were full & skipped them this time. Reasonable price point. Lots to appreciate here. Yelp
Great pizza. We don't eat pizza nearly as much as we used to, but this place is on our list.

Yelp
I try to base a review on multiple visits so let me break this down... Visit 1. Insanely loud environment (it's a bar, I get it).....cold food Visit 2. Seated within 45 minutes, 20 min wait for sweet tea, 62 minute wait time for food Visit 3. 1 hour 27 min wait time to be seated, 34 minute wait for drinks, 1 hour 45 min for a corn dog, Italian sub, Ruben sandwich. Visit 4. Seated within 40 minutes (new record). Waitress said upfront that the food would be more than an hour for food unless we wanted "cold food" then it would be slightly quicker... I'm done, they've lost my business

Yelp
A great local dive spot to enjoy on a date night or night out. The drinks are amazing, and the bartenders are fun. The staff is personable and great to talk to. I love the murals and local shops around town, and the cool train tracks and train mural across the street. Park across the street, and walk over. Wait times can get long on busy nights. The food is good, the fries are some of my favorites locally, and their ranch is that runny homemade deliciousness. Yum! Their buffalo chicken sandwich was not good- smothered in sauce that just wasn't great and the chicken is so dry- so don't order that. Love their pizzas and appetizers though! The buffalo chicken pizza (without onions for us) is our favorite go to. Super yummy. We come here often and order to go sometimes too. Great place, decent food, cool atmosphere. A busy spot, not quiet.

M G.

Yelp
The food was absolutely gross. We orders a pizza and 2 salads. It took forever to get the food and they weren't busy. The pizza came out with triple cheese. We had to bribe the kids to eat one piece. Our salads had clearly been sitting for a while. The fried chicken was cold and rubbery. The lettuce was brown. It took forever to get the check but by then I could have just been hangry. We left and had to pick up more food because we were still so hungry. Never again! Just gross!

Brian B.

Yelp
The flying pig is a family oriented business. The owners Barbara and Dennis are good people. The food is excellent. However I have to give it 3 stars because Barry and Justin are BUTTHOLES! word to the wise.

Yelp
The service was excellent! The food was also great. We had the nicest stop here on our way home and were so glad we did.

Yelp
My family ate here Saturday night. Started off with the queso dip. It was tasty and a very large serving. For our meal we had a pizza. It was very flavorful and fresh. It was more than we could eat so we carried the rest home. The atmosphere in the Flying Pig is very nice. The decor is mainly sports related. It kind of had a retro old school look to it. They are in the process of adding outdoor dining. The Flying Pig also has a full bar. They have 17 beers on tap. Both domestic and craft. They also have a large can and bottle variety to suit you fancy.
google avatar

Yelp
Pizza was pretty good. Took a long time. Major downfall was the kids hotdog dinner. The fries were cold and old tasting.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
Wasn't quite sure what to expect going here but the lack of restaurants that are open on Sundays that you can eat inside are limited. We were greeted right away, got a table no problem. They are currently serving a limited menu so we just got some bbq nachos. The nachos weren't terrible but weren't something I would go back for. I was really hoping they had more on them than bbq and queso, just personally lacked excitement for me.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've been in here, and things seem to have gone downhill. They weren't that busy and our food took over an hour to get out. Our waitress did keep up with our drinks, but refilled and ran. Not once did she offer any explanation on what was taking so long. The delay would have been OK if the food had come out hot. It did not. The fries didn't even feel like they'd been kept under a heat lamp. They were just flat out cold. Overall this was my worst experience here. I hope they can straighten things out because the food and service are normally great, but this afternoon just wasn't up to par.

Kaitlyn B.

Yelp
Cauliflower pizza was good, but took an hour to get our food, but was a Saturday afternoon.

Terry S.

Yelp
my wife ordered a calzone with jalapeños and looked like they dumped a whole jar on her food, The fries were very hard like a crunchy potato stick, My wife is Latino,I'm sure they were just being ridiculous when they put whole jar of jalapeños in her food, But an we won't be returning to this over rated watering hole,. Very disappointed

Yelp
After multiple visits, nothing has improved. Time and time again at least a 35-45 minute wait for food to hit the table. Servers are typically nice but not the most attentive. The kitchen is where the issue is. Takes way to long to get anything. My particular visit today was the same with entirely too long of a wait for food to hit the table and even drinks. We ordered a pizza that was completely wrong. We ordered a pizza off of the menu and then added two toppings on one side. Came out only two toppings all over the pizza. No meats that were on the pizza we ordered. We let the server know and he said "that's my bad, I must have misunderstood you". We did not have time to wait another 40 minutes for food so we just asked for them to take the pizza off. Server steps away and talks to management we assume. He eventually comes back and says "we are going to adjust it to a two topping pizza" we were unhappy with that because it is not what we ordered. If your server makes a mistake and then your management does not correct it. That is poor customer service and even worse business practices. I want to like this place, I really do. They need to do some big improvements in order to have some happy returning customers.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite local bars when I visit my hometown. The food is pretty good and they usually have good drink specials. It gets packed very quickly and wait times can get a little long. Having a way to check in online would be a good addition, if possible. I've tried almost every type of pizza on their menu and they are definitely the best pizza place in Asheboro. The spinach dip is very good, just wish there was more of it for the price. The angry okra (fried okra) is actually very good, especially considering I don't usually like okra. Anything on their menu that is fried, honestly, is pretty good. I also think the memorabilia is neat that they have, including the representation of local sports teams. Always make it a point to stop in here when I visit because it really is one of my favorite spots.

Kimberly P.

Yelp
Start with the positive - waitress was super nice, appetizers (cheese fries & angry okra) were delicious! Our waitress kept our drinks refilled while we were able to enjoy the outside seating and visit together as a family. Our son ordered the Philly cheesesteak & it was the best main dish ordered by our family of 4. Now for the negative - we waited over an hour for our food after we finished our appetizers, and it wasn't even hot when it arrived. My husband ordered the Reuben sandwich, it had no dressing & the kraut was brown. I ordered fish & chips which were cold upon arrival. Cold fish - gross! And the fish portion size looked like a kids meal. Our daughter ordered the turkey croissant which she ate two bites of & refused to eat the rest. My husband & I didn't eat 1/2 our meals. Overall this place is not worth the price - $75 for cold food that tasted gross & a long wait. IF we ever return, it would be for appetizers only!

Yelp
I visited this place with my son for the first time, and after eating, I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is kinda like a sports bar and pub mix. The music is louder than some may like but the staff is super friendly. Also, the food was good, and portions were above average. They have some great choices for everyone, from pizza to salads or subs. I had the Reuben and it was serve with a choice of side. The sandwich was loaded with roast beef and just the right amount of kraut and dressing. I definitely recommend trying.

Yelp
For starters they sat us outside in their garage. Didnt bother to ask if it was ok. Asked to move inside and they told us they couldnt. It was much quieter outside, but you miss the ambience of the restaurant. Waiter was pretty rude and dismissive. Slow to do anything. Not attentive. Bathroom was disgusting. Food was ok. Nothing too fantastic. Would have probably been better with a different server and the loud cars driving past. That being said, we wont be returning.
google avatar

Sandra T.

Yelp
Great food and great place, locals here are very friendly and very comfortable with the atmosphere. For sure, we will definitely be back. They are following the COVID guidelines..
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Stopped in at 5:30pm with a party of 7. We were sat at 7:25pm (they are not allowed to give you a time frame) and our waitress was INCREDIBLE. Her name was Moira. They have a small menu, very small menu. We ordered a pizza and it wasn't good. We also got their queso and spinach dip. Queso tasted like a Velveeta mix and spinach dip was descent. Overall, we shouldn't of waited. I'd skip this restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
The flying pig has the best pizza you will ever eat! Delicious and we love coming there for pizza!! The slices are huge and usually you can only eat one may be two if you're pushing it ha ha Ha but the staff is great also!
google avatar

Len F.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and the food is delicious. Located in downtown Asheboro! Must try!

Michele W.

Yelp
Stopped on our way home from vacation for our lunch. Great find! The black bean and corn salsa is great, our daughter loved the Mac 'n cheese bites as appetizers while we waited! We also ordered 3 different pizzas, one with the cauliflower crust (Yum!) All three were great! Very generous toppings! The staff was so welcoming, the service was awesome! Our server Mya was attentive, accommodating, and super friendly! Will stop again on our way through!

Yelp
We came by this afternoon had philly cheese we had homemade chips & hubby had fries They made sandwiches the way we wanted French fries were browned perfect I like my chips not so done they were great but I would have liked them to have laid them on paper towel to absorb them I had to do that with my napkins other than that I would have gave them 5 stars food was great Good service

Yelp
We traveled from out of town to go to the NC zoo and we wanted a unique place to have dinner. Upon checking Yelp and speaking with front desk at hotel we chose this place. It's great bar food which I love and the service and friendliness was exceptional. Jalapeños were breaded and fried just right. Spinach dip was delicious. I really loved that the buffalo chicken pizza wasn't overly Buffalo. Also consider myself a Ranch connoisseur and the ranch was top 10 I've ever had. Would definitely visit this cool dive bar.

Ronda M.

Yelp
We had the steak Philly and cheese and the flounder sandwich. Both were delicious and the portions a great value. Highly recommend.

Stewart F.

Yelp
I have always enjoyed the Flying Pig. The food is great and the people are so nice. Recently, however, the time it takes to get food has been ridiculous. My wife and I went in around dinnertime, and were seated right away. They were busy, but not packed like I have seen it before. We each ordered a sandwich with chips. It took over an hour to get our food. We asked for boxes before it came out because we needed to go. The Pig needs to do something about their efficiency.

Yelp
My wife and I were out on a Sunday drive and found ourselves in Asheville looking for a place to eat. We found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a try. It was a trip back to the 1950s. However, the prices were definitely 2022. But nevertheless, it was well worth it. Since we live less than 100 miles away, we hope to come back again. If you're into burgers, shakes and fries... This is the place.

Alex N.

Yelp
I don't write reviews but this was a disaster. I would never go back. 2 drinks had a bug floating at the top. I assume we were given the same drink back which made it even worse. Pizza was very dry and looked as if it was made the day prior and sat under a heat lamp. Fish and chips were the size of a kids plate and served with chips even though menu says fries. Server wasn't bad but the fact the manager never came over to apologize is unacceptable. The only good thing this place did right was the wings. Mistakes happen but clearly this place needs a visit from bar rescue!

Yelp
My family and I stopped by after visiting the North Carolina Zoo on Memorial Day. I'm a pizza snob. I tasted a piece of my son's pizza. It passed the test. Well made. Sandwiches were great. This place feels locally owned. It's a "joint". It is not homogenized franchise BS. The place is a "joint". I love that. Decor is unique too. The food and drinks are very good. Service excellent. Justin in particular made us feel at home taking the time to know who we were and why we stopped in. The staff is vested clearly in the food and the experience. I wish a "joint" like this were closer to where I live. Mad accolades. I returned after a zoo visit in 2018. My review above holds true.
google avatar

Kayla K.

Yelp
Service was great. The staff is super friendly and attentive. Food was okay. Nothing to really rave about but certainly not bad. Great beer selection though. Great price on the food. My only complaint were due to the lack of space to wait for a table.

Rebecca Y.

Yelp
My husband and I actually came to Asheboro for a different restaurant, but they were closed and I'm so glad they were. We stopped at Flying Pig and we left stuffed and happy! I got the make your own pizza with cauliflower crust (keto diet) and everything was fresh and cooked to perfection! My hubby got the Buffalo chicken pizza and he was not disappointed. Awesome atmosphere, friendly staff, and funny bathrooms!

Kim T.

Yelp
Great bat atmosphere! Wings, spinach dip and philly cheese is the way to go. Don't forget to try their angry okra... you will be surprised- its not okra!!!

Kelli G.

Yelp
Really good food. And if you want to tweak it a little bit they are usually very cooperative. Good staff. Local people who do an excellent job as owners. They're hospitable and accommodating and just a good strong family from Asheboro. But the food is delicious. I've never had anything bad. Locals like to eat there as well. But it's a definite go to if you're in Asheboro. So do the zoo and go to the flying pig! You won't be sorry
google avatar

Malia S.

Yelp
I was in Asheboro form out of town. Flying Pig looked like a popular casual hangout. I met a friend for dinner. I asked my sever for a local beer recommendation and went with her favorite and can't remember the name! It was a local non-GMO ale that I really enjoyed. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. It was fine. Good but after the hype of NC BBQ, it didn't stand out at all. The Flying Pig seems like a fun place for locals to hang out. Come for the company and comfort.
