Let me say this first - this is not the best cafe in the world. But this IS the best cafe in Byron Bay, full stop.
I am tired of the stagnant cafe culture in my hometown. The owners are greedy and charge absurd prices (yeah, I understand the argument of expensive rent but still...) and employ wasted, underpaid students or backpackers who tend to be shockingly rude or are just plain assholes.
Cue the entry of 'Folk'.
To my surprise and delight, I used to be a regular at the owner's old job in Melbourne and I can vouch for the man and his dedication to his craft. This is shown in the simple menu and prices. Nothing is over $14 and it is GOOD FOOD. The waitress was lovely, water was provided instantly and it was a baby-friendly environment which was great because I was meeting my sister, her husband and their baby.
I ordered the burrito and I would like to state that Bay Leaf, one of the "better" cafes in Byron, could definitely learn big time from this place. For starters, everything was INSIDE the wrap. The bean mix was subtly spicy and a delight to inhale, the scrambled eggs weren't completely bland nor greasy and over-buttered plus there was just the right amount of avocado to tie the whole thing together. (See picture.)
My sister shared the crumpet with my mother and I had a bite. It was fabulous. (See picture.)
The coffee wasn't quite as strong as I would have liked but I won't fault them for it, it sure did the trick.
Seriously, if you want a cheap, good breakfast in a nice small venue, go here. Forget Byron and the overpriced wanky "Oh we're so cool because we are in Byron so you may as well pay 2x the price and it's cool to be ignored because you can sit there and make us look busy" bullshit. Please, for the love of god, understand this one basic simple fact:
We are paying you for the service too.
A fact that Folk certainly understands and rewards you with. I'm going back. And so will you once you've gone there.
