On the Grid : Absalon

"Absalon opened the doors at Sønder Boulevard, Vesterbro in August 2015. Absalon is an old church rethought as a public meetingplace. As for a game of cards. Imaging your livingroom.... now fill it up with friends, tabletennis, musik, backgammon, movies, banko, food, coffee, chess, yoga, fleamarkets and lectures. This is Absalon" - Birds Flying High

Where to Eat and Drink in Copenhagen

"Housed in a converted former church in Vesterbro, this neighborhood dining room runs daily set meals at 6 p.m., offering affordable, communal feasts (past examples include mushroom bolognese and barbecue chicken with bell pepper salsa) with bread, salad, and a main included for a modest ticket price. Seating often fills up in high season, tickets can be bought online or at the door if available, and the evening frequently continues with rec-center games like bingo or ping pong or an occasional DJ set, fostering a lively community vibe." - Lauren Mowery

A must go in Copenhagen. Absolutely love the concept and just such a Danish experience. We love the community dinners, obviously, such a great way to meet people. And the food is honestly amazing. Everytime. No judgment at all. Just lovely vibes. And I’ve also gone for board game night. Just a wonderful time!

What an amazing experience! Its communal dining so you get to meet people. Everyone is generally very friendly. The food was also really tasty. We had bbq chicken with salsa and roast root vegetables. The “cold bowl” desert (a type of buttermilk) was also nice. It’s often a full house so make sure to reserve in advance.

Apart from the beauty to be together, the beautiful plates, decorations, large magnificent church windows… Best bread I ever had (and I am french !!). People are really nice, the events all day are amazing (even some free after diner). 9€ / 65 dkk to eat 3 different plates as someone that loves tasting everything was a big surprise! Do not hesitate to go !!

Such a great place. An old church converted to a community style kitchen with great food and lots of events. You eat at long community tables and it just felt right. The food is very tasty and very affordable (we paid 60 kr for the lunch). People of all ages come here, but at lunch there were loads of small kids, so probably would recommend trying to work from here. Everyone were so friendly. Will definitely be back here.

Loved our community dinner here! We were 3 people including our 13 year old son and had a beautiful time chatting with some Danes and a women from Greece. The food was EXCELLENT and including bread (so tasty) with chive butter, new potatoes and smoked salad with dressing and a salad with pickled onions and lentils. All delicious and amazing affordable. Please go!

Amazing place to chill, work, read, eat. I went 2 days in a row, tried the food that was vegan and amazing 👏 I could chill and rest as well as work a bit the next day. They organize events and its family and kid friendly, saw lots of families hanging around. There was a very nice vintage market as well.

This is a great community meal! We went with 2 small kids. The room was full on a Tuesday night. You get randomly assigned to sit with others, but it's easy to make new friends here. The food was delicious, and you serve yourself family style. The drinks are extra (other than water), but they were very good too! Will definitely return next time we are in Copenhagen!

Lørdagsfællesspisning Friday community dinner was incredible! You sit at long tables with your friends or strangers, and you serve yourselves from a shared plate. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was inviting. My sister and I made this our first stop after arriving from Canada, and we really enjoyed it! Announcements throughout the evening were in English.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Fabulous food in a quirky and social setting. Highly recommend. Even for introverts.

Yelp
The meal I had at Absalon was the heartiest meal I had in Denmark, as well as the most interesting dining experience. The food was delicious, plentiful, and cheap (50 kroner, or about $8 USD), but the real draw of the dinners here is the deliberately communal seating. Everyone is put at a table with strangers, and food is served family-style. (As American tourists, my partner and I don't speak Danish, so the staff kindly made sure to seat us with other tourists and expats.) We had lovely conversations about art and politics over a meal of homemade roasted chicken stuffed with hummus, as well as salad, potatoes, wine, cake, and pudding. There is a small bar in the back, as well as board games to play. I wish I had discovered Absalon sooner, because the other events all seem lovely: yoga, movies, flea markets, bingo... it's truly a lovely community space.

Yelp
Awesome! Best place for both locals, and for people visting the Real Copenhagen. Open 7:00 AM - midnight (2 AM friday and saturday) Crazy Party in the weekends, breakfeast, lunch and dinner 50kr every Day. ticket sale at 17:00, cozy, local, yoga, dancing, tango, swing dance, ballet, Bingo, Music Bingo international, croquis, bridge, Cinema, backammon, TABLE TENNIS, great people, flea Market, vinyl market, meet people, bottle Wine 100kr (cava, red, White) This place has everything. And changes a lot. Sometimes filled with toddlers other times with +50 year old men playing backgammon or Girls dancing On the tables to beyonce Bingo or funk parties. Have a chat with the hosts/employees or Guests if you are confused or just if you want to say hi. (Sunday dinner (and saturday) is often more chill whereas all other days is more lively/busy) (People Call it "Your extended Living room") From local guy
