"With its stunning architecture and vast private collection of modern art, the Maeght Foundation is no ordinary museum. The entire estate is dedicated to art, with pieces by Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Pierre Tal-Coat, and Pierre Bonnard mixing with more contemporary works by Gérard Fromanger and Marco Del Re in the innovatively designed buildings. Outside, cicada song sets the tone and the scent of pine fills the air in the sweeping space filled with sculptures by Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, and Georges Braque. It’s hard to imagine a more enchanting place to appreciate art, as perfect for connoisseurs as for those just learning about 20th-century artists. The gift shop sells souvenirs as well as valuable lithographs."

Louis Vuitton's Cruise 2019 Show Took Over the French Riviera's Modern Art Haven

"Fashion and architecture lovers alike can now add Fondation Maeght to their bucket list. Last night, Louis Vuitton debuted its new Cruise 2019 collection at the hilltop museum, situated about 15 miles from Nice in the village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence, along the French Riviera. The foundation was created in 1964 by art dealers Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, who imagined and financed the foundation to establish a creative space for modern and contemporary artists to be displayed. Today, the foundation owns one of the largest art collections in Europe, spanning sculptures, paintings, and graphic works of the 20th century by artists like Miró and Marc Chagall, both friends of the Maeghts. The building itself was designed by Spanish architect Josep Lluís Sert, and was created as a reinterpretation of a Mediterranean village."

DEFINITELY worthwhile! My husband and I spent just over 3 hours admiring all the art inside and outside the gallery and then having a simple lunch outside in the restaurant. It was a wonderful way to spend the day. Whether or not you are an art lover, I think you would enjoy this museum. It's beautiful with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the artwork. The outside area is peaceful and has stunning views of the town below too. Food in restaurant was very good. Plenty of parking at the bottom of the hill. Not necessary to speak French to enjoy. Tickets are easily purchased onsite. Nice gift shop too.

This place is a captivating museum of modern art. The building’s innovative design harmoniously blends with its natural surroundings, featuring fluid spaces, a garden filled with Miró’s work, and a stunning rooftop patio with a panoramic view. The entry fee (€18) is quite steep, but it is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. There is also a free carpark right next to the entrance of the museum!

Beautiful, serene and very enjoyable art museum, with huge sculptures in garden and outside. Hilly roads to reach it, no dogs allowed also not in cafe.

This Museum should be on everyone art lover’s must visit list. Míro, Giacometti, Picasso, Man Ray, Cocteau and many others are represented. The shop also has some incredible original signed and numbered lithographs by some of the artists on display in the gallery. I was very tempted!

Well worth the trip from Nice for art lovers (15-minute ride on SNCF train from Nice-Ville, then maybe 20-min ride on bus 655), BUT: 1) The bus takes cash only and only cash!! As of April 2025, fare is 2.20 euro one-way. 2) It is an UPHILL climb from bus stop (conveniently named Fondacion Maeght) to entrance of the estate. Took us 15-20 minutes. 3) The day we visited, people who had bought advance tickets still had to wait in line to redeem them. That might be different in high season. 4) There is a lovely on-site restaurant called Sous Les Pins with tables indoors and outdoors, but if you don’t make an advance reservation you might be out of luck. Entrees are around 25 euros, appetizers and drinks priced accordingly. Think about packing in a lunch and drinks! 5) If you plan to visit the actual medieval walled town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence (Marc Chagall’s stomping grounds after 1966 and where he is buried), take the bus one stop further and walk back down to Fondacion Maeght bus stop when you’re ready.

As owner of a contemporary art gallery visiting the Maeght Foundation highlighted my stay at the Cote d’Azur. An absolute must for art lovers with fantastic collection and exhibitions. Would come back anytime again.

🌿 MoodGuide Review — Fondation Maeght / Joan Miró Exhibition There are places that show art. And there are places where you become part of it. This one belongs to the second kind. Hidden among pine trees in the south of France, Fondation Maeght is not just a museum — it’s a sanctuary of presence. I came here looking for silence. I found emotion sculpted into form, color that vibrates like memory, and works that cost millions — but feel deeply personal. Joan Miró never painted for the eye alone. His lines speak in a language you feel somewhere between ribs and breath. Here, under quiet ceilings and soft Mediterranean light, his pieces don’t just hang — they float. Some of them playful, some meditative, some bold. Like moods. Like us. You walk through the garden — and you smile at a surreal figure. You sit on a bench — and feel like part of the canvas. You see €60 million on the wall — and yet it’s not money you remember. It’s the calm. The texture. The way blue suddenly means “freedom.” This is not just a space for art. This is where your mood becomes the guide. 📍Save this place. Come alone or with someone who doesn’t need to talk too much. And let the silence paint its own story on you.

Yelp
Stunning physical space - smaller collection inside but the Miro Labyrinth outside is divine! Small chapel also on site .. high in the hills outside of Nice . Easy free parking - highly recommend

Yelp
There are so many hidden little gems in this village. All the little studios are worth popping in. Great art, excellent restaurants and interesting people. A must-see experience. Watching the old guys play bocce ball was a highlight.

Yelp
You must visit on your trip. It's small. You can get through the museum rather quickly, if needed. The art is beautiful. I really enjoyed the 1-2 hours we spent here. There's only so much to do in the town, I definitely recommend stopping and seeing the pieces here. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Beautiful modern art museum. Go on a sunny day when you can spend some time in the gardens that surround the building. Even the building is a work of art with each curve serving a function and taking nature and turning it into art with the rainwater flowing from the curved roof to the pools below. There is a small cafe up front where you can get cakes and coffee as well , or just rest your feet after walking all over the spacious grounds. Go early when it opens (10) for as the day goes on- it gets busier with school children who are there to draw and you end up stepping over them to see the artwork.

Yelp
This is one of the best modern art museums in the world. It is best visited when the weather is good. Children love the sculpture garden- I know I always did.

Yelp
Beautiful museum of sculptures and paintings. Went there especially for the exposition of the work of Alberto Giacometti. The museum itself is on a perfect location, with beautiful gardens with sculptures and a fantastic view over the region. The Giacometti exhibition was impressing. It gives an overview of his work, both paintings and sculptures. The other part of the museum was only small and had some examples of contemporain art.

Yelp
One of the best! Its now almost 3 years since I last time visited F.M., but I still remember it as it was yesterday. This exhibition has it all, you get to see a wide variety of artists within different epokes and classes. Sculpture, painting, photo, wood etc., all can be viewed at this excellent place. If you ever should consider bringing your date to a more sophisticated place, I would suggest this one...she/he will most surtanly find something here to relate to. A good way to end a visit to the F.M. is to stop by the shop, this is a very good time to bring back some memories of your journey in the world of art, and what better than a copy of Leger or early Picasso to put on your wall?! If you don't like museums, or don't have the time to visit them all, choose F.M.!
