The French Riviera Is an Art Lover's Dream — Here's How to Plan Your Perfect Trip

"At the Vasarely Foundation we encounter Victor Vasarely’s optical art — a hillside installation of black-and-white prisms that plays tricks on space and perception, set with Cézanne’s Mont Ste.-Victoire visible in the distance." - Rachel Donadio Rachel Donadio Rachel Donadio is a Paris-based writer and former European culture correspondent for The New York Times. Really worth a visit from Aix. Easy to access by bus and a fascinating insight into Op(tical) Art. Also, good views of Mont Ste Victoire and the surrounding countryside. It could do with a decent cafe instead of the Snackerie with a coffee machine and chocolate bar dispenser. Worth it for the art though.

It's unique: a massive, bonkers and striking space. Victor Vasarely built this huge 16-hexagon temple to house his own art and it should be at the top of your list for a visit to Aix. The biographical exhibition and large halls are striking, but just as interesting was the smaller exhibition to Claire Vasarely who made have done all the work..

Very interesting museum if you are interested in this kind of art. Not many explanations in English. Visit lasts around 1 hour, vrry easy to go with the bus .

Stunning location with mind blowing artwork that is so beautiful and ahead of it’s time. Really enjoyed and felt privileged to see that, but unfortunately maintenance of the building inside and outside really left us a bit sad and disappointed. Everything felt outdated and abandoned 20 years ago. Outside is not that bad really but inside… pictures speaks for itself. And on top of that entrance is not cheap at all I think 16 eur regular and 12 for students, which I’m happy to pay but also expect to be cleaned well preserved and not only that but taken care of with love, which here doesn’t feel at all. Anyways I would still recommend for others to visit and hopefully whoever is in charge should start taking his job seriously and fix this foundation like it deserves it.

If you have an appreciation for modern art, this is absolutely worth the stop. We spent about 2 hours inside and that felt like a good amount to see everything. Don’t miss the second floor as there is lots to see up there as well. To get the full effect of the galleries, have a seat in the middle and give your eyes some time to take in the full effect

An excellent meusem. Highly recommend. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Great for kids as well as adults. We walked from the museum to the old town which while it won't make much of an Instagram post was fun in it's own way. We saw some poor reviews of the museum which might give more insight to the reviewer than the place.

If you like Vasarelli's art as I do, then this is a 100% must see. The big works of art in the large hexagonal galleries with lots of natural light are amazing. I agree with others comments that it needs more love and care, but the beauty and genius of his art and design still come through in flying colors!

Yelp
What a GREAT place! Victor Vasarely created optical art, or "op-art" as you might see as well. There is some COOL STUFF in here that he created! The building, the tile sign on the outside, and all of the two-story high art pieces are just phenomenal. I'm going to upload some examples of his work. If you are in Aix-en-Provence, I definitely would recommend stopping here. Some of the pieces are really fun to look at. My only complaint was that the building seems to have fallen into disrepair. The tile sign outside was missing lots of tiles, there were weeds growing everywhere, there was water damage in parts of the buildings.... Vasarely was a great artist, and it is a little heartbreaking to think that this building might not be around in the next decade. Please go and support this artist!
