From Renaissance Masters to ’80s Enfants Terribles, Hamish Bowles Presents His European Art Agenda | Vogue

"I visited the Van Gogh Foundation, unveiled in its present iteration—a contemporary structure built around a 17th-century townhouse. The current exhibition, La Vie Simple: Songs of Alienation (through April 2), explores contemporary artists’ responses to a bucolic life—in many instances threatened by the onslaught of the modern world—that parallel the work of the 19th-century Barbizon school artists and Vincent van Gogh’s own passionate embrace of the lifestyle he discovered here; Juergen Teller pictures the fairly grim rural vistas of his German birthplace, while Yto Barrada’s 2007 photographic series “Iris Tingitana” documents the poignant loss of a landscape where this flower—so beloved by Van Gogh—has traditionally flourished beneath the developer’s cement." - Hamish Bowles

We have been there four times already, year after year, and enjoyed the beautiful art and calm atmosphere. This time it was especially good because we loved Sigmar Polkes varioud art pieces. The staff is very friendly, polite and helpful.

Very nice museum. Great temporary exhibition, Bit sad there are only (ever) 2 paintings by Van Gogh.

Google
Very nice exhibition and seeing 2 original Van Gogh paintings was a definite highlight.

A really lovely museum – the layout of the building, the location, the choice of art – it's all so peaceful. I didn't mind that Van Gogh was more of a marginal figure in it, as it was interesting how they positioned German artist Sigmar Polke in his 'lineage.' Just remember, if you're looking for the full Van Gogh museum experience you should go to Amsterdam instead as this is something different.

Ticket can be bought at the reception desk. 10€ per person and it’s worth to see the master pieces of Van Gogh along with other great artists of different times and genres.

I really liked the architectural style of this one. The exhibit inside is very interesting and deviates from but also takes up van Gogh in some way. I appreciated the distribution and elegance of the exhibition, so I recommend anyone to come here.

Very lucky to have seen Van Gogh s starry night over the river Rhone . Today was the last day to see the painting before it is returned .

I visited during the summer when there was a visiting van Gogh painting which doubled the number they had on display. I liked the rooftop terrace which offers a good view of Arles architecture. They have a reservation system online but I paid at the door and it was only modestly crowded.

Yelp
It's incredible to find oneself in the middle of where VVG did much of his paintings--it really brings the mental images to life. For that reason alone, Fondation Vincent Van Gogh is a striking place. But what is even more striking is to find that, when I went in the winter, the collection had gone on holiday. On my visit, only on VVG piece was left at the foundation. In fact, there was more to view in the gift shop than in the museum. That said, it wasn't a complete bust. The walk from where I had parked through the winding alleys was charming and the foundation itself has beautiful facilities. Nevertheless, probably best to not plan a trip there in the winter.

Yelp
We came here after visiting Espace Van Gogh, which is beyond beautiful, but doesn't provide much in terms of historical information. While this museum only houses five Van Gogh paintings, we thoroughly enjoyed all of its exhibits. The Fondation is a new, modern building (with modern amenities) situated amid the picturesque streets of Arles. There's a nice courtyard and spacious galleries. When we visited, there was an exhibit on a Georgian artist--Niko Pirosmani--and it was fascinating to see the art of near contemporary of Van Gogh's (with a parallel life story) in the same space. There were a few other artists as well, but we liked the Pirosmani stuff best. Bottom line: if you want to see a bunch of Van Gogh paintings, go to Amsterdam. If you're interested in art in general, and want to celebrate its many iterations, then this museum is worth a visit.

Yelp
The name of this place is deceiving. When we came here, we were expecting to see a lot of art made by Vincent Van Gogh. Instead, almost the entire museum was dedicated to featuring other artists' work. They didn't even have very much historic information about Van Gogh or provide much connection to why Arles is so special to his artwork. They featured a lot of Van Gogh stuff at their bookstore but to have so little of his art, it is kind of counterintuitive? I think in total, they only had 5 pieces. The art that they had on demonstration wasn't even similar to the style of Van Gogh. It was super modern/different. Since much of it was in French, I didn't understand the connection. Entry to this museum is also not included in the Arles City Pass so you have to pay additional money to see the stuff here. If you are interested in Van Gogh and his artwork, I recommend that you do the city walk instead. The city walk will show you the significant landmarks and its connections to Van Gogh's work.

Yelp
Fountain of Van Gogh! You're bound to see it or walk past it as you approach the ancient roman theater & amphitheater in Arles! Van Gogh spent quite some time in Arles during his young years...
