It is strange to review fountains, you say? I guess it's not any different than reviewing bridges and highways, so I am game.
Besides, just as Norway is country of waterfalls to me, Paris is city of fountains. There is a treasure of architecture and sounds of rolling water in every niche and every corner, and no matter how many times you visit the city, there is always something new to discover.
I know the history of Fountaine des Innocents, and it is not that spectacular.
What I love about this particular fountain, is its charming simplicity and symmetry. The four archways intersect into the simple chalice in the middle, spilling water over it edges, and down the steps. Those rounded steps with sculptural details and square columns holding the corners create perfect star design, if you think about looking at it in plan view. Bas-reliefs are nothing fancy, classical and simple.
It's just relaxing to look at and listen to.
It also been called Fountain of Nymphs, and I do have weak spot for those creatures.
Close to Les Halles, it's a nice spot to take a break in the middle of hot summer day. And it's beautiful at dusk.
