In the Streets of Paris, Skateboarders Are Catching Big Air

"Fontaine des Innocents was a skating spot where the author once skated. It is remembered for an injury that led to the author's retirement from skateboarding."

Old Cemeteries in Paris

"At first glance, Place Joachim-du-Bellay looks like any other public square within Paris. Its Old World charm and open, airy feel means it’s usually full of people milling about their business. But this lovely market square wasn’t always bustling with life. In fact, its soil was once bursting with the bones of the dead. From the Middle Ages up until the late 18th century, the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery (Cimetière des Innocents) filled this plot of land. Records describing the old graveyard date back to the 12th century. A looming wall once encased the burial site, which was dotted with individual memorials when it first began. But as the years wore on, the cemetery began to look more like a mass grave. It soon became the largest cemetery in Paris. People piled thousands of bones into its pockets of dug-out earth. The ground became so oversaturated with the decaying dead that even the smallest amount of rain would reveal the corpses lying just beneath the thin layers of soil. By the 1780s, the massive stench, vermin infestations, and possibilities of disease became so problematic the city decided to close the cemetery. The bodies previously laid to rest within the Cimetière des Innocents were exhumed. Any lingering flesh was burned and removed, and the disturbed bones were relocated to the now world-famous Paris Catacombs. The catacombs contain sign marking bones that came from the dismantled graveyard. Bodies that were unable to fully decompose and instead turned into globs of fat were collected and transformed into candles and soap. Today, the site of the gruesome burial ground is a hub of cafes, shops, and bistros. The 16th-century Fountain of Innocents, the oldest monumental fountain in Paris, stands as a memorial to the city’s lost cemetery. It was originally near the now-destroyed church that stood by the graveyard, but it was dismantled and re-erected in the center of the square after the cemetery was converted into a market." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

The fountain itself is beautiful — calm, historic, elegant. The issue? There are a few too many "innocents" hanging around, eyeing your pockets like it’s a sport. It’s a cool little spot, but the sketchy surroundings dull the charm a bit. Worth a photo stop, just keep your bag close and your wits closer.

Many years ago during our first visit to paris many years ago, this monumental fountain and area, was in a sad state, however, in recent times, it has been restored to its former glory with water actually cascading down its steps, the area, feels like it has stepped up as well, being very popular with locals and tourists alike.

A nice little fountain that has been restored, it invites one to sit relax and contemplate life's little mysteries. A few nearby benches to sit and eat and relax from the bustling city. This small fountain dates back to 1550 and was designed by Pierre Lescot by request of King Henry IV. Many nearby cafés and restaurants. Downside is the undesirables close by to scam or pickpocket from you.

Nice place with beautiful historical classics fountain forms like a church bell located near the Châtelet–Les Halles Westfield metro station. So many restaurants and cafes near by. But sadly so many homeless people sleeping there, and every corner many dirty garbage bags overflows.

Yelp
It is strange to review fountains, you say? I guess it's not any different than reviewing bridges and highways, so I am game. Besides, just as Norway is country of waterfalls to me, Paris is city of fountains. There is a treasure of architecture and sounds of rolling water in every niche and every corner, and no matter how many times you visit the city, there is always something new to discover. I know the history of Fountaine des Innocents, and it is not that spectacular. What I love about this particular fountain, is its charming simplicity and symmetry. The four archways intersect into the simple chalice in the middle, spilling water over it edges, and down the steps. Those rounded steps with sculptural details and square columns holding the corners create perfect star design, if you think about looking at it in plan view. Bas-reliefs are nothing fancy, classical and simple. It's just relaxing to look at and listen to. It also been called Fountain of Nymphs, and I do have weak spot for those creatures. Close to Les Halles, it's a nice spot to take a break in the middle of hot summer day. And it's beautiful at dusk.

Yelp
''I've only been to Paris once and that was in 2011. We [my wife and I] seen this fountain from a tour bus with other folks? And if I'm not mistaken this is the fountain in the Chevy Chase movie scene European Vacation where the Griswolds remove their shoes for a photo and a thief takes off with their camera? I'm not 100% certain but it certainly looks like the one? If it isn't well excuse me very much? If it is well very awesome! ''Thank you''

Yelp
We would give it a 3 for being a fountain. Not really anything special to go out of your way for unless for some reason this fountain really interests you. Located in a small public space as more of a resting area. We finished our night here after the Centre Pompidou, but after seeing it, feel like we could have given it a pass. If you're running short of time on your Paris itinerary, would skip this one. If you have the time, maybe it would serve as a good spot to meet up or sit for awhile.
