I can't seem to remember if it was Fonte Giusta or Osteria la Piana that we went to. The only way I was even able to narrow it down to these two was through google maps. Please make sure you look at the menu to see if it has the item listed below before eating at either place!
While on our honeymoon, my wife and I found this hidden gem of a restaurant while walking from our hotel into the heart of Siena. We were hungry and it looked like it could be good, so we gave it a try. Whenever we had strayed from our guide in Florence, the results were usually pretty sub-par and overpriced, so we didn't set our expectations high when we chose this restaurant. To our surprise though, the food was out of this world! It was like a scene straight out of a movie. The main character strolls down a tiny side street and stumbles into a little family owned trattoria where the cook is a tiny old woman making the recipes her mother and grandmother taught her. They sit down and are stuffed to the brim with excellent food by the caring and charismatic owners who keep telling them "mangia! mangia!".
Now I'm pretty sure the cooks aren't old grandma's (I didn't see in the kitchen), but whoever is making these dishes definitely has a passionate connection with this food. They grew up on it and they love it. Some may think you can't tell that from just eating, but I'm a firm believer that you can. The dedication to their craft is clear by the taste and texture, and you can only truly dedicate yourself to something you love.
Anyways, enough romanticizing the back story. I can't remember everything we ordered, but if there is one thing I do remember, it's the house-made pasta with meat ragu (I think it was wild boar, but I can're remember). It was one of those first bites you'll always remember. You know, the kind where your eyes open wide, your facial expression turns to pure bliss, and you let out an uncontrollable moan of delight. I had so many wonderful meals on the trip, it's impossible to pick a favorite, but this would most definitely be in the top 3. Considering that we ate 4-5 times a day for 12 days, that's pretty high praise.
So if you find yourself in Siena, you MUST go to this place and give it a try. The food is spectacular, the atmosphere is quaint and cute, the prices are very reasonable (especially compared to Florence), and the people are warm and welcoming. The movie Under The Tuscan Sun may have set an unrealistic standard of what people expect when they come to Tuscany, but this restaurant proves that those magical movie moments don't just exist on a Hollywood set. The magic in this place is real and after 3 trips to Italy, they finally gave me that lifelong memory I traveled 6000 miles searching for.
