Fontodi is a prestigious, family‑run estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, nestled in Panzano’s famed “Conca d’Oro” amphitheatre valley south of the village . Owned by the Manetti family since 1968—whose roots lie in local terracotta craftsmanship—the winery has evolved into a benchmark of quality and sustainability, earning organic certification and practising biodynamic principles on its 130–180 hectare estate, with more than 90 hectares under vine . Fontodi focuses on 100% hand‑harvested Sangiovese, grown in high-altitude, galestro‑rich soils that yield wines with balanced acidity, fine tannins, and a distinct sense of place . The winery’s gravity‑fed cellar enhances gentle vinification, crafting revered labels such as the classic Chianti Classico DOCG, the Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo, and the iconic “Super‑Tuscan” Flaccianello della Pieve . These wines are celebrated for their elegance, depth, and aromatic complexity—notes ranging from violets, tobacco, leather, to dark fruit—earning international acclaim from critics and wine enthusiasts alike .

Great tasting and explanations! I loved it when the instructor was so informed and knowledgeable that we could have a conversation about wine in general. We left with a wonderful Chianti Classico to take home.

A few days ago a friend of mine and I made a reservation for a tour and tasting at Fontodi. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Margherita (one of the Fontodi family) gave us a very informative tour through the cellars and wine making process. With either my wife or friends we have been on many of these tours over the years but the facility was a lovely mixture of modern technology and "the old days". We tried four wines and found the Chianti Classico to be exceptional. This is likely because they age it two years in oak which would allow them to call it a Reserva but they don't. Terrific value. And of course there is the Flaccianello which, while a bit expensive, is one of my desert island wines. Antinori, not too far up the road, has a very beautiful but uber modern facility. For us the charm and old school vibe of Fontodi was vastly better. Thank you Margherita and we hope to see you again one of these days!

Yelp
We enjoyed our tour of Fontodi. We were able to sample 5 of their wines and go on a tour of the grounds. The coolest part was seeing their innovation of storing wine in terracotta pots and seeing their production line. We were able to see their packing and shipping room and them labeling the bottles. If you want to go for a tour, you must make a reservation first.
