16 Brunch Spots You Can Walk Into

"Cheviot Hills is known less for restaurants and more for big houses and an even bigger golf course. But that’s exactly why there aren’t really any crowds at Food. It’s a low-key spot with a huge chalkboard menu, filled with egg and sausage breakfast plates and a great bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. When all you’re really looking for is food and coffee that makes it into your body as soon as humanly possible, this is a good bet - service is fast, and your coffee will never be more than halfway finished before they refill it." - brant cox, brett keating

Food Review - Cheviot Hills - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Food on Pico is a daytime market/restaurant with good breakfast things and extremely friendly service. Sure, you probably can make eggs and bacon or granola yourself, but what they’ll serve you at Food is both better tasting, and comes with a side of a wild story about Brooklyn in the ’70s from the owner. That same owner will also notice when you inhale the incredible breakfast potatoes in under three minutes, and (if you’re lucky) bring you another plate just as fast. For lunch, there’s a big chalkboard of salad and sandwich choices, and a deli case of things you can take home with you." - Brett Keating

If I could give this place a 0 out of 5, I would. There's nothing special about the food and it's overpriced. The staff was not friendly and less accommodating. I was curious to try this place out because I am a healthcare worker that used to work down the street. I was very hungry when I came here during my lunch break. I bought a breakfast burrito that comes with a little side of salsa. The burrito itself was $21.50! I waited outside for my order for about 15 minutes. When I came back and asked for an extra side of salsa, the staff was looking at me strangely like I did something wrong and they wanted to charge me $1.50 for a little side of salsa!! I was incredibly disappointed by the service and overall quality of the food. I must say the food prices does not match quality and taste. I told myself to never come back here and I can make a better breakfast burrito than this place after this experience.

Google
Lovely neighborhood hangout with friendly service and fresh flavorful food. Our little kids were less than on their best behavior but the staff went out above and beyond to help make it an enjoyable lunch for us. It’s a warm and inviting place that we’ll be sure to visit again. Our sandwich and bowl were both well worth the price, great bread, fresh ingredients, and generous portions. The fresh berry lemonade was the cherry on top of a great meal.

Nov 2021: The best pancakes ever! Update Feb 2023: still the best pancakes ever! I was dreaming to have them again and finally I did and it was just as good as I remember! Also had an omelet - delicious! Great coffee, lovely atmosphere, kind servers. I think I have to come here again! Cheap parking is available just behind the restaurant.

My friend Nika took me here for breakfast today and it was so delicious! The staff were super friendly and the service was great. Highly recommend the breakfast sandwich & pancakes! Look forward to coming back.

Cute little cafe on Pico. All the employees were super friendly and the tuna salad sandwich was delicious. They kept the iced tea flowing!

Google
Amazing food, service, and atmosphere! We did eat outside around the corner, servers would come in a timing Ku manner not to soon or too late. We had our toddler, the server brought out magnetic toys for him to play with while we waited. Very nice servers!

Great weekend brunch at FOOD. Kid friendly and the food was excellent (pancakes!!) they even have a book section for kids. Love a family run spot :)

Google
This is by far the best place in the neighborhood to grab breakfast, brunch, or lunch - or takehome dinner -- and it's one of the top places on the west side. Judy is the awesome leader of this team, which has stayed really stable over years of service - as a result the people who work here we've known for years as well. Really cannot urge people enough to eat here - especially at this traumatic time for the restaurant industry in LA. Bring your dog and eat outside or have a business meetup indoors. All around awesome.

Yelp
I first came here during the dark days when I was trying to get pregnant. That was 17 years ago when FOOD just opened. This place and its"s owner Judy became our regular refuge to feed my aching body and depleted spirits. The food was exceptional, fresh and creative. Never disappointed. Especially loved the breakfast specials. We've moved out of the neighborhood around 13 years ago but we keep coming back for of course the food but the people who keep this place going. The same warm faces always ready to greet you. A blessed life is all about human connections. Every neighborhood should have a FOOD. ps my twins are now 15!

Yelp
Obsessed with the options here. The food has high quality ingredients with great seasoning and flavor. I loved the avocado toast topped with it poppy seeds and garnished with thinly sliced radishes. Vegan and vegetarian friendly options also available! The dirty chai latte was AMAZING. And Eddie was so sweet to make our girls brunch all the merrier with our names transformed into latte art. So insta worthy! The service here is impeccable. Our server, Bastien, was so friendly and attentive. He had great recommendations and checked in on us often. We were very well taken care of and will be coming here again and again!

Yelp
Our first time here! Great service, excellent no nonsense real good food and deserts. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
We were told this is a neighborhood spot and boy, do I wish this were in MY neighborhood. This place is a little like Cheers, where the staff seems to know all their regulars names and in turn, everyone knows all the staff's names as well. We felt really welcome here (shoutout to Rosie and Eddie!!) and the service was great, the food came out really fast, and everything was delicious. This place is a fast-moving little restaurant with fresh pastries and an innovative menu. I had a berry lemonade arnold palmer, the breakfast mama pasta special, and a side of breakfast potatoes. I was worried the pasta special would knock me out, but it actually didn't feel that heavy and adding hot sauce to it made it extra yummy! The breakfast potatoes were also well-seasoned and tender. We really liked the pastry that was kind of like an upside down croissant with caramel tasting notes and a deliciously flaky outside. The salmon was also perfect on the avocado toast and it seems like a favorite here, as all the tables around us ordered it as well. We also had a really yummy dessert that was like a soft, moist lemon cake with cream and berries on top. Everything was so good we had to also order additional food to go for later and buy more pastries at the counter. We will absolutely come back again and I can't wait to recommend it to more people!

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite brunch spots in LA. Feels like being at home. All the staff are wonderful, and even know me by name now. The food is always fresh and delicious. I usually try something from their specials of the day, but I've tried most things on the menu by now and haven't had anything I've disliked. The meatball sandwich was the special yesterday, and it's definitely an instant favorite. Judy, if you're reading this, I hope you add it to the permanent menu I have no idea what's with the people who leave bad reviews.

Yelp
Good service, good ambiance. I just feel like an idiot paying $20 + tip for a salad that looks and tastes like it should come out of a clamshell container at the cafeteria of an outdated office building and cost $11.95 (and you STILL feel ripped off when you pay that much!!) No bread on the side, no dressing. Just a rip off. I may have ordered badly, sure! BUT I was recommended that item when I asked for "the most filling salad." Wish I asked for a full refund. Oh well! Time to go somewhere else and spend another minimum $10-15 just to not be hungry!
google avatar

Yelp
What a cute little market and restaurant! It seems like it is family owned. There is outdoor seating on the side of the building and a small seating inside. The restaurant itself is very organized and we ordered salads because a friend told us that is what to order here we quickly received the order I think since the time we ordered it was less than five minutes which was great! All the produce, and the salad were very fresh! The dressing is light, which makes it a very healthy option! Will definitely be back for their sandwiches!

Yelp
Seriously the quinoa bowl that I ordered was amazing. It's so delicious! I highly recommend this if you want something light and yummy! The staff are very attentive and friendly too! Try this place :)

Yelp
Five star for vegans, excellent cilantro tofu sandwich. Four star for everyone else, only because of somewhat limited menu options for breakfast. Huge lunch menu though so YMMV. Five star service, our food was so fast and everyone was nice. There's very reasonably priced parking out back ($2.50 max all day). Coffee was delicious, both the mocha and the decaf soy latte. A little expensive though, but everything is these days. In terms of ambiance, a really cozy supermarket vibe.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great local spot with delicious food and unbeatable hospitality, look no further than FOOD. This place has been a West LA fixture for 15+ years, and it's easy to see why the community loves it so much. The menu is great from big salads to the daily specials. My favorite is their chilaquiles burrito - it's dope! Judy, Eric, and the rest of the staff treat every customer like family and create such a welcoming vibe. You can tell they truly care about the restaurant and the neighborhood.

Yelp
I needed a quick coffee fix and I stopped at this brunch spot. Typically people dine in but I ordered to-go. The service was great! It was super fast and they workers were very nice. I definitely have to come back to dine in!

Yelp
I feel this is my place to enjoy good food, with wonderful people that provide great service. When I have had gatherings at my house, Judy & her wonderful team provides great food. I seem to automatically drive to Food to eat Breakfast, lunch & then pick up dinner!!! This has become my joy to sit and enjoy eating at Food!!

Yelp
A friend introduced me to this place a while ago. They're usually steadily busy yet they always manage to get our to-go order super fast...and...they've always been consistent and accurate!! The food is delicious. I'm a fan of the tuna sandwich with Caesar salad. I also love the lemon bars. They have a ton of great options for all kinds of dietary needs )m( the friend who introduced me is severely celiac and lactose intolerant and we can both FIDM plenty to eat). The food is great quality, great size portions and the people are always incredibly nice. They have a little mart at the back of the store which is convenient if you're looking to grab a freshly squeezed juice and go. It's a small cafe style eatery and the astonish here is always abuzz. Parking can be tricky at busy times but you always eventually find a spot. I see most of the people who frequent the place are neighbors so it has that casual, comforting feel. I'd definitely give it a try, if not a few tries!!

Yelp
I did a Uber eats order pickup. Adriana was an angel, never have I been offered and given a cold water on any of my trips. I appreciate your kindness and wishing you blessings and success!

Yelp
One of the strangest experiences I have ever had at any restaurant. I'll start with the food and then dive into the service. As a neighborhood kid, I have been coming to Food since it opened. The food has always been a bit pricey but quality from what I remembered. Two of my friends ordered omelettes and another got the Roman Holiday. All of the food was tasty, nothing to get overly excited about though for a $20 omelette. Roman Holiday was decent but might as well go to a real Italian sub place for a few dollars cheaper. I ordered the "Albacore Tuna" thinking it was going to be a seared tuna sandwich and not a tuna salad sandwich. As they brought my plate out, I immediately told the waitress that I misunderstood the menu (see picture for reference) and thought the sandwich was a seared tuna and not tuna salad. I asked her if it was okay if I sent it back due to the misunderstanding. She obliged happily and brought me another menu to see if I wanted anything else. Fast forward to the end of our meal, our server comes back with the tuna sandwich and says the kitchen wants us to have the sandwich. I asked are you sure no one in the back wants it because we really did not want this tuna salad sandwich. She says no it's fine it's for us don't worry about it. The bill comes out and the tuna sandwich is still on the bill. I told the lady who dropped it off that I thought they were going to remove this item from the bill. She went back got the manager (I believe he was the manager, blond haired guy with tattoos) and I don't think he could have handled the situation any worse. He said because it was an error on your end and that it was my fault for misunderstanding the menu that we would be charged. I told him what the server told us, he goes and checks with her, comes back and has the nerve to say yeah nobody ever said any of this. It was like he thought we were trying to scam them or something. As a server at a restaurant myself, I have never heard of a situation handled like this over a $16 sandwich. Many times I have had customers "misread or misunderstand" the menu item and we simply remove the item and let them order something new. This manager was very rude about the situation. We would have happily obliged to pay for the sandwich had he just explained it nicely. It felt as if we were getting attacked for a simple misunderstanding. We ended up paying for the sandwich and also leaving it on the table because we really did not want the sandwich! Needless to say, we won't be back here to eat again. Hopefully the owners figure out that this type of service won't keep people coming back especially for mediocre food and a high price point. To end on a positive note, I will say it was a very tasty Arnold Palmer.

Yelp
Baked goods divine! Service awesome and family feel! Ambiance cozy and local fave eatery feel!

Yelp
What a wonderful new find ! Just ate here after hearing about it for years. Unassuming place but wow the food was great. I had the egg scramble. Service was friendly, nice and Ill be back to try more dishes. Looks a great breakfast and lunch place .

Yelp
Not JUST food, this was the perfect food for breakfast for an out of town father daughter start to our day. Delicious bfast sandwich. And dad loved the oatmeal with yummy stuff including bananas that were caramelized.

Yelp
Food definitely has delicious food! They're only open during the day (so no dinners), but overall, a great brunch/lunch spot. All sorts of sandwiches, salads, and soups, as well as some other items. The beef tenderloin sandwich is my go-to, and it's always so tasty! They're almost always packed, so make sure you sign your name on the signup on the hostess's table outside the door. Otherwise, as you look around confused waiting for the hostess, two more parties would have gotten in front of you by signing their names! It's a little unclear and they sort of assume you know to do that, so that was definitely a lesson I learned the first time I went there...

Yelp
This place is so good! Judy gets a little rascally at times and that only adds to the charm. The people here have been here forever and that shows ss He cares about them. Enjoy the home feel and good food!

Maria E.

Yelp
Host was the biggest dick head! We were literally just looking at the menu had our 3 month puppy in a stroller and he just told us we can't come inside....It's LA everyone has a dog and mine was in a stroller! Super Rude, never coming here....! didn't even offer me a to go option or anything
google avatar

Yelp
This is not only one of my favorite lunch and brunch spots, but they have the BEST soups and we buy them togo to have during the week. Favorite soups are the Mushroom (to die for) and Lentil Soup with Chipotle. Last year my wife and bought a home in the Rancho Park area and what we realized is there are some great place we can walk to. This is one of those places and I always feel at home here because Judy the owner always takes time to talk with us. Her staff is so personable and always caring Some other favorites are the Grilled Free Range Chicken sandwich, Slow Roasted Beef Tenderloin sandwich and chilaquiles. When going here always check the specials. If you do this you will never get tired of the menu. The picture I added was the Lentil Chipotle soup that I took to work today.

Yelp
Was around the neighborhood, and had the urge for a sandwich. Roman Holiday Sandwich with greens. Ordered pickup, service helped me out... "food" really hit the spot. Thanks.

Nicole M.

Yelp
Best food in town! Small gem on Pico Blvd. Parking at rear. Everything on the menu and in the counters is fresh, delicious, upscale. Baked goods are wonderful. Their catering is top notch. Five stars always.
google avatar

Thanks G.

Yelp
Standard West LA style breakfast diner. Special breakfast burrito was decent enough, but not worth $23. That $23 doesn't include any sides or anything either, not even a couple leaves with some dressing. The sandwiches also look small for around the same price. Everyone working was very nice, but I won't be back.
google avatar

Anton B.

Yelp
It smells of toilet and urine, it is not possible to eat food in such an atmosphere. The food is not tasty, everything is lean. The waiting time for the order is more than an hour, the waiting time for the table is more than 30 minutes. I don't recommend this disgusting place

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Great experience. I had the ricotta pancakes and loved it!!! I found the owner very chatty and courteous. Recommended!

Yelp
I lived in West Los Angeles for 9 years, and whenever I return to LA, I like to visit my old neighborhood. Occasionally, I become nostalgic and consider moving back. Lunch at FOOD last Friday confirmed to me that I do not belong in that city. The owner has a gruff, hostile vibe; she reminds me of a paranoid shopkeeper suspicious of thieves, or of an exhausted schoolteacher who has had it with her students. And I'm from New York City! I'm used to people who don't smile and hate their jobs. But I also grew up in my family's small business, and I know that you have to have some patience for pleasantries; you must make an effort at personableness. It's no surprise to me that the place has such a blunt and unimaginative name. Speaking of which, the food is mediocre, and it smells like an airplane inside. I'll always like LA, but I'll never get its brand of grouchiness--I think they call it "earthy"-- and I'll never return to FOOD.
google avatar

L C.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood gem. I wish there were more cafes like Food in the area! My favorite item is the Tumeric bowl. Healthy and delicious!!
google avatar

Adrianna-Annie H.

Yelp
Food is delicious, hands down. The vibe is "New York-friendly" serving tasty LA healthy food. Been going here for years on Saturday and Sunday. Weekend specials are avocado toast (highly recommend), tofu scramble with ciabatta (it's amazing) and my kiddos get ricotta pancakes, fruit and turkey sausage. This order never disappoints! Service at food is great - in my opinion. The staff is friendly and has been there for years. The owner, Judy, has swagger, dry wit and a no nonsense way. She's more NY than LA, if that helps. We find her charming. This is our favorite spot.
google avatar

Kristine R.

Yelp
Mediocre food. Way too overpriced. Brick sandwich for $25 (with tax)...... forget.. idk why i even bought it lol

Robert W.

Yelp
Dropped in for a late lunch and had zero expectations. Wow! What a pleasant surprise. Besides a simple name and an understated but elegant and extremely clean eatery, the food was stellar. While my wife chose the Farmer's Market Herb salad with the optional addition of grilled salmon, I had a hankering for brunch and did a build your own omelette, with applewood bacon, Vermont cheddar, spinach and roasted peppers. Also ordered the Tahitian vanilla latte. I'm in my 60's and have travelled the world dining in many excellent restaurants, so was stunned to be eating the finest, fluffiest omelet and best latte of my life. For her entree, my wife's first words were, "the grilled salmon with the salad is perfect!. We then had the pleasure of encountering Judy, (Judith Ornstein) the owner and driving force behind the restaurant, with whom we had a very pleasant conversation. In summary, if you are in the area of Rancho Park, do stop in. You will be happy you did.
google avatar

Brea Z.

Yelp
I've been going to this place for over 10 years. I'm so glad it survived COVID. I always come back here for their grilled cheese with bacon and Cesar salad. Best of each item ever in LA! You can find street parking paid by meter with credit card or there's a parking lot to pay as well by credit card or app. They have outdoor seating as well that they set up on the other side of T-Mobile for dog friendly seating. Would definitely recommend! I'd call before leaving to make sure they're open. Lately they've been closing randomly on the weekends so I go there wondering why they're closed. The Yelp and website aren't up to date but if you call, they'll have a recording if they're closed.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
Recommend trying the special weekend menu instead of the regular menu. The ricotta pancakes had a good flavor but a little too "wet " in the center for my liking. The berries were a little skimpy for the price if you ask me. Loved the Ranchero plate - would get it again. But again, expensive for the amount of food you get. BUt also good quality of food I was surprised my glass of OJ was as expensive as my man's iced latte, but the server explained that it is fresh-squeezed each morning so... that's good. All in all, plan to spend around 40-50 for a modest sized brunch per couple. The place is definitely covid friendly and feels safe, but I had to break into my emergency supply of straws in my car because they don't serve straws with drinks or provide them when asked. I think for COVID, that straws should be offered at all restaurants but it is probably a staying green choice for their company.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a cool little cafe breakfast place in the century city area. This place has some really good food! I went with the build your own omelette and it was a sensational omelette. You can tell all the ingredients are fresh and high quality. The potatoes it comes with are seasoned to perfection only thing wrong with them is that I wish I had more! My girlfriend got the ricotta pancakes and they so light and fluffy! The maple syrup they came with must've been straight from Canada because that was some of the best syrup I ever had. There's only a couple downsides to this place. The pancakes aren't available as a combo and to get a side of bacon is 6 bucks for 3 strips of bacon. It's an extra $1.50 to have two meats on the build your omelette. The last one is very minor but there's no flavors for the lattes. Overall a really great spot with some high quality food but a little pricy.

Nancy K.

Yelp
I often eat at FOOD - usually salads, bowls, breakfast, etc. This time I felt like a hamburger. I'd never had one there before, nor did I ever see anyone eat one there before. I ordered the burger medium rare without cheese. It was huge, perfectly charred and dressed with aioli, juicy tomato, lettuce and grilled onions on a brioche bun. I cut it in half and as I struggled to get my mouth around it, the juices ran down my hands (the sign of a great burger) and I suddenly noticed the incoming patrons to my left and to my right were looking at my burger and when the waitress came, all six of them ordered the burger too!!!!

Yelp
Best place in town! Love the food and the service is super professional Highly recommend!

Brooke G.

Yelp
I was disappointed after trying this place for breakfast. Food was extremely salty and staff was rude and dismissive when I brought this to their attention. I do not recommend this place to any one who's trying to eat healthy and watch their salt intake.

Martha S.

Yelp
Food was great, love the family friendly atmosphere so much. The employees are welcoming. Vilma was a sweetheart and made sure we were good. We've lived in the neighborhood for years and love the owner Judy. She's always full of enjoy. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
From the owner to the employees everyone is rude at this place. I guess they are still in business because there is no other restaurant around that area. Don't go here!
google avatar

Lynsey J.

Yelp
BEWARE!!!! PRICES SUBJECT TO CHANGE. They can charge you anything they like according to the owner when I challenged them on my bill. The menu said $19.50. They charged me $26.50. When I queried it I was told that the prices are subject to change. It says so in small type on the menu. I countered "so you can charge me $60?" The owner said. ". I have never encountered anything like this in any restaurant anywhere in the world. The smug little owner asked me if I heard about a little thing called the pandemic? I was standing there wearing a mask indoors while she wasn't. At that point I stormed out . I have being going to FOOD for years, been there twice this week. The food is delicious but their ETHICS and ATTITUDE are disgusting. They just lost a loyal customer.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Food is good. It's not my favorite spot in the area but it delivers when I do go. I e only had breakfast, and specifically the breakfast sandwiches, which are decent. I wasn't a huge fan of the bread. Outdoor seating is pleasant on a nice day.
google avatar

Lenafish A.

Yelp
Basic diner-style fare with a small shop/deli. Very overpriced for what you get. I saw a couple people describe the vibe of this place as "more New York than LA" and that's definitely right. Brusque service, no-nonsense, kind of rude and rushed. Nothing terrible, but don't expect the service to be a big selling point here. The food is passable. Basic sandwiches, salads, traditional American-style breakfast (eggs, bacon, potatoes). Nothing unique. A few vegetarian options, but don't expect anything particularly "healthy." Most items cost $18-20 or more. If you're looking for a good egg sandwich or breakfast burrito for a decent price, go somewhere else. FYI (and this isn't the restaurant's fault), Yelp has this place listed as having Wi-Fi but it doesn't. If you're looking for a place that feels old-school deli and aren't picky about service, it's fine. Personally, I won't be back.
google avatar

YuLin O.

Yelp
Farm to table fresh and new soup options daily. Highest quality food made with love. Casual yet high end, great for visiting parents and business meetings. Love the specials and appreciate the vegan options. My go to.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
There is no point of ordering online in this place because you have to take the line no matter! The white fair old lady is very non professional I think and rude! This is my 2nd time and never again! There are so many other places near by that deserves business! be aware guys!
google avatar

Yelp
This review is towards CUSTOMER SERVICE. I identify as a black woman but in actuality I'm a biracial-Jewish-black woman. I know, I'm a KKK member's dream victim! I've been to this establishment at least five times and I've always eaten there. EACH AND EVERY time that I've been here, I've NEVER been CHECKED ON by staff. I am very observant, and I know good service. My mother was a waitress. I've observed great customer service in this establishment BUT NONE FOR ME. Each of at least five times, I consistently had to initiate contact with this staff just for the bare essentials. What's the point of going out to eat if servers provide less than adequate service? I tried to tell one of the owners and he was very dismissive which made perfect sense. He could care less and it showed and shows in service or lack thereof. Get it together and have someone call me with an appropriate apology, or not. If you are a person of COLOR, enter at YOUR OWN RISK. I would skip this place all together to keep it a buck. Never again will I spend my money here. Lots of cafes in my neighborhood other than this. They ain't all that! Happy dinning!

Kyle S.

Yelp
I come here about once a week. I love their grilled cheese (but without tomatoes)! The service is also excellent.

M C.

Yelp
I'm also done with this place as well. Place is overrated. Ingredients are good but food is plain and lacks flavor. Grossly overpriced. I've always been on the fence about this place but the convenience of location attracted me. What I hate about this place is the attitude, especially the owner. Can't go in. Can't do this and that. Do this. Do that. This is over numerous trips. Gets to the point you can no longer tolerate it. Your food is not that good that you feel entitled to boss around YOUR customers. You're in the food service business. They're so entitled that they feel that they don't need your business. That's fine. At the end of the day why am I supporting this place if the food is not that good and I don't like the workers/owner? It makes no sense. I don't like giving money to people I don't like. So, as of today I'm done like many others here.

Yelp
Buyer beware. Every single time me or anyone in my family had gone to this restaurant, we've gotten food poisoning over the course of multiple years. This place always looks busy because it's the only restaurant like it on Pico, and the food seems healthy, but the quality control is abismal. It's shocking that they are able to pass health and safety inspections. The owner and manager are also quite unsavory personalities. Save yourself the sickness and abuse, and go somewhere else.
