Format Café

A new year and a new start, a new Format Café, is it to be labeled as so, as the titular would suggest? Positioned within the historical walls of the Design Museum of Denmark, in its centenary year. Overlooking the courtyard the room is idyllic. It would seem the space has had a makeover. Warm lighting, framed prints, crockery and cutlery all fresh out or their bubble wrap. The museum a celebration of Danish culture and art. the menu is a reflection, that doesn’t stray too far away. What I consumed was all very delicious and presentable. However, there was a disorderly scrum around the counter. One had to negotiate the terms of how I was to receive my order. To sit and wait to be called, then retrieve your food. A perfunctory approach. The dishes carry a heft in monetary terms which shortens my quota for nourishment. At these prices one would expect meals to be brought to your table.

The cafeteria inside Designmuseum Danmark was a pleasant surprise. The lemon tart had a delicate crisp meringue shell with a soft, airy center, nicely balanced in sweetness. The coffee was smooth and well brewed. A simple yet refined break while exploring the museum.

I originally planned to stop by this place just for a coffee, but then I saw they also had food on the menu — so I decided to give it a try. They even had a kid’s pasta option, which I actually wanted to try! I asked the staff if they could make it in an adult portion, and they were so kind and said yes without hesitation. No expectations, no disappointments — and honestly, it turned out great. The soup that came with bread was delicious, and the pasta was just as good. Definitely worth a try!

Great place to chill and relax and grab a coffee after the museum. A lot of seating both indoor and outdoor and the design of the cafe is beautiful (makes sense considering its attached to the design museum).

I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the Format Café inside the design museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The café inside the Design Museum offers a selection of pastries. I tried the canelé, which was decent but not outstanding – the inside was nicely soft, but the outside lacked the crispness you’d expect, and it felt a bit too sugary, sticking slightly in the mouth. It’s fine for a quick bite if you’re really hungry while visiting the museum, but probably worth waiting to find something better nearby.

The best cafe I've ever been to in a museum/gallery. Quality of food, service and overall vibe is as good as anywhere else solely dedicated to food and drink. Best smoked salmon ever. My partner had a delicious Chicken Caesar salad. Good drinks selection and nice looking pastries. Staff were friendly and attentive

Nice restaurant/ cafe with indoor and outdoor seating in the Danish Design Museum. I very much enjoyed the slow braised beef with leeks, horseradish and corn. It was an amazing blend of flavours. My only criticism would be that the beef wasn’t tender enough to be considered slow braised. The coffee was great as were the pastries. Loved the assortment of designer chairs as well as the grounds outside with the cool statues.
