Our last dinner in Palma was at Forn de Sant Joan. I largely made the reservation on the strength of various 'Top 10'-type of articles, which can be a bit of a gamble - but in this case, it paid off in spades. Even though our reservation was at 7 PM - right when the restaurant reopens for dinner - it filled up quite quickly, albeit it mostly with other tourists as well (I heard German and Japanese amongst the other languages being spooked)...so perhaps not as late a start as other local restaurants get. The service was quick and to the point, with shared dishes (all of them for us) brought out in a thoughtful manner, and with drinks being brought out in quick fashion as well. I had a couple of cocktails here - a basil-infused vodka cranberry, as well as mojito infused with elderflower - that were very refreshing and on-point. My wife's glass of red was very aromatic and paired well with our food as well.
If you are looking for straight-up traditional tapas here, this might not be the exact place to come. For one, the portions tend to be on the larger side and less of the finger-food bite-sized variety. Additionally, the flavors are a little more interesting, but that works out in a very positive manner. Our first bites were the black angus entrecôte and the octopus, both of which were really good. I enjoyed the very modest red wine reduction that gave the steak a slight hint of sweetness, but the meat itself was juicy and tender, and the thin slices of Parmesan combined with a little bit of rocket made every bite pleasing. The octopus was cooked perfectly, with a good amount of texture but not overly done, with a nice spiced aioli (courtesy of the kimchi infusion) and something resembling slightly thicker mashed potatoes underneath it. Our next plating was the rigatoni pasta dish and the beef cannelloni...while the rigatoni was very good (I enjoyed the caramelized onions imparting a bit of sweetness on the pasta, although it clashed a bit with the truffle), the cannelloni was a revelation. It looks heavy given how drenched it is in melted cheese, but wow - it packs an incredible amount of flavor. The shredded beef inside is very succulent, and it pairs off so well with the truffle-infused melt on the outside. In all, that was probably my favorite dish of my trip here to Palma. Dessert was strawberries filled with creme brûlée - a very unique presentation of a common dessert where you would usually have the opposite (strawberries dotting the brûlée). While the cream was a little sweeter and less caramelized on the top than it would usually be, the ratio of fruit to cream worked very well as a dessert enjoyed bite by bite.
For anyone making a trip to Palma, I would highly recommend making a stop here for a meal. The service is accessible, with most waiters having better knowledge of English relative to other spots we were at. The ambiance is also quite cozy, with 2 levels of seating with low ceilings, wooden slats and mid-level lighting giving it a nice, intimate feel without being crowded at all. Make sure to book a reservation as it does fill up, but it will definitely be worth it!
