This Caribbean Island’s Sunken City Was a Pirate Stronghold

"The only fort in the town to survive the devastating 1692 earthquake, this coastal fortress now operates as a museum and offers tangible links to colonial military history. It contains Nelson’s Quarterdeck, where Horatio Nelson once lived, and is closely associated with the nearby Giddy House, an artillery store built in 1888 that became half-submerged after a 1907 earthquake. Its survival and museum interpretation make it a key stop for visitors interested in the site’s naval, colonial, and seismic history." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Learned a whole lot with just a 45mins to an hour visit. The tour guide was very accommodating and friendly. Leave a tip when your tour is over, they'll appreciate it

This land has history and herstory! It was great to learn about the pirates of the Caribbean and how soldiers back in the day defended our Port Royal border. This tour has many gems for all to hear and the giddy house is something for the books! It's sways you and makes you feel the energy trapped there for an eternity from January of 1907. Ms Janice our tour guide, was lovely! She was born and raised in Port Royal. She has remained there all her life, and it was awesome of her to share this journey with us. As always, I would encourage anyone to show support to their tour guides. And appreciate them taking time to share with you.

Very unique and cool history. Half the place went under and the other half came up. Also, the tilted building is pretty cool. But I was surprised by the cannon that actually moves up and down. You do have to buy tickets around the corner. I wouldn’t tell you to go out of your way for it, but if there’s time it wouldn’t hurt to check it out .

I absolutely adore visiting Port Royal! The rich tapestry of history that unfolds there is something I've eagerly explored in my history books. Each visit feels like stepping back in time, making the stories I've read come alive in the most captivating way.

An amazing walk into an important part of Jamaica's history. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The guide is included in the entry fee. Note that recordings are prohibited during the tour but you can take all the photos you want.

Visited as part of a school trip tour with students and parents. The tour was abbreviated from the 1 I received when u visited in 2018. However, the tour guide was knowledgeable and was able to handle a group of restless children well.
