It’s beyond me how this is a UNESCO site. The only thing that comes to mind is that the Omani paid for it to be enlisted as all the information in there is about the Omani with some random photos of places in the Islamic world. The place is literally falling apart, and not because it’s old but because it’s full of graffiti, engraved names and messages and thrash; large amounts of trash everywhere and some random pieces of collapsed furniture. There’s almost nothing about the fortress but a lot about some Omani family and Zanzibar (?). No mention of the Portuguese. To avoid. The entrance should be free and it looks as if it were free. Also super complicated to buy tickets - you need internet and will pay extra for some fees.

It's beautiful to explore alone. But if you can get a guided tour from a local historian, it will give so much more clarity to the history of the region and of the nation of kenya, I learned so much! Especially when I realized that some of the transatlantic slave trade, was fed from slavers, from this coast and this very fort!

Oozing with historical facts, the place offers insight into the early years of Mombasa. We had a brilliant guide which contributed to a successful, engaging tour which was extremely informative. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, wear a hat and take drinking water. It is hot and humid with little shade.

A UNESCO world heritage site. We parked our car just at the entrance on the road as instructed by the guard there. It takes approx 2 hours to see the place. Many local guides approach to guide you into the fort. One can pay them to get along the fort, nearby old Mombasa street , shopping and Forodhani Restaurant. History involves Portuguese , Britishers that dealt , invaded, traded Kenya's this part.
