We’ve been loyal guests at the Harbor Beach Marriott since 2012. For a long stretch, this was our “no brainer” resort, the place we’d recommend without hesitation. The service was consistently top notch, the staff made you feel genuinely welcomed, and the little details made it feel like a true beachfront Marriott experience.
That’s why it’s so disappointing to say this property is sliding fast, and it’s starting to feel like higher prices with fewer services and lower standards.
Let’s start with the obvious: the property has gotten greedy. Room rates have climbed significantly over the years, and now there are extra charges for things that used to be part of the resort experience, like paying additional fees for pool seating. If prices go up, fine, but the service, cleanliness, and quality have to rise with it, not drop.
This stay was the worst we’ve experienced here, by far. We checked into our room on the 14th floor and were immediately hit with choking cigarette smoke. It wasn’t a “faint smell,” it was the kind of odor that makes your clothes and luggage stink after five minutes. It felt like walking into a 1970’s dive bar, not a Marriott resort. For a property charging premium rates, this is unacceptable.
We called for help and were told room service would be sent up. Nobody ever came. No follow-up, no call back, nothing. That’s not a staffing issue, that’s a standards issue.
Then there’s the room itself, which looked and functioned like it hasn’t been properly maintained in a long time:
• The shower door doesn’t close properly
• The shelving in the shower is missing
• Outlets didn’t work for charging phones (in 2026… come on)
• Past guest food was left under the bed (gross and avoidable)
This isn’t “being picky.” This is basic cleanliness and upkeep, and it’s exactly what you do NOT expect when you’re paying Marriott resort prices.
Now for the shrinkflation: Sea Level used to be something we looked forward to. Not anymore. The food has taken a noticeable dive. The “fruit bowl” is now a tiny cup with wilted fruit, and the chicken tasted like bagged frozen food that was reheated and served without a second thought. That would be disappointing at a roadside diner, never mind at a beachfront resort restaurant that’s supposed to be part of the experience.
And it’s not just the food. The resort vibe has been stripped down too. One example is the removal of the 2:30 pm lemonade and cookies. That small touch used to make guests smile, especially families. It sounds minor, but those are the exact things that made this place feel special and worth the money. Taking them away while charging more is the wrong direction.
Here’s the hard truth: this property is living off its reputation, and the gap between price and experience is getting bigger every year.
Mr. Marriott, we see you here often. We’ve chatted with you at the pool, and you’ve said this is your favorite place. It was ours too. But if this is the direction things are heading, you’re going to lose the long-term repeat guests that built this resort’s reputation in the first place.
We’re keeping the faith because we know what this property USED to be, and it can absolutely be great again. But it needs immediate attention: enforce smoke-free rooms, deep clean and properly maintain the guest rooms, bring back service standards, and stop cutting corners on food quality.
If you’re going to keep raising prices, don’t sacrifice the experience, and for the love of oceanfront vacations, get rid of the smoke smell and black mold
Quick update: Came to their beach and guess what….. up charge to sit near the water!
