5 historic forts and citadels in Asia - SilverKris

"Dating from the Spanish colonial era and once commanded by Miguel López de Legazpi, this small, historic military fort is notable for its weathered yet intricately carved stone walls and an impressive gateway. It now functions as a museum showcasing sculptures, artefacts, paintings and period weaponry that tell Cebuano and Filipino history. The compact site contains 14 cannons and sits within easy walking distance of landmark religious sites such as Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica del Santo Niño." - Silkwinds, the inflight magazine of SilkAir

Great place. Great experience. I really enjoyed my visit. it’s one of those places where history, architecture, and peaceful atmosphere come together perfectly. Built during the early Spanish period, the fort is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines, and you can truly feel the heritage in every stone wall and corridor.

This area is a witness to history. It's not too big so it takes little time to visit. The scenery is quite beautiful if it's not too cloudy. Learning more about the history here is also quite interesting. Everyone should come and visit. There is an entrance fee of 50 pesos if I remember correctly.

If you're a lover of history or simply looking for a peaceful yet captivating place to visit in Cebu City, Fort San Pedro is a must-see. As the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, it holds a powerful presence that echoes the rich Spanish colonial past of the country. Originally built as a military defense structure during the Spanish era, Fort San Pedro once served as a barracks for Spanish soldiers. Today, it stands proudly, retaining much of its original structure—thick coral stone walls, a commanding gate, and bastions that whisper stories of centuries gone by. Wandering through its well-preserved grounds feels like stepping back in time. The small museum inside offers artifacts, documents, and photos that give deeper insight into Cebu's vibrant past. It's not just a tourist spot—it’s a living piece of history. What’s even more fascinating is how the fort has been beautifully adapted for modern use. By night, the fort transforms into an enchanting venue often used for wedding receptions and special events. The blend of old-world charm and romantic lighting makes it an unforgettable setting—elegant, atmospheric, and deeply meaningful. Whether you're a history buff, a photographer, or someone looking for a quiet escape in the city, Fort San Pedro is a place where the past and present come together in a uniquely beautiful way.

Fort San Pedro is one of the more interesting historical sites in Cebu, and my visit turned out to be a pleasant experience overall. The location is easy to reach, and the moment you walk inside, you get a clear sense of the fort’s age and importance. The stone walls, open courtyard and small garden areas all give the place a calm atmosphere, making it a nice break from the busier parts of the city. It’s not a large site, but the layout is simple to follow, and you can see everything at a comfortable pace. The displays around the fort give a basic overview of Cebu’s early history and Spanish influence. Some sections could benefit from more detailed explanations, but the information provided is still enough to give you a good understanding of the place. The views from the top areas are also enjoyable, especially when the weather is clear. The staff are polite and keep the grounds clean, which adds to the experience. The only reason I’m giving four stars instead of five is that the museum area feels a bit limited and could offer more depth. Still, Fort San Pedro is worth visiting if you enjoy history, architecture or simply a quiet, scenic spot in the city.

I love to visit historical sites. That's why whenever I'm in a new place like Cebu, i try to drop by on any places with historical relevance like this one. Good thing this place is still standing. This fort is small compared with Fort Santiago in Manila. But still worth the visit if you're a history buff.

Entrance is 30 pesos as of this writing (Dec 2025). Well preserved, you can even see the original corals on the floor of the fort. Souvenir shops are also available inside. Refreshments are also available.

The Fort San Pedro in Cebu is a remarkable piece of Philippine history and one of the oldest surviving Spanish structures in the country. Built in 1565 under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi, it originally served as a military defense fort during the early years of Spanish colonization. Made from coral stones and hardwood, the fort has a distinctive triangular shape, with two sides facing the sea and one side facing inland to protect the early Spanish settlement from pirates and invaders. Over the centuries, Fort San Pedro has taken on many roles — from a stronghold of the Spanish military to an American barracks, a Japanese prison camp during World War II, and later a school and zoo after the war. Today, it stands as a historical park and museum, preserving artifacts, documents, and relics that tell Cebu’s long colonial and cultural story. Walking through the fort’s stone walls and courtyards feels like stepping back in time. The structure is well preserved, surrounded by gardens and overlooking the port area, offering a peaceful yet nostalgic atmosphere. It’s not just a tourist attraction but a symbol of Cebu’s resilience and rich heritage — a must-visit for anyone who wants to connect with the island’s fascinating past.

Fort San Pedro in Cebu is a laid-back historic spot that’s worth a visit if you’re into old forts and chill walks. It’s not huge, but it’s full of charm, stone walls, leafy courtyards, and a nice peek into the city’s Spanish past. The vibe is relaxed, with lots of corners to explore and spots to just sit and take it all in. It’s right near the waterfront too, so it’s an easy stop while strolling around the area.

Yelp
Historic Site [CEBU CITY Philippines] Unfortunately, Mom and I weren't able to finish this self-guided tour because of all the walking we already did earlier in the day from the other sightseeing locations but we managed to see a few of the sites. At the entrance were photos documenting the history of the fort. I found this interesting and informative. This was also where we paid a minimal admission charge. Entrance fee is 30 pesos (about $0.50 cents). Fort San Pedro is the oldest military structure in the Philippines. It is also the smallest fort (not as big is Intramuros in Manila) yet it is one of the most famous heritage sites in Cebu. It served as an army base in the early 17th century built by a Spanish conqueror some 50 years after Magellan first landed. The large stone walls and massive canons are impressive and can be found inside. The fort is located in the downtown area of Cebu, inside the popular nature park, Plaza Independencia. Wishes we had more time to visit the entire area. Review #3347

Yelp
If your a history buff, make sure to visit Fort San Pedro. It's an interesting view of Cebu history and this triangular fort. Make sure you come here with a guide as it's more informative when you have a guide. Canons still work it's cleaned and if you can find a small canon that fits. The wood walls were replaced cobble stones and other materials. There seems to be ghosts on the top floor over the entrance as it was a prison. This place I heard can even rent for event or weddings. Interesting place. I would recommend a visit if you are in Cebu. [11/100]
