Fort York National Historic Site

Nice Historic Sites with lots of monuments to see!!!! I was surprised that still lots of military houses and its inside are being preserved excellently well!!! Those historic sites all had nice interiors to see, and lots of old relics and weapons to look through!!! Old guns, cannons, relics and old clothings were interesting for me to see!!! My favourite was the 3rd barracks with lots of cannons and guns, swords are placed inside it!!! It was really an interesting experience for me to do… and if I have a chance, I want to go there again and read the informations about the Fort York old army base’s history and its origin all again!!! 😊😊😊

The site gets a Smashing IT! But the tour guide and the people that work at this historical site get a big thumbs down 👎 Historical Site. Now, I have been visiting this site since I was a young child. While studying theatre at York University, we put on a play called School for Scandal. And we performed it at Fort York. I played the role of Mrs. Candour. 🎭 Now, the issue with Fort Yok today is that the caretakers have switched hands and moved from the Fort York Guards to the City of Toronto. If anyone remembers the Fort York Tour Guides, they were exceptional proud of their job and embraced the historical importantance of Fort York in a very unique and in an in-depth manner. That was very moving. 🪖 Also, the Fort York Guards all had military experience, so their perspective was personal. That's what is missing from the City of Toronto tour guides today at Fort York. Today's tour guide appeared to be very agitated by my questions, and there was a tab bit of sarcasm in his tone. He also left out many important facts about the history of Fort York. I also didn't appreciate being rushed out at closing time. I am not sure that it was a good idea to hire this particular staff to manage such a valuable and historical packed place. They really don't treat the visit or the experience with the respect that it deserves.

2024 December 4.5★ A place to visit and learn about the battles of early Toronto in this FREE historical museum. Learn about the early war with the US. Staff nice and helpful. Lots to see and do. Events during Halloween and throughout the year. Expect to spend a 2-4 hours here. Limited Parking outside through Green P.

Great step back in history! Went as a class trip and it was a wonderful experience! Our guide was fabulous and fully informed with her knowledge. Very nice to see original items and buildings.

This Fort York National Historic Site is certainly a unique place to visit while in Toronto..it certainly connects the past with the present..Entry is free and there are free tours available…the war of 1812 and the Battle Of York are key events for Canadians and Americans to reflect upon..my walk through the paths in the Fort and the closeup observation of the canons , walls and buildings was meaningful and I will search for more information about these challenging places, times and events…I hope to find some videos to gain more information and I will look for some historical novels to read to expand my interest…

Really interesting to see Fort York and the visiting centre, whilst very small, is still a worthwhile addition. There was a man in red coat uniform who kindly posed for pictures and the tour guide was insightful too. Can't believe it's all free and in my view it was a better experience than most other fee paying museums in the city.

Fort York is one of Toronto's top historic sites, offering free entry and hourly guided tours. I didn’t join a tour during my visit, as the 30-minute wait didn’t fit into my schedule, but the self-guided experience was still enjoyable.

Great historical place. The entrance is free. There’s a certain time for a group tour. Very interesting and we did learned a lot from this visit.

This was a well respire in the middle of a bustling, modern city. They really should charge for this. I am amazed by how much is delivered for free. The entrance is a multi-media shock and awe experience that immerses one into the feel and chaos of the American invasion in 1813. It is interesting viewing and learning from the perspective of an American raised in a city steeped in the American Revolution. The War of 1812 was taught to us to as this inconvenience hiccup between our Founding Fathers and the Civil War. And yet over here in Toronto, it was a critical moment in the birth of Canada as we know it. We had the benefit of a slow day, so our tour guide onsite took time to provide so much context of what we are seeing. There was opportunity to try on even the replica clothing of the soldiers in the barracks and get a better sense of what it felt like to have been stationed there in the quotidien grind between battles and the like. A weicome encore were the tasty "daily cakes" in the "modern" kitchen of the officers' quarters. All in all, a welcome time.

We came to visit the Fort York National Historic Site in June 2022. Selected museums in Toronto are free and Fort York is one of them. It is interesting and fascinating to learn about the Fort York History and the war of 1812 (Battle for York). The buildings are open to public to walk in and to look at the artifacts. There are many canons outside to view. We do find that it is interesting how spread out the buildings are. You need about 1 hour to spend here if you want to see everything. It is not a huge museum but the museum itself is full of history and the war/Battle for York happened here. One of the things that B and I found interesting was back then the men must have been very short and small. It seems like their uniforms are quite small. But then there are these giant long rifles on display. So small men with big rifles? Another fascinating thing we found was the map of 1812 showed Fort York is by the water. We looked out today there is no water to be seen. Yes Toronto has expanded and the land was filled to allow population growth. Things have changed and the water was pushed. Very interesting and is definitely worth visiting.

I visited this historic site in 2018, after visits the Bentway. I know there is already a post of the Garrison common but there are no post on the actual exhibit Gallery featured inside thats free to access for all patrons. The museum has some featured interactive art, reason why I visited, and I beautiful feature of the British times and the aboriginal story within our region; just an education opportunity. There are lovely artifacts and you can navigate floor to floor, the place is stroller and wheel chair accessible and there are plenty of washroom access and sitting area making this location age accessible. My favourite feature is the War of 1812 and the Battle for York with the memories to see I just feel like I am transported to the text book stories I experience in elementary school history class. If you like movies, there is an Orientation Theatre that places on rotation with submersive audio visual experience. If you havent visited this place, please do, especially when you warm up from the Bentway during the winter. As well with the emergence of pay-for-entertainment during the pandemic, I thought to share a very free experience.
