I Never Liked the Caribbean—but This Island Made Me Fall in Love With It

"I stayed at Fort Young Hotel, which is built on a military fortress dating back to 1699 and has operated as a hotel for about six decades; it’s been transformed into a contemporary, sleek, and comfortable space with an on-site dive shop and art gallery, and its location right across from downtown let me walk to local markets and coffee shops in under five minutes." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. I recently stayed at Fort Young Hotel and had a truly wonderful experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome with their warm smiles and helpful attitudes. Every team member I encountered was friendly, professional, and eager to assist with anything I needed. The cleanliness of the hotel was top-notch. My room was spotless, with fresh linens and a crisp, clean scent that made me feel right at home. Common areas like the lobby, dining room, and hallways were equally well-kept and clearly maintained with care. One of the highlights of my stay was the food. The hotel’s restaurant served a variety of delicious meals that were both flavorful and beautifully presented. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner, everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. I especially enjoyed the local dishes on the menu — a real treat! Overall, Fort Young Hotel exceeded my expectations. It’s a perfect blend of comfort, hospitality, and quality. I would gladly return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant and memorable stay.

Clean, Safe, Centralized and the best dive team on the island. The rooms were spacious. The food was better than most of the restaurants off site, but close to a few nearby options. The views of the water and the island seriously don't get better than at Fort Young. ||The highlight of our trip was definitely the scuba diving and the friendliness of the Dive Team employees. We are a family of 4 including a 14 year old. We enjoyed multiple dives and saw far more during our dives than we ever imagined. Bert our dive instructor ensured our safety while also pointing out sea life and educating us along the way. He also helped us capture some of our favorite underwater photos during our dives. Captain Phillips, Troy and John Michael also left a lasting impression on us and we will miss our time that we got to spend with the entire Water sports / Dive team.||The concierge helped us to book all of our excursions including: Hiking to the Boiling Lake, Whale Watching and Canyoning with Extreme Dominica, all of which I would highly recommend for the adventurous families.||The proximity to the grocery store was perfect. We ended up buying food for breakfasts to speed up our mornings so that we could get onto our excursions. ||We loved coming back to the hotel after a busy day and relaxing by the pool for sunset with the nicest pool bartenders as well.

My husband and I just stayed at Fort Young Hotel and Resort in early August 2025 for a week of diving. First and foremost, the diving was FANTASTIC! The reefs were beautiful and healthy. The amount of sea life was wonderful. They aren't known for their big sea life but there is so much small and macro that you could dive the same spot for days and never get it all. The reef that is just off the resort was amazing. Tons of life there and if the cruise ship isn't there, you can dive the pier. The dive staff was incredible. Funny, energetic and very informative. They know a lot of information and are happy to share it. Nice slow dives so you have a chance to see and take photos of whatever you want. Special shout out to one of the dive masters, Diante, one of the best critter finders ever. Special shout out to Billy Lawrence, one of the staff members of the dive shop. Thank you for saving my last few dives!! The resort was undergoing a few renovations, so the elevators were out of service for a few days but were up and running before we left. You can't improve unless you renovate so just chill. Our room was freshly mopped and cleaned. The staff was always very pleasant. Breakfast was quite good. Bacon wasn't overcooked. Eggs were perfectly cooked. The fruit was fresh and ripe. We had a different choice of drinks each morning. We would absolutely go again.

Great location — just a short walk to the ferry station, markets, and town, which makes it very convenient. The recent renovations are well done and give the property a fresh, inviting feel. The staff is also friendly and welcoming. On the downside, breakfast is $25 for a continental-style selection, which feels a bit steep for what’s offered. We also waited about an hour and a half for food ordered at the bar (tacos and quesadillas), and when it finally arrived it was only average. For this type of food, faster service would be expected. Overall, the location and renovations stand out, but the food pricing and wait times could definitely improve.

We recently spent a week on the gorgeous island of Dominica, and we stayed at the Fort Young Hotel and Spa. We had the food and excursion all-inclusive package. This truly was one of our best vacations, well worth the money. The facility is beautiful and unique since it was a fort!!! Our room was in the Fort Block, which is the modern building. It was well-appointed, clean and comfortable. Housekeeping staff are friendly and attentive. After we made our reservation the concierge, Viviana contacted us and we put together an itinerary for excursions every day. They use Khatt's Tours who provided us with wonderful, knowledgeable guides. There is so much to see and do on Dominica that you could do a two week vacation here!!! The staff at Fort Young are tremendous - from the front desk to the restaurant everyone makes you feel welcome and special. Thanks to all!

My best friend and I stayed there and we loved it so much! The staff at the front desk, breakfast area, and bar were all very welcoming and helpful. Everything at breakfast was amazing, especially the hot bakes and hot cocoa tea! 😍 We’ll definitely be coming back. 🤏🏾

Reall nice property. Stayed in newer "tower" which were very nice, large rooms, comfortable bed. Bar food was great. I also enjoyed the Palisades restaurant (not a lot of choices in outside of the hotel). Staff very friendly. On site dive shop were excellent and so convenient if you are there for diving. Would definitely stay here again.

So this is a great hotel but if you have read the other reviews (as we did) it is about expectations.||We travelled to Dominica from the UK as part of a Caribbean holiday and stayed 6 nights with our 16-year-old daughter and 17-year-old son. We like experiences and activities so never expected this to be a ‘fly-and-flop’ destination. Yes the pool is small and no there isn’t a beach so if that is important for your experience then this is 100% the wrong hotel. Look at Secret Bay, Jungle Bay or the Intercontinental hotels. But if you want a base to go exploring and experiencing the island, this is great. ||The concierge team were brilliant at helping us create bespoke days and we would definitely recommend Titou Gorge and the Trafalgar Falls, Champagne Reef (take a snorkelling guide and we’d recommend Diving Rambo 😆🤿) the hot springs at Ti Kwen Glo Cho (not Bambooze) and heading north for the River Cruise. We had the same driver for each called Martin Lander who was just brilliant. ||For the hotel itself, the lobby bar is lovely and welcoming with a great atmosphere, selling bar snacks and meals as well as drinks and cocktails. There is a great gym and some amenities like table football for the kids. ||Food is good. Breakfast was on a lovely terrace and buffet style. No complaints and the staff were very friendly. Lunch choices were typical for a hotel and the service was relaxed if a bit slow so watch out if you’re booked to do something. ||Our room was in the newer tower with great views, large and clean and interconnected so exactly what we were expecting. We didn’t see any other rooms so can’t comment but our experience was good. ||Lastly, it is in the heart of Roseau so walking distance to restaurants and bars and for experiences like whale watching. Remember though that this is an authentic place and the town is showcasing local culture and cuisine not western shops or value. Again, if you want that luxury this might not be the right destination.
