Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico

Quite a walk uphill to this place from the sea front so you might want to take a taxi! Great views once you're at the top of the castle. Some interesting old prints and historical information in the small museum section. There is a toilet. Entrance is free.

Great views over Funchal, plus an interesting building that's free to enter. Very windy and wet on my visit.

There really isn't anything to see as very little of the fort is open. When we went the cafe was closed and obviously had been so for some time. A great view of Funchal, but that is all.

Beautiful view overlooking Funchal. Note that the walk is very steep! I didn't find the exhibit particularly interesting, but I was mainly walking up for the view since I was already nearby visiting the Santa Clara convent.

If you are walking, either path from the old town up to this fortaleza is a bit tedious through narrow streets with traffic and no sidewalks (at times). You will be rewarded with nice views and a small exhibition around the history of the castle. The cafe inside the fortaleza is currently closed but the one on the north side (you will have to walk around the castle to get there) is open and beautiful.

Worth a visit for the views across funchal alone. 30 minutes is all that is needed and parking and a cafe available .

Worth a quick walk around if you are in the area.
