What a great experience visiting this place. I love history and this is great place to see, listen and get involved in the conversations with the people who work here. We spent the whole day walking around looking at the buildings and what's inside them. It's a great idea to speak with those who work there. They have so much knowledge of the history that took place in and around the Fortress. Watching the demonstration of firing the cannon and a musket was very interesting. Worth seeing both. Also we watched the reenactment of shaming someone who committed a crime. They get the visitors involved and it's a great time watching it unfold. They add a lot of humor to it. The King's bread at the bakery is delicious, if you like bread. The blacksmith was very interesting also. We didn't take a private tour on a golf cart, but we saw people doing it. We were listening to the person giving the tour explaining the history of each stop. I would definitely recommend anyone to take the tour. It appears to be well worth the extra money.

A wonderful experience in Louisbourg. The history here is remarkable. Read a little about this area (and the French and British time here) before you visit it, and it will make your visit to the fortress all the more impactful. Very well done, very informative, and you can’t help but feel the history come alive here. It’s also in a beautiful location. Highly recommended.

It was wonderful to experience this place without the crowds. Many interpretive panels means you can still take in the history even in the off season. Well maintained and plenty of staff around but not intrusive. Loved that washrooms were open too.

This should be on every Canadian’s bucket list, a fascinating piece of history well recreated. Even though it was the end of the season there were numerous “locals” telling you about life in the fort in the 1700s. Every one of them was in character and regaled you with colorful stories. The artifacts were incredible and you could easily spend days poking around the site.

We came here after leaving Halifax early in the morning and arrived around 12:30. There was literally no line to get tickets and we got on the bus and to the Fort by 12:50 where we went straight to find food. They don’t have much capacity on site so we ended up at the little cafe in building 29 where we got soup and tea biscuits (really not much else to choose from). My expectations were pretty low but it was really good. After lunch we walked around and enjoyed the many displays and artefacts. We paid for a guided tour and that was really helpful in understanding what happened when and by whom. I was particularly amazed by the fact that all of the buildings were reconstructions - they looked original and amazingly survived Hurricane Fiona too. We stayed until closing at 5 to see the cannon fired. Definitely enjoyed it and would recommend!

An amazing reconstruction of the fortress with approximately 60% of the buildings finished and opened to the public.  The grounds are clean and well maintained. Your experience is enhanced by staff wearing 18th-century costumes and role-playing for that era, reenacting historical events, and even involving the public.  There are numerous artifacts, demonstrations to see, and material to read. There are also a souvenir shop and eating area. The staff are friendly, most are very knowledgeable of the history, and are eager to chat.  We were surprised, though, to only see one beaver pelt, and when we asked one staff member about beaver pelts, she didn't seem to know what a beaver pelt was. You need at least three hours to view most things, but I recommend planning a day here to give yourself a much better experience of immersion.  We came here on a Friday morning in July and it was quite busy.  Parking is ample, and there is a shuttle service from the visitors center to the fortress.  The admittance fee is reasonable. We had an amazing experience here exploring the fortress and plan to return when the reconstruction is complete.

Very well done recreated fortress from maps and archaeological study. Lots of artifacts to see and costumes interpreters in character. Beautiful setting on the water, and you can see the sideways trees from the 2022 hurricane. The costumed interpreters were friendly and engaging. The fiddler was a great musician! We enjoyed the pageantry of the drummer etc. for the cannon blast at noon. My complaint is that there was no signage anywhere and no paper maps or brochures. We were told to take a photo of the map on the wall but we couldn’t see it later in the sun. The buildings are numbered, but nothing else to guide you. Some buildings had furniture inside, but no explanations. Others had museum exhibits with signs inside about the recreation of the fortress by former coal mine workers. I wish we had been early enough for the 10:30 guided tour, but we just missed it. The parking is offsite and you have to take a shuttle bus. (Google Maps leads you to the wrong entrance, so you will have to backtrack if you miss the road sign.) There were 3 options for lunch, but they were all packed, even though park attendance seemed light. No menus or signage. We ended up grabbing turkey soup and a biscuit at the cafe, because there was no one to ask about getting on a waitlist for the sit-down places.

Aesthetically stunning site well worth visiting for anyone interested in history, craft, and architecture. This was the highlight of our trip to Cape Breton last summer. Devote an entire day to your visit, and make time for a rum tasting!
