"In 1872, William Fortune founded this tiny smokehouse in Whitby, on the Yorkshire coast. The smokehouse is still in its original Henrietta Street location today, run by the fifth generation of the Fortune family. It’s located near the foot of the 199 steps that lead up the cliff to the ruins of St. Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey, and people often stumble across it on the way to the famous landmark.
As you walk along Henrietta Street, you’ll start to notice the amazing combined smell of smoky oak wood shavings and the fish (and bacon) that are being smoked. If the wind is right you can smell it across the estuary of the River Esk. Today the smokehouse makes smoked salmon, smoked haddock, and smoked bacon, and of course smoked herrings to make its famous kippers.
The once-booming herring fishery in Europe’s North Sea has long collapsed due to overfishing, so the herring is sourced from the North Atlantic. (Local fishing boats now concentrate on cod, haddock, and crustaceans.) But the kippers are produced without any artificial coloring and the smoke flavor comes only from the natural oak wood smoke, providing a traditional kipper that is hard to beat.
Walking into this fantastic shop is like walking into the 19th century. It is the last traditional smokehouse still standing in Whitby." - ATLAS_OBSCURA
One of the most fascinating parts of my trip to Whitby was seeing how the locals make their famous smoked kippers. The process is full of tradition and charm.truly an experience not to be missed

I hadn't been here for twenty years so when we came back it was first on my list to visit.
We placed a little order for a next day Saturday collection. We went for kippers obviously, smoked Haddock and their smoked bacon to make a Chowder. Their smoking is incredible!
We had a lovely chat with the staff.
I hope it's here for many many more generations to come!

Love kippers and these are seriously good!! Also bought some divine pate. Was served by a friendly knowledgeable lady. Pity no mail order! Had a look inside the smokehouse as the fish was being racked - a true glimpse of tradition. Will be back for more.

Lovely throwback kipper smoker on a beautiful street in a beautiful place. The smoke house is normally open to have a look inside and the kippers are really tasty. Highly recommended.

Fab little tradional smokehouse, we walked by in the evening and was nice to see the smoke billowing out of the small shed. We returned the next day to pick up some kippers and pate which was recommended in a previous review. They also vac pack the fish for an extra 40p so kept fresh for a few days until eaten. A friendly welcome and service, definitely worth a visit if you like your fish!
