My girlfriend and I visited Fossli Hotel after a beautiful climb along the waterfall trail and stopped in to inquire about accommodations. Unfortunately, we were met with one of the most unprofessional customer service experiences we've encountered in Norway.
As my girlfriend—who is a proud daughter of a Knight of Norway—politely tried to ask about room availability, a man working at the hotel snapped: "I can’t talk right now. I’m very busy, go away." He made no effort to explain or suggest someone else who could help. The tone and dismissiveness felt not only rude but carried an undertone that made her feel like she was being treated as a "dumb American" simply for asking basic questions.
I approached him to clarify if we had somehow come off the wrong way or caused offense. He said no, but repeated: "I’m very busy and can’t answer any questions. Please leave." His complete lack of professionalism was disappointing—especially from someone working in a hotel reception area where the core of the job is helping and welcoming guests.
This staff member was around 6 feet tall, bald, wore glasses, a white short-sleeve dress shirt, and black pants. He was sweeping the floor to the right of the reception desk at the time.
Frankly, someone with such a dismissive and cold attitude should be more concerned about keeping his job than acting like a "Grumpletonian" toward guests. A role in hospitality comes with a responsibility to create a welcoming environment—especially at a place as historic and scenic as Fossli.
We hope hotel management takes this seriously. This is not the kind of treatment any visitor—local or international—should experience.
