I was really excited to find a spot that still serves chocolate-dipped cones and Blizzard-style treats. It's been ages since we've been to a place like Dairy Queen, so we decided to try Foster's Freeze, hoping for something similar. Given how long this place has been around, I figured it must be amazing.
When we pulled up, the crowd was mostly older folks and families, which made sense. The service was fast--almost too fast. The chocolate-dipped cone was ready before I even handed over my card, and the Oreo-style blended treat came out right after.
First impressions? The soft serve ice cream didn't really taste like soft serve ice cream. It had more of a watered-down, creamy texture--not necessarily bad, just not what I was expecting or used to. It was also super sweet, like way more sugary than I remember soft serve ice cream being. The dipped cone was melty, and while the chocolate itself wasn't bad, the combo with that strange ice cream texture made it kind of hard to enjoy. As for the Oreo-style treat, it tasted like they used off-brand cookies--not a huge deal, but it was hard not to notice.
It made me wonder: how has this place stuck around for so long? It seems like they've found a way to maximize profits while pushing out pretty average food. A quick glance at other reviews shows the same pattern--mediocre quality, high prices. Honestly, I'm glad we didn't try anything else.
At the end of the day, this spot clearly has nostalgic value for the community, and I can see why families and longtime locals keep coming back. But if you're looking for high-quality ice cream, spend a few extra bucks and hit up a local ice cream parlor--there are plenty nearby, and they're worth it.
