"Mangrove forests, winding rivers, and sea stacks that rise dramatically from the ocean—the 99-island archipelago of Langkawi is rich with natural wonders, and the Four Seasons property is designed to provide the best vantage for experiencing it. With a mile-long sandy beach adjoining almost 10,000 acres of dense, protected mangroves, and in close proximity to pristine outlying Andaman Sea islands, this resort is the perfect spot for travelers to unwind and deepen their connection with the archipelago, a formally designated UNESCO Global Geopark—all while cosseted in the Four Seasons brand of luxury, of course. As you’re driven around the property—a sprawling expanse covering 48 acres—you’ll pass villas and rooms that are so spread out that you could well choose to hide away for the rest of your time here and experience a near-complete private experience with just hornbills and dusty leaf monkeys for company." - Jessica Sulima
"Crazy Rich Asians (2018) This globetrotting romcom was packed full of high-end hotels, from the legendary Raffles to the Four Seasons in Langkawi, but the real eye-catcher comes in the final reel with a visit to the Marina Bay Sands, the three-towered Vegas-style resort in Singapore. Here the rooftop bar Cé La Vi, complete with sky-high infinity pool, gives the movie the ending it deserves."

"When the Four Seasons opened their tropical resort in Langkawi in 2006 most of their clients had not even heard of the 99-island archipelago off Malaysia; the 91-room property right on the shores of the Andaman Sea is a testament to the luxury group’s ability to open in both well known destinations and to gamble on the barely discovered. Set out like a traditional Malay village, albeit one with far grander accommodations, the design borrows generously from the surrounding Indian, Balinese and Middle Eastern cultures. While palatial beachfront villas come with their own spa rooms and private plunge pools, even the pavilion rooms feel like mini-fiefdoms. Other highlights include the infinity lap pool with its cabanas framed by stone walls (high enough to block out the couples on either side), Moroccan tents set up beachside for private dinners, the excellent, mostly Balinese-trained, staff, and bathrooms you’ll want to transport home. Among the offerings on the menu at the spa are Malay massage, Ayurvedic treatments and private yoga classes. Though its tempting to stay resort-side, take the time for a boat trip through the mangroves of Kilim River and the pristine, uninhabited outlying islands. As you drift along you’ll realize that opening in this idyll was really no gamble at all. When to go: After New Year but before Easter to get the best weather minus the holiday crowds. Room to book: Though any of the 23 villas will do number 18 feels particularly private."
