Frankenmuth Is ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’—and It's the Best Small Town for Families

"Dating back to 1894, Michigan’s oldest operating mill makes many products on site—comforters, pillows, wool sponges—and carries an extensive selection of heritage lace, handmade slippers, and pet gifts; for $5 you can take a tour and make your own wool dryer ball, and I found the demonstrations well worth the visit." - Katy Spratte Joyce Katy Spratte Joyce Katy Spratte Joyce is a food, business, and travel writer based in Omaha, Nebraska. Hello! I just want to say how amazing the Lightweight Wool Duvet from Frankenmuth Woolen Mill is! I bought it 2.5 years ago, and it’s still in great shape. It carried me through the hot Atlanta summers and the freezing Chicago winters—even when I turned off the heat and AC. I was initially worried it would be uncomfortable during Atlanta’s heat, like my other duvets from Target, but this one actually performed really well. It’s the perfect comforter: not too hot in the summer, and cozy and warm in the winter. It was really important for me to get a high-quality comforter made in a place that treats animals humanely. That’s why I was initially drawn to Frankenmuth Woolen Mill, even though I lived in Atlanta at the time. After about 2 years, a big hole appeared in the cotton cover, exposing the wool inside. When my girlfriend visited and saw it, she said she couldn’t sleep well after two weeks of looking at the hole, and asked me to replace it. A week later, she asked if I could sew it into an old wool blanket instead—because it was just so much better in terms of coziness and temperature control. I did, and now we both enjoy this incredible blanket! This duvet was absolutely worth it. It handled 1.5 years in Atlanta heat and over a year in Chicago's record-breaking cold. Highly recommended!

What an excellent wool store! They carry a little bit of everything. The sheets look very comfortable and feel very soft. We heard a lady coming back for more; she said they were her favorite. The prices are what you would expect for authentic wool items. They also have a shop in the back that cleans and blends the wool for processing. They accept cash or credit cards, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

I visited this store last week and noticed they had the best item I liked. I was trying to buy it, but I was busy with my kids and didn’t have the time. I came back a week later and found that the best item had been increased in price from $140 to $200. I was shocked and couldn’t believe they had done this. I even took pictures of the item when it was for $140, with a sticker on it, and then they removed the sticker and put a different sticker for $200. I called the store and asked about this price increase, but they didn’t seem to understand my concern. I’m going to report this incident to everyone I know because it’s insane.

This is a very nice little shop. They have lots of materials, colored wool, buttons, etc. There are cute stuffed animals, comfy bedding, and nice bags and decorations. They have items like unique pin cushions. If you love to sew or are crafty, you will probably like this shop.

I walked in here not knowing what to expect but walked out absolutely amazed and glad i went in! They have such great quality blankets, cloths and little decorative stuff. But what i thought was so cool, was they have an old wool mill display to look at! So cool! 😮

I needle felt and their wool roving is a dream to work with! The wool is high quality and the roving is priced right. The small bags are only a few dollars and the largest bag is about $10/$11. The amount in the bags is generous. It’s definitely worth the drive to check it out and stock up! I’m so glad I found this shop. The staff is extremely friendly, welcoming & informative. Highly recommend!

I initially ordered a queen-size comforter but realized upon delivery that I actually needed a king-size. Matt was incredibly quick, attentive, and understanding, making the exchange process seamless despite the mix-up being on my end. The comforter appears to be very well made, and I’m thrilled to have supported a local business!
