"With origins dating to 1454 when local booksellers organized the first gathering shortly after Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press, this longstanding international literary fair has grown into one of the world’s most important publishing events. Although threatened by censorship during the 1700s amid the Catholic Reformation, it remained a central marketplace for publishers and agents. Since 1950 it has awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade to authors who promote international understanding; in 1980 the LitProm organization was founded there to promote African, Asian and Latin American literature for translation into German; and in 2006 the LitCam campaign against illiteracy was launched to advance education equality and integration. More recently the event has embraced digital and audio formats, unveiling a dedicated Frankfurt Audio area in 2019 to showcase podcasts and smart‑speaker content, and it also features sizable outdoor exhibition space for visitors." - Delle Chan
