11 Haunted Castles for Spine-Tingling Supernatural Encounters This Halloween | Vogue

"Looming over Franklin Boulevard in Cleveland, this 19th-century pile carries a string of dark turns—from the Civil War–era tragedy of the original owners to a later family’s reconstruction as a castle after their daughter’s mysterious death, human bones discovered behind a wall in 1975, and an arson fire in the late ’90s allegedly set because the place was “pure evil.” Now restored, it hides secret chambers behind double brick walls and more than 60 windows across 15-plus rooms, and paranormal researchers describe it as an “energetic amplifier” that can sway a visitor’s mood—so don’t arrive in a bad one. The truly intrepid can book overnight rooms or even a full buyout, with late-night tours offered on select dates." - Nicole Kliest

12 Most Haunted Houses in America

"The imposing Victorian home built by a controversial 19th-century owner is tied to a series of tragic and mysterious family deaths that sparked rumors of foul play and long-simmering local legends. Over the years, ownership changes and sensational claims—including allegations of hidden human remains discovered in the walls—have reinforced its reputation. Though it remains a private residence, the structure is featured on passing ghost tours and in paranormal media exploring the troubling history surrounding the property." - Andrea Romano Andrea Romano Andrea Romano is a writer and editor in New York City. Off-Centered Ale Trail: Cleveland

"Franklin Castle has too many turrets, too-pronounced of an iron gate, and too much history not to be haunted. Or at least that’s what generations of Clevelanders would tell you. The High Victorian home has been a fixture of the city’s west side for over a hundred years. It was built in the 1880s by grocer-turned-banker Hannes Tiedemann. Although his wealth was significant, Tiedemann’s life was marred by tragedy. A distressing number of his immediate family members would die in this house, including his 15-year-old daughter, his mother, and three additional children, who died in infancy. The story goes that the construction of the castle’s elaborate turrets, prominent gargoyles, and increasingly large network of rooms were an attempt to distract his wife from the ceaseless barrage of death. That is, until she too suddenly passed away. After Tiedemann sold the property, it spent several decades as a German cultural center. The tales of haunting picked up in the 1960s, as reports of surging electricity, the sound of babies crying, and a mysterious woman in black gained steam. Human bones were found in a closet in 1975, but the leading theory there is that they were planted by the new owner, who was looking to put the place on the map. (He started offering ghost tours of the property soon after.) As the years have gone by, tales of Franklin Castle have grown more numerous and fantastical, and now include an axe murder, a mass shooting of Nazis in the basement, and the alleged hanging death of Heidemann’s illegitimate daughter. Many stories focus on heinous acts that supposedly took place in tunnels below the house, which seem unlikely as there are, in fact, no tunnels under the house. Franklin Castle has changed owners many times in recent years, including a stint as the home of Michael DeVinko, known better under his stage name Mickey Deans and as the last husband of actress Judy Garland. After a fire, it laid abandoned for several years, before the current owners purchased the place in 2011." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I stayed overnight in Louise’s Dwelling for my birthday. This part of the castle spans the entire third floor. Built in the late 1880s by Hannes Tiedemann the suite features two private chambers, a large Reading Room, two bathrooms, and a Victorian kitchen with views overlooking the Rose Garden and Carriage House. True to Franklin Castle’s reputation as “the most haunted house in Ohio,” I heard the distinct coughing of an elderly man, unintelligible murmurs, doors opening, and footsteps echoing in the hallway despite being the only guests on that floor. Zac, the Event Coordinator, was my sole point of contact for check-in and was exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the entire process. He was communicative, provided house rules and our local food delivery options. He made me feel safe and well taken care of. Overall, Louise’s Dwelling delivers an unforgettable blend of Victorian elegance, genuine paranormal activity, and warm hospitality—highly recommended for anyone seeking a truly unique overnight experience.

Edit: Hosts were very professional and sought to make things right. I appreciate them caring and reaching out to me. It is rare to find that level of professionalism these days. ----------- Beautiful building. But I would like to offer some constructive criticism and help out future guests who intend to stay the night. We stayed two nights and paid over 800 dollars for our weekend. The host was quite friendly but unprepared. Upon arrival, I was advised that the record player was broke/unavailable and he was unaware I paid for the tea time add on. He was gracious enough to go find me some tea. However it was a rather lack luster experience because unbeknownst to me it was just bagged herbal tea. The common areas of the house were off limits/locked because they were "a mess". Therefore we did not get to explore almost any of the house. Our room was gorgeous but there was no practicality. There was no decent place to sit and read a book other than the bed in the dim light. The antique couch/chairs in our sitting room were purely for aesthetics and not really usable. The bathroom was nice and provided all the travel product essentials. Overall I felt like aesthetics were prioritized over basic necessities. That is fine if you're visiting for the day but not over night. I will say the host did give us access to the connecting suite so I had access to a kettle and fridge. But that would not have been possible I am sure if others were staying. I love a good historical experience but I felt the stay was mediocre. It was not a bad experience but not worth what I paid.

Franklin Castle (Hannes Tiedemann House) — My Visit and Experience Reviewed by Karthik Kokku I recently had the chance to visit Franklin Castle in Cleveland, and I must say, it was a fascinating experience. The mansion’s rich history and stunning Victorian architecture immediately caught my attention. Knowing about the tragic past of the Tiedemann family added a haunting layer to the visit, making it much more than just a sightseeing stop. Walking through the rooms, I could almost feel the weight of the stories tied to the place — from the elegant ballrooms to the hidden passageways. The guides shared some chilling tales about the paranormal activity reported over the years, which definitely kept me intrigued throughout the tour. What I appreciated most was how the current owners have preserved the mansion’s character while making it accessible for visitors. The atmosphere was both eerie and captivating, perfect for anyone interested in history, architecture, or even ghost stories. If you’re in Cleveland and looking for something unique to explore, Franklin Castle is worth a visit. It offers a rare blend of beauty, history, and mystery that stayed with me long after I left.

Franklin Castle Stay the Night was amazing for all you horror movie, haunted vibes, all things spooky lovers out there! We had a tour guide Jens (pronounced Yens) who provided the best midnight tour where we learned so much about the historic castle and how it came to be. The room we stayed in was beautiful we had our own quarters like a living area, kitchenette, bathroom with a beautiful claw tub. The architecture of this place is outstanding. Stay here if you dare and write down your haunted experiences in the little notebook guest book provided in your quarters. I want to stay here again! I won't reveal all its' secrets

I have lived in Ohio all my life and worked and dined in Cleveland for many years. The Franklin Castle was always fascinating to me. I always wished I could afford to buy it and renovate it back to its former glory as it originally was. For many years I saw it sit empty and couldn't believe it didn't have a serious buyer. When I found out it had been bought and was being renovated I was ecstatic. I hoped once it was completed the new owner would have tours. As soon as I found out Jens was doing tours, I booked a tour for me and my childhood friend. Both of us have always been fascinated with castles and other historic buildings all over the country. Jens is the perfect owner and tour guide. He was very informative, knowledgeable about the castles history and the history of all the previous owners and area. I honestly believe that it sat vacant until the right person came along and Jens is that person. It takes a lot, not only to take on such a huge project of renovating something of that size and all the many details involved but also understanding and MANAGING the energy of the castle and of those that have previously lived there and passed on. Jens, keep doing what you do and I thank you for giving the castle "life" again. I most definitely recommend everyone to take the tour or even stay the night...if you dare! Thank you for an awesome tour.

Oh my goodness..... what an amazing experience. I booked The Kastle rooms for my sisters'Christmas present. I didn't realize it was actually on one sister's bucket list. We had the whole Castle to ourselves. It is truly gorgeous! The architecture is spectacular! We had a private ghost tour led by Jenn (i may have spelled his name incorrectly) We could have listened to him all night. I believe the tour lasted about two hours. He discussed the architecture, the house's history, some of owners through the years and some paranormal things. We were mesmerized. If you have the opportunity, this is a "must do." We highly recommend!

The tour is amazing! The Franklin Castle is a beautiful space! The tour guide was very friendly, and knowledgeable. The tour guide would have spent even more time but my friends had to drive back to Pittsburgh because of the bad weather. I look forward to staying overnight in the Castle someday and going on more tours. This is my 2nd tour and you learn a little more each time you go.i added pictures but I am not a great photo taker. The castle is much better in person.

We spent the night at Franklin Castle. A place we have all been dying to see. Jens was our host; he’s the most interesting storyteller and knows every bit of the history of the home. We spent the night and Jens was still giving us a tour late into the evening which was terrific fun. If you get the chance, you’ve got to experience this. It’s not a history lesson, it’s a journey. You won’t regret this opportunity. We had outstanding accommodations and a fantastic dinner. Thanks Jens, you are an outstanding host and owner.

Yelp
Fun fact: The castle is haunted! I recently had an unexpected chance to visit Franklin Castle in Ohio City, and it was a very interesting experience. The Victorian mansion is ornate and makes you feel the weight of its history. The ornate stonework, hidden passageways, and eerie ambiance all add to its mysterious charm. It's definitely picture-worthy whether you're walking by or walking in. The event organizers were friendly. I was at the castle for pop art show held by Zack Webb. It was so fun to see the juxtaposition of history/antique and bright pop art. There was no guided tour, just a hang out in the main area of the house, and basement lounge (both very cool). If you're into history, architecture, or the paranormal, Franklin Castle is a must-see. Although I didn't see or feel any ghosts. It's equal parts creepy and captivating. Whether you're a Clevelander or a visitor, go see it!

Yelp
Last night, on Groundhog Day, we toured the Franklin Castle located at 4308 Franklin Boulevard in Cleveland, OH. As a preface to my review of the tour, I want to state that being born on Friday the 13th and having worked in a funeral home, I do not feel fearful of the dead, nor do I believe in superstitions. I do believe in spirits, both good and evil, and probably a mix of both, zooming around us. But I am not one of the people that you'd consider a 'ghost chaser'. I scare easily (just ask my husband and kids!) and am afraid of the dark. But I do love visiting cemeteries and learning about haunted places. All of that being said, I was born and raised on the West side of Cleveland, and have been aware of the Franklin Castle for as long as I can remember. As a kid, we would drive by this 4-story stone mansion often. As a new driver, I recall going with some friends to scope it out. At that time, you could not go inside, but we sat out front in my parent's minivan and watched the windows to see if there was any movement inside; we'd all heard that it was haunted. Haunted by who, we weren't sure. It was the late 1980s, and back then we weren't Googling things yet. Stories were passed by word of mouth mostly, on the news, or in our local paper 'The Cleveland Plain Dealer'. We'd heard about infants and small children who died in the house, bones being found there. Nobody knew for sure who was haunting it, though stories floated around. Alas, we saw no signs of life, or afterlife, on any occasion. Fast forward to the present time, February 2023. Since you can Google things today, I'll leave that to you because there are loads of details to learn about the history of this beautiful, yet ominous-looking place online. As for what we learned in person last night: I don't want to spoil it by sharing too much. I'll simply note that our delightful tour guide Jens (pronounced 'yens') warmly welcomed us through the iron gate around 5:45pm, and we did not conclude the tour until after 8:00pm. For over two hours, he led our group from dark room to even darker room, up and down through all four floors (basement to attic), while talking about the past residents, mixing oxblood paint, hidden panels, walking us onto and off of stone balconies, allowing us to take a photo by the black mirror, sharing details of one raging fire, some underground tunnels, and showing us a glorious ballroom. There were areas we could take photos, and areas where pictures were off-limits. Like I wrote, I don't want to spoil it by sharing too much. If you are curious, definitely go and experience it for yourself. It is well worth the money spent. In addition to the paid tour, they offer overnight stays. I plan to go back again, maybe next year on Groundhog Day to see the progress of the continued restorations and learn more about the paranormal monitoring that has been taking place. There won't ever be any overnight stays for this gal though! I don't have the constitution for that. While I did not see any poltergeists, I do believe the place is haunted. My spine was tingling throughout the entire experience. Thanks to Jens for the warm welcome to his castle. It far exceeded my expectations! PS: I bought tickets at https://thefranklincastle.com/

Yelp
Dark and spooky is what's always good anytime a year but even more so during October as that's when you can just feel the Erie vibes that much more! Coming here it would have been cool to go inside but someone currently lives here so they are the ones enjoying it's mysterious beautiful vibes of which only one could imagine! Next door to the house is a park that you can get some great views of the house as well as a kinda spooky vibe as this park just has that interesting feel to it! Overall this castle was super cool to look at and to just see the vibe that it has was really awesome I do hope to get to venture inside at one point because that would be insanely awesome as I'm always looking for dark and scary places to find spirits that will manifest for you!

Yelp
Beautiful Victorian looking "castle"/mansion, about 3-5 floors. Has a dungeon, gothic, rustic aesthetic. Small front yard however, there's a back house and backyard. Can't go inside due to "private property but if you're in Cleveland for a few days you could definitely stroll by and sit at the park next door to get aide views of mansion.

Yelp
Updated 11/16/23: I have received my refund. I went on part of the tour over a month ago and I must say that I am extremely disappointed. I arrived early (as did everyone) and was not let into the house until 5:55 PM (tour start time was 5:45 PM). We were promptly told to sit down and wait for the host (Jens?) to get ready. He was not ready until 6:15 PM. He proceeded to talk about the architecture and previous homeowners for the next 45 minutes (and told us time and time again he would get back to key details). This was incredible boring and the host kept rambling and was all over the place. At 7:00 PM he asked does everyone want a short, medium or long tour? He asked if anyone had any other plans (tour was supposed to end at 7:00 PM), which I did. I listened to him ramble some more and proceeded to tell him that we had to go because we had made other plans. This was supposed to be an hour or hour and 15 minutes tour and for us not to even see any of the rest of the house is unacceptable. We were visiting from Los Angeles and have been waiting for about 20 years to see the castle and this was all we got. If the tour is supposed to be 3 hours long, then the castle should put that in the tour description. When I returned to L.A., I requested a refund and was informed that I would receive one. I have never received it.

Yelp
We loved our night at the castle. Jens was a terrific host who gave us the most incredible tour. Dinner was great. How did he know we all love German food? The beds are comfortable and the bedrooms and bathrooms are gorgeous. Thanks Jens for making our night perfect.

Yelp
Excellent tour, with a tour guide that clearly has a passion and deep respect for the building and its history. Not enough time allotted within the tour to learn about the full history and our tour group seemed divided on being interested in a long vs short tour, but that was not the tour guide's fault. He was interesting, engaging and left the majority of the group wanting to know more. 10/10, would enjoy a longer tour option for people who really want to learn more.
